For a friends older PC

He has an i7-4820 that was running a GTX780 but the video card has died so he needs a new one.
I.m worried that whatever current gen card he gets might be so OTT that it will be massively bottle necked by his CPU.
He wont get second hand as he says he couldn't trust it.

So what new video card would you guys recommend to get so he doesn't run in problems ?
Nvidea or AMD he's not fussed.

Your friend's CPU is not at all bad for gaming -- assuming a good motherboard and up to date OS and drivers, etc. 4 cores are still enough.

Our AMD RX580 (cost $165 on sale) runs on a much more out of date AMD CPU (that's slower than your friend's CPU) and runs everything I play at 1080p and ultra settings at smooth frame rates. Also runs things I play at 1440p and ultra -- with occasional drops below 30FPS on heavily modded games. I have it on a 4K monitor that we use at 2K (1440p) -- 4K works but the print is too small to read (in any case, I don't recommend RX580 for 4K gaming). It is not our main PC. Obviously, there are faster FPS cards -- for more money.

Of course, Nvidia's GTX1060 6GB (3GB not recommended) can be had for $200 with some free games at the same Newegg site.

Just an opinion from a distance by an AMD fan.

I have a 4790k mated with a 1070ti that runs everything current very well at 2k resolutions. Of course your friend's motherboard and RAM are still unknowns. I have the Asus ROG with 24MB on it. The CPU is clocked 4.33.

I've just had a chat with him and gave him a few option so its up to him to decide now.
His mobo is an Asus Z170 Sabretooth with G-Skill memory
He uses a big TV at 1080p so no worries about 4K performance.

Thanks for the input guys.

Since we had this conversation, I decided to try 4K gaming with the RX580 as an experiment.

Did Assasin's Creed Odyssey with all ultra settings at full 4K and HDR. This game has the best "as received" graphics -- does not need modding or upgrading to look great. I used their built in benchmark and got 22FPS at 4K. I was surprised how it looked "almost" smooth (not smooth). It used 5GB of GPU memory (out of 8GB).

Tried playing a few minutes. I would not recommend it. But, in a pinch (while waiting for one's high end GPU to arrive), one could play this game at 4K with an RX580 and FX8350 CPU.

Oh well, you can lead a horse to water.

I just got off the phone with him and despite the given advise he went with his heart and got an RTX2060
He'd tried the Assassins creed odyssey benchmark and was getting 60fps on both high and extreme settings with VSync off.

While on the phone we both tried running the Heaven benchmark with task manager open. I get about 1000 point 50fps more than him but more importantly my CPU is running at about 25% load his is running almost pegged out.

I did warn him about bottle-necking but what you gonna do !
