#%&*$# that sounds like my early flight in WOFF except theres no attacking ships. Just up down then Up down into trees Dead.
It was actually my first campaign mission with action, I got separated from my flight, was running wep too long I guess, engine wouldn't put out more than almost idle manifold pressure, dove into the ocean. My other campaign was just a bunch of boring patrol flights, that was JG52, this campaign was a lot more exciting it seemed, going to try my next one during the airfield raids and I am sure that will be a good one.
The day of Days. I got two of the buggers. Sqn scramble to intercept Hostile One Four heading towards London via Manston. Soon it was buster 60+ then 2 Sqns of Hurries hit em. as we approached the area. Flight Leader called 2 flights Ju 88's ? Port, Low. Red section took on the snappers Higher up Yellow and Green hit the bombers. A field day. We knocked down 5 Bombers confirmed + damage to others and maybe a 109. The Bill was 2 Hurricanes destroyed + 4 damaged Including mine ( 5 hole thru wings ). I fired at thee e/a's getting hits on one ( he was seen to crash ) then an e/a passed in front so carving the turn it was Hammer Time. Smoke puked out of an engine then both of the Fans stopped nosing over and down after a short time chutes came out.
After doing a standard Patrol I was off from Ops so went over to the town to see about renting a Lorrie from the attendant at Nigel's Tire and Garage. and drive to one of the crash sites for a souvenir. Blasted wreck was almost picked clean
Scrambled Late for a party of 60+ heading for London. By the time 213 Sqn's 9 a/c reached the area the fight was over. Pine tree Control said to RTB. Barely pancaked when the rains closed in about us.
Scrambled for Snoopers along the Coast thru London East End. Engaged 9-12 ? Me 110s with our 5 a/c Flight. A real punch out. We lost Freddy when a 110 blew him up, we knocked down two for sure near Esher. One may have been mine. I was nailing one when 3 of my 8 guns jammed up. The e/a went vertical then end over end into the clouds. My attentions were diverted as another 110 put holes in my Hurri so split E ssed out of there. I couldnt get back to Tangmere due to clouds down to the deck so landed at Red Hill for A/c juice and Tea.
First flight, fantastic mission, squadron took off to intercept the jerry in our shiny Mk1a spits, downed two he111's, suffered minor damage to landing gear and was able to land back at base with the gear down 98% of the way. What a smashing success!
Second flight, routine patrol over our convoys by Dover, ran into some 109's sadly, Flew straight into the back of a 109 chasing my squadron leader, plane blew into pieces, was too injured to bail out and died in the crash as the spit plummeted from 14k feet.
RIP
These RAF pilots don't last long!
The spits an absolute joy to fly. Loving it, figured out the auto pilot and increase speed buttons so patrol missions are fine now, just wish I could make it past the first day of my enlistment!
Great reports lads,it's brilliant to see some new faces here. Work has kept me from flying much but I should have some free time this week to take the Spit for a real spin. Hailing from Stoke on Trent the birthplace of R.J Mitchell I have a great love of the Spit. I'm hoping to get a report and pics soon guys.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
Second day on the job. Yesterday our patrol was uneventful, but it gave me a good chance to get a feel for the tension of waiting...waiting for combat. Today the waiting stopped. We weren't expecting trouble, but after circling around down by the Ilse of Sheppy, Leader called out Bandits, 12 O'Clock! It was several 110s, already scattered from dropping their bombs on the ships below. To my horror, I saw cargo vessels go up in flames and huge spouts of water as they were hit! Trying to remember my training, I grit my teeth together and jumped into the fray! As I ... oh, I am not the typist that 33lima is, I will let the video do the rest of the talking...
The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...
Standard Patrol Over the Thames. Our sgn was vectored to Hostile 55 a 30 + Raid. The Sgn Leader leads us to a spot in between 2 flights of bombers below and Yellow nosed Snappers above. Soon Yellow and green sections were in the cross fire. I couldnt hit a sausage that day ,but banked at any 109 that passed me by. My mates , got 2 confirmed Yellow Nosed Boys + 2 bombers ? Total 4. Losses 5 damaged with 1 pilot wnd.
