Seems an japanese F-35 went missing earlier today after take-off  https://english.kyodonews.net/news/...ppears-from-radar-over-pacific-govt.htmlA Japanese F-35A fighter jet with one pilot aboard disappeared Tuesday from radar over the Pacific during a training exercise after taking off from Misawa Air Base in northeastern Japan, the Air Self-Defense Force said. LEts hope the pilot is found safe and sound.

Yeah hopefully the pilot was able to eject in time. I’m sure all of us will also be curious to eventually find out what caused the crash. Obviously a newbie pilot with few hours on the model. *drips with sarcasm*

Wreckage of missing Japan's F-35 fighter jet found, pilot remains missingThe wreckage of the Japanese F-35 stealth fighter jet that disappeared from radar over the Pacific Ocean during a night training flight was found in the sea on Wednesday.
The Japanese defense ministry said the male pilot, who’s in his 40s, remains missing.
The fighter jet went off the radar while flying off the eastern coast of Aomori, just about half an hour after taking off the Misawa air base with three other F-35As.
It remains unclear what caused the crash, Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya told reporters, adding that 12 other F-35s at the base will be grounded.
“We have collected parts from the jet fighter's tail fin so we [believe] it crashed,” Iwaya said, according to the BBC.

Shortly after the signal, all communications with the fighter jet were lost." so you've got a jet thats still having teething problems obviously having a serious enough problem the pilot aborted the mission, then look at where it was some 135 kilometers east of the base when radar contact (out into the pacific ocean) so, chances are the plane suffered a malfunction of some kind, pilot tried to get back, couldn't, was forced to ditch (or eject) and either didn't survive the ditch, or has been swept out into the pacific

YEah I was wondering also about the possibility of a Viktor Belenko, but I guess since they found some wreckage, I guess not. Hopefully the pilot is OK.
The article said the plane went off the radar...how was it on the radar to begin with? Isn't it stealth? Just a naive question...

Luneburg lens. F-22s and F-35's typically use them in exercises where they don't need to be stealthy, or for transiting. The transponder thing is also fair, but luneburg lens will give you a primary (ie non-cooperative) return.
