In the past, I have used two PCs connected to the internet via wireless. Each also communicated with each other in a network.
One PC is a cheap machine that I can stand to wipe clean if there's a virus etc. The other is my good simming machine. I d/l to the cheap machine, scan, and when I'm happy I transfer to the simming machine and install whatever I downloaded.
I replaced the simming PC with a new and better one. This machine currently has Ethernet connection only. I wanted to use the same 'both connected to internet and both talk to each other' setup I had previously. Nothing very advanced. The 'good' machine is connected via ethernet to the same wireless gateway I had before, except one now uses a physical connection and one doesn't.
I made sure both machines had 'network discovery and file sharing' on and that it was a private network. Both machines can get online. I can do what I want to do the way it is now. I have transferred files back and forth no problem, and I have also set it up so that a download from the 'cheap' PC is accessible on the 'good' PC via use of a shortcut on the 'good' PC desktop if I wish.
Here's the thing- The 'good' machine has both PCs available in Network. The 'cheap' machine has only the new machine available. It does not show itself as part of the network. Question: why is that?
