The success and surprisingly high sales number of those work-related sims stems from buyers who don't have the opportunity do drive big tractors, ships, trucks, buses in real-life combined with their choice of gaming style. You can play it for the what-if scenario. You can play it for the achievements or for simulating a small but growing business (the word is gamification of incentives). You can play it for reaching a Zen-like flow. You can play it for recreation without too much stress - not everything is adrenaline and action/reaction. There are a lot of children playing farm sims becaus of their fascination with big machines, there are a lot of truck enthusiast playing truck sims (from sales figures they have a higher number than us combat sim enthusiasts).

There are far worse games that don't even reach this level of variety, but are played by millions. And I rather see my young child playing a game without too much violence, he/she will have enough opportunities later in life.

What a painstakingly bus simulation can be is described in this delightful RPS article from Tim Stone about OMSI(Omnibus Simulation): https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/11/01/the-flare-path-big-bus-small-hours/

Objects in Space is quite the labor of love, and would appeal to fans of the subsim and space sim genres.

Post Scriptum.

I know a lot of pepole are put off by the MP only, and more are put off by the need to get on a microphone for the best experience, but it really is a fantastic game. And it's getting better now that armour is being addressed and made more realistic.

Steel Fury, Steel Armor Blaze Of War, Strike Fighters 2. Great, and mean GREAT single player games, I wish I could have played them MP with buddies.

The Strike Fighters games could have been much more fun in MP but it was rather limited in what you could do. All you could really fly were "instant action" missions.

If SF2 series were MP capable I'd be flying it weekly. Maybe someday the code will be released and someone will figure out how to add MP.

BattleTech.

Also, it's another one that would be awesome with co-op multi-player.
