Boulder Dash, shot down on my 1st Flight. I was posted over to 213 Sqn from a Operational Training Unit along with 2 other replacement pilots. Being Senior in flight time and time in grade I was given the Acting Leader spot. We were at 10000 ft over Ventor when Me 110's dropped on us out of the clouds. Then it was a mix up. I popped away at one then looped and turn for another run at the sods, I took hits from a rear gunner ? and fuel pressure dropped the the motor stopped. sense the ailerons felt like lead, I went over the side.

Sqn scramble to cover forward airfields. I say, Swarms of e/a, wing flashes high up ( fighters ? ) spotted a least 2 flights of 6 or 9 machines then it was into them. Fired numerous times ,But hits ? then the Yellow nose boys were among us and firing along with Me 110's. One on my tail doing rolls as he fired more hits. Flipped over and ran for it. The e/a didnt follow me. Over Shoreham , I made a emergency landing.

Over Ford AF chasing Hostile 19, The Yellow Nosed boys flashed by as I avoided , spotting 2 Flights of Bombers. I made the 1st pass in a dive then turn and turn again for firing passes going thru the e/a my guns emptied out. Flipped over and dove as more 109's came down. RTB with damage. The Sqn claimed 2 shot down for 1 Hurricane from A Flight was lost.

Sqn Scarmble to cover Hornchurch, Big punch out with Hostile 44 a 30+ Raid. B flight went straight at it. A flight mixed it 2 flights of fighters Me 110 ? We knocked down 3 including mine a He 111. + 2 more smoking as they departed the area. The Sqn had 4 a/c damaged As for me, I got shot up in the melee so was going into West Malling to check. On short final, My gear would not lower and my Hydraulics must have been shot away because the flaps would not come down. The kite bounced and skidded but finally stopped as she plowed up the field next to the main Runway. The Station Commander was not happy.

Frightful scatter about then chased 1/2 way to France. Mid day a scramble toward Hendon, but ran into a flock of Me 110's no kills B flight had 3 a/c with a lot of holes.

B flight had 10 min Readiness so we were next to the machines as the Flair gun went off. As our a/c's wheels came up U could hear the Flight Leader talking to Pine Tree. Buster , angels, 15 heading towards London. from the East. After awhile , we spotted 30+ Lower and off to port. Ju 88's and He 111's . Yellow section Leader called to turn and duct attacking the 2 flights. Green section stay high in case of snappers then follow us same target. I heard Yellow 2 talking to Green 1 If Pinetree was aware that we were only 5 a/c Then we were among them firing at all. Thru the 88's thru the He111's then more 88's and out the side guns empty. Claims 2 bombers. 3 Hurricanes damaged + 1 pilot wnd ( badly ). I put down at Hornchurch to check on the New a/c coming on line the Spitfire A perfect a/c she looks like shes flying when sitting on the ground.

What a wicked game, every where bombers over London . Yellow Section took the lower flight then up headlong into the second flight. Our cover flight of 4 tried to keep the 109,s off us. By the end of the Firing run, I had a Snapper on my tail and took hits. I went into a field of Barrage Balloons to shake him. A massive ball of flame appeared behind me. He had fired on or ran into a Balloon. I didnt see him after that. The Sqn claimed 2 bombers. but lost a fighter + 4 damaged. I had to pancake mine at Stapleford AF. It was just shot to bits and wouldnt stay in the air.

I was helping around the Hanger since my kite " G " for Give Away was still being put back together. Around Tea Time, a trans port came in with dispatches and spare parts that were much needed. I hiked over to chat with the pilot while the riggers off loaded.

Wild Bill was , perhaps, the greatest Combat pilot of his Era. His can do attitude was a bold demonstration in skies above L. A., California. against a non existing enemy. I can only add my kudos to a comment made by someone coming out of a theater watching the Movie Dumbo that there goes the crazy-ist Son of a %^$# I ve ever seen.
