Quite a few people in the world are IDIOTS. There's not much more you can say than that.
I went to the Grand Canyon in January of 2016 and I saw one lady from my tour group stand near the edge of the canyon and she started jumping up and down while her friend took a photo of her doing the stupid antics.
As for me? I NEVER got closer than 10 feet to the edge of the rim and I still had a great time and enjoyed the view.
Thank you very much.

Panzer... "As for me? I NEVER got closer than 10 feet to the edge of the rim and I still had a great time and enjoyed the view." exactly ! What’s the secret shot I have to get in Grand Canyon National Park?
There’s a little ledge near the trailhead of the South Kaibab Trail that isn’t exactly secret – but it is off the path and offers a view that almost makes it appear as though you’re floating over the canyon below. It’s easy to access and worth the shot. Venture out as far as your courage will take you and check out the view; there are about a million amazing photo opportunities in the park, but this was the one that had me gasping aloud when I saw it for the first time.
Pro Tip #4: Think twice before you take real risks for a photo. I get it – I’m a photographer, and you want to get the shot! But it’s not a bad idea to ask yourself if the photo is worth dying for.

Yes F4U, those unfortunates most probably have passed on their genes.
That is closer than I would have got PM. I think my slight phobia about heights was because I fell down the basement stairs when almost 5. Thought I could walk down the stairs but only made on step before going head first. Part way down went over the edge and landed on a piece of machinery (planer) and then the concrete floor. No broken bones but knocked myself out.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ is another place that has multiple deaths because of people getting too close and falling off. I went there in 2015 for a sunrise seeing we missed the sunset the night before. I had a nightmare the night before that I fell off, literally freaked me for the rest of our trip. So when we got there in the morning and saw people standing on the edge I had the hardest time just looking at them. I had to crawl just to get this shot. This place has 2-3 deaths per year. When we pulled in, a large tourist bus of Asian people climbed off and were standing on the edge with their back do it getting their selfies... Deaths at the Grand Canyon. Last year we hit the Grand Canyon, weather was misting so the ground was wet. You think that stopped people from getting right on the edge for their picture. As a photographer I've put myself in some spots that probably weren't the brightest, but even I have my limits.

Thanks for photos Top Gun nice shots. I'm afraid of heights ..... like Panzer, 10 ft is as close i wish to get to a drop-off. If a trail is too close to an edge i start to freak out

Anyone been on this? It only juts out 70 ft and is 4000 ft above the canyon floor.

Text from a letter to the editor I read in the Manchester (NH) Union-Leader a couple years ago. The page no longer exists or I’d provide the link as proof, because it sounds like a joke. To the Editor: My husband and I were hiking the Mount Jackson trail on May 27 with my son and family. We are veteran backpackers with 40 years of hiking experience. The trails in the White Mountains are a disgrace.
You have to negotiate boulders and, basically, hike rocky stream beds to gain the most meager vistas and distance. These trails are dangerous and limit safe use to only athletes. All hiking trails anywhere have potential hazards for the unprepared. But the Mount Jackson trail raises those hazards to unacceptable levels. The boulders should be reduced to proper steps and the last section should have hand holds for safety. Trail maintenance should be a state priority so that more residents of New Hampshire can enjoy the beautiful mountains without risking serious injury.
She’s right about the boulders and rocks, here’s a trip report (with pics) I wrote last year. This trail was more rocky than most, but very few trails are smooth up here. Glen Boulder Trail, 16 June 2018.

My fear of heights has gotten worse over the years, possibly much more so since I had my kids. Was at the Grand Canyon in 2017 and really could not get close to the edge. My imagination is just too vivid. Thought I would walk partway down Bright Angel Trail like all the other tourists but noped out .

yet another death at the Grand Canyon... Grand Canyon Death GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Another visitor to Grand Canyon National Park has died after falling over the edge of the South Rim, authorities said Tuesday.
A 70-year-old woman fell about 200 feet (61 meters) over the rim, the second over-the-edge death this month within the confines of the park, according to Grand Canyon officials.
The woman had been walking about 200 to 300 feet (61 to 91 meters) off a trail along the South Rim about a mile (1.6 kilometers) east of Mather Point. Park rangers got a call just after 1 p.m. that she needed help west of a popular overlook called Pipe Creek Vista.
"She fell before we could undertake a rescue," said Grand Canyon spokesman John Quinley, adding that the circumstances of the call for help were unclear.

You know what this means right? Ban all National Parks which have a potential for people getting killed!!!
That approach seems to be trendy these days.... my fear is they'll put up railings all along the scenic areas which will just kill the view.

"boatloads"? You do know Arizona is landlocked, right? And I think the "lemmings" comparison in a thread about people falling from cliffs to their deaths is either epically ironic or epically insensitive. I'm going with ironic, but I like Deadpool.

I would gladly do that if not for the ridiculous price (around $75.00 per person) $50.00 per person to shuttle you to the walkway and $25.00 to go on the walkway. Also you are not allowed to bring your own camera out there. We will be going to the South rim.

I really like this logic. It is simple, employs a generous amount of common sense and its end result is almost 100% guaranteed. You just don't find logic this natural and straightforward much these days. There is one possible contradiction to this debate. Might this simply be a result of AOC's prediction of the world ending in twelve years do to continued fossil fuel use? Maybe these folks are simply checking out early to save themselves the trouble of struggling to survive until the end? I mean, what's twelve years anyway? S!Blade<><

He survived now he should be arrested and billed for the cost of the rescue. Agreed. That happens to a few of these people, maybe others will start to realize they are responsible for their own actions and the consequences of those actions. Mankind: "Ya can't fix stupid."

Yep, if they did something stupid leave them there. Every time SAR goes to rescue an idiot out they're putting their own lives at risk.

I just got done visiting the Grand Canyon and I survived. Some idiot had to go and sit on the edge. He promptly got his butt chewed by Security.they said do it again and they’ll throw him out of the park. They had barricades about 10 feet in from the ledge but people still crossed the barricades and had to be told by Security to move back. Here's what I was talking about. You can see the Security guard coming up from the left.
