Hello all, first off I do apologize if this has been discussed already, but I have reached my wits end with trying to get the LB2 2.09 patch to install on windows 7 x64.

Here's what is going on. I installed the game using iso images that I made from my original cd's, which went off without any problems. I then copied the 2.09e patch to the default directory, C:\janes\Longbow 2 and run it. There are no problems with this step until it trys to run an extracted file called patchit.exe, which from what I am being informed, is not compatible with x64 OS's. So, as I mentioned earlier, I am fed up with it and thought that someone on here may have an idea on what may/may not fix it??

PC Specs:

AMD Athlon II x2 220 processor (2 of them)
windows 7 Professional x64
Nvidia Geforce 6150 SE 256 mb vram ( I know it's old, but it's what I have atm)
4 gig memory
DX 11
page file is set by windows at 5465 mb
I have tried every compatibility mode on the patch file, but still no joy.
Oh and I don't think it matters, but I am using SP1

I think that I covered everything on my specs, if not, please let me know.

Lager,

Long Long ago in a SimHQ far far away, Flyboy created a Longbow 2 Win7 "installer". Basically this was a complete Longbow 2 install, patched to the latest version with the CA.ini tweaks pre-made.

Go to the Forum Sticky and you will find a still working Download Link.

I recently did this on my Win7 x64 machine and it worked perfectly.

While my above solution is the best, here is a site detailing a process to make 16 bit installers work. Not sure if the LB2 Patch utility is using INSTALLSHIELD or not....but worth saving the link for the future

And here is another thing: I noticed in one of my LB2 installs on WinXP, I had folders marked 207 and 209. I believe these are holding the files from the extracted PATCHES... I am not sure if this is the case, or it is a backup of the files PRE-PATCH...

Anyway, you can try replacing the files with these (AFTER BACKUP) and seeing if you now present as 2.09...

Thank you Recluse, for your suggestion, it was greatly appreciated. I was aware that flyboy had a copy of LB2 uploaded and I have been able to use it, successfully, I was just hoping that I could figure out why I could not get the 2.09 patch to install on my OS.

It's good to hear that my fix for LB2 was successful for you, Lager!

Hi Flyboy,

I also need to thank you for your work on LB2. I was able to play it again, but unfortunately on Windows 10 I constantly get crashes which make the game barely playable.

Tested on:

- Desktop PC, i7 8700K 32 GB RAM, RTX 2070 super, Windows 10 build 1909
- Surface Book 2, i7 8650U,16 GB RAM, GTX 1060, Windows 10 build 1909
- Surface 3, Intel Atom Z8700, 2 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics, Windows 10 build 1809
- Using DgVoodoo 1.5 and 1.52 beta
- Tryed also nGlide, much smoother even in full HD or more, but game is way less stable

On the first two machines the game is barely playable due to the super slow control response that makes the helicopter turning extremely slow. Controls response is probably based on CPU speed/clycles, so the faster the CPU the slower response is.
For this reason on the Surface 3, which is probably even slower than a Pentium 3, game works well, but I always experience crashes (sounds often freezes and goes in loop) after 10-15 minutes. I noticed that it's more stable setting a lower resolution and running it with compatibility set to Win98, but in this case it sometimes crashes when mission is over. Setting compatibility to XP i never got crashes on mission exit, but it freezes very often while playing.

I am not able to use your SDB fix on none of my computers, it's probably fine on Vista/Win7, but it does not work at all on Windows 10, especially on latest builds.

Thanks in advance if you have some other tips, I am quite sure these are nowadays common issues to anyone running the game on Windows 10. Unfortunately i cannot revert or dual boot windows XP or 7 at the moment.

Hi Skynet,

Thanks, it seems so long ago now. I haven't done much with the game for years. I saw your other post where you mention a Glide wrapper that has fixed your crashes, so I won't go over that here.

I haven't really done much testing on Windows 10 as I only used it for about 2 months before switching back to Windows 7 before official support ran out. LOL

Many of the issues that Windows 10 users face with the game are no different to some who use Windows 7. I even tried LB2 on a Windows XP system recently and that wouldn't even launch the game!

Anyway I'm glad that your game is stable now. People still keep managing to find ways of keeping the sim running.
