Any thoughts?

Did everyone quit playing? Forum is dead.

I haven't fired up Elite since it dropped, and reports are mixed. Some good new features, especially for newcomers, but also some issues, particularly performance related.

I'll give it a go soon and see what's up.

I gave it a whirl last night, but had to stop after not too long because there was too many instances of stuttering/low FPS. I'll give it some time until it gets patched up.
The interface changes were cool. The main menu has the "in-game" theme (orange, sorry DB!). In VR, instead of landing in a hangar with an Eagle and an SRV, you land in a
hangar next to your current ship (with skin), so that's a cool touch. I didn't mess with the new modules, as I was in my 'vette and later my Python, neither of which had those. I knew
the 'vette wouldn't, but I thought the modules would be added to small and medium ships. Maybe I remember it wrong and it's just small.

I've also been preoccupied with a new toy - the F-18 in DCS. I picked it up over the weekend and tried it out....pretty cool esp in VR. And now I'm getting sucked back into the A-10 as well.

So I've been getting more into flying on Earth you might say. I've also started using the TARGET script editor to program my Cougar vs Foxy. The main reason was the F-18 module. I had to come up with a new profile for it
so I figured I'd take the plunge and see what all the fuss is about. It wasn't too difficult, and I can see it being a worthy successor to Foxy (if not a little more powerful in some ways).
I've also started to convert my Foxy A-10 & Ka-50 profiles over to TARGET. No real reason other than just to do it.

VR gets a cool menu screen? I've been looking at the same one for years! Almost enough to make me go VR. Almost.

Folks are reporting performance issues (half the frames from before the update) and log-in issues among others. Do you have Elite on Steam JC?

Go VR - you know you want to! And your new system will probably handle it nicely. But wait until the Rift S comes out, that's my advice.

I do not have Elite on Steam, I use the FD launcher. I would agree that there are frame rate issues, I've seen suggestions to turn down the FX setting; I've zeroed it out and I'm still getting them.
I had stuttering in combat at a compromised nav beacon as well as in an asteroid belt when I decided to do some mining. And stations are worse. There was always a noticeable hit to framerates in stations, but now it's much worse. After that I gave up for the night.

What update? I assume it's for the early backers as nothing has come through here yet.

Thanks JC, that seems about normal at the moment with the performance issues many are reporting.

Yeah,I'm on Steam. Must have been doing something else and didn't notice it.

Have they put the old exploration mechanics back in?

It's back in...back in the past! biggrin

I like the new explo mechanics personally. It's both faster and more detailed, more to do. Shooting probes is fun.

I know you don't feel the same and I can respect that.

My STEAM update was queued for 5 pm on Release Day, but I got it to download sooner and messed around a little. Didn't get to do much other than see the new menus and UI. When I was poking around in OPTIONS, I saw that I had Graphics on HIGH and FOV low middle. I cranked up graphics to ULTRA and increased FOV. Still seemed to run OK, but I didn't do anything but launch from Shinrarta and dock at another station in a close system. Unfortunately the outpost didn't have OUTFITTING so I couldn't check out my extra slot or look for the new supercruise and docking computer modules. I doubt I will use them, but just wanted to see what they looked like in the menus.

Long system spec sig follows:

PowerSpec G436
Lian Li ATX 205
MSI Z490 Plus Motherboard
Intel Core i7 10700K 3.8 GHz
32 GB RAM DDR4 1600
Nvidia RTX3070

Windows 10 Professional 64 Bit

Flight Gear:

Cougar Hotas S/N 26453
Thrustmaster RCS Rudder Pedals

I just gave it a go.

Logged in and what do you know? A new menu screen. Funny since we were just talking about that. Now it's a shot of your current ship in the hangar.

Had a look to see if my custom binds were gone and they were not. Clicked continue and was taken straight to Open. I suspected as much and knew to check. But for a new player this could be eye opening.

Exited the game and this time clicking continue took me to a screen with all five modes of play to choose from.

Seemed to run OK, maybe a little slower, but I didn't check settings (maybe they were lowered), and I have no FPS meter running so I don't know. None of the stutters and pauses that some are reporting. Lots of little changes, especially UI. I flew the Courier back from Leesti, stopping for a bit of bounty hunting in Arque along the way. Most of the changes from this update are geared for new players. The two new slots can be very useful, but not on the Courier which can't add much at the moment smile They are there anyway.

I'm just thankful it still works OK, and I'll be trying a new HUD scheme as a result of it resetting again. So there's that.

I hear about performance drop probably related to the FX graphic setting, which requires a zero setting to ameliorate. Another hotfix patch is due next week, so I'll probably wait until next week to get back to it.

No biggie, as I'm also currently enjoying Project Cars 2 with VR + a FFB wheel. And there's always Arma 3 beckoning to me too smile

What the hell was that? I didn't listen to what they were saying. Was the gimmick here the guy playing is blind and wanted to see if he could leave the station using her instruction?

If that dude is not blind he should stop playing video games.

When someone posts they are having trouble, or the game is broken, just remember it might be this guy.

"Elite is broken! The game won't even let me leave the station!"
