PGU-28

I read on a site that the Block 50 F-16
started using a round called PGU-28 that is said to travel 3 times as far as the standard M53 round. They said the round can close the gap between the AIM 9's minimum range and the vulcan's max range.

Is this true? 3 times as far as the standard M61A ammo? If this is so, what is the maximum effective range for the M61A using this round?

The PGU-28 projectile has much improved ballistics over the earlier round. This results in a considerable reduction in drag...therefore increased projectile velocity over a longer period of time.

The end result is a round that can 'fly' further with better predictability for a given period of time.

I won't say what the actual improvement is but it has given the 20mm a new lease on life.

Remember...this is only an improvement in projectile ballistics. It has nothing to do with the gun's aiming system or the pilot flying the jet. If either of those is substandard for any reason, then all the ballistic improvements in the world won't mean much.

The PGU-28 is modelled in Janes F/A-18 Super Hornet, However I dont know how accurately it is represented!
