Hey folks. I hope there is someone around knowledgeable on this. I want to play R6 3 Raven Shield again after many, many years. However I have a feeling there is some effort that goes into this. I have a Windows 7 64bit PC and I also have my original R6 3 disks and I think an expansion.. I'm hoping that it all won't be too difficult to do or finding files but I need to know what a proper install procedure is. What patches if any do I need? I recall there being some sort of free expansion made at one time that I sometimes see people recommending but I can't remember the name.(Iron something?) I was also interested in what looked like a fairly comprehensive mod that added new weapon sites and goggles and such but is that still available on ModDB?

Mainly I just would like the base game up and running and patched along with the free expansion if its necessary. I was also intrigued by the mod mentioned above but I don't know how involved modding is for the game or if its even still available as last time I checked I think it was taken down from ModDB. Thanks for any assistance.

The Rainbow Six series is a fascinating and perfect case study of a franchise that has undergone a slow and steady "dumbing down" over the years.

The first two Rainbow Six games from the late 90's (Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear) had the meticulous pre-mission planning phase. If you planned it out correctly you could pretty much let your AI team members execute the mission almost entirely on their own.

Rainbow Six: Raven Shield got rid of the pre-planning phase but at least it still rewarded playing tactically and methodically.

Rainbow Six: Lockdown is where the big decline started. You could clearly see the "arcade" process beginning.

Rainbow Six: Vegas and Vegas 2 continued this arcade trend.

Rainbow Six: Siege is essentially a completely different animal from the original two games in the series. It's largely MP focused and rewards running & gunning tactics.

“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

IMHO,

R6, R6 Athena Sword, R6 Rogue Spear and R6-3 (Raven Shield) are the only real R6, even more, only the first two R6 are the true R6 core games. Similarly, same goes with the Ghost Recon franchise. Ghost Recon, and the three expansions, Desert Seige, Thunder Island, and Jungle Storm are the only true Ghost Recon core games, the rest as with R6 just down grade the saga.
