Merry Christmas. This is the latest version of Ostpak Redux with a lot of changes and tweaks compared to the version I released first. Instructions below:

1. Download the manual/readme first:

2. Download the new Mod_enabler: (you wont be able to activate the mod without it)

What is Ostpak Redux?

This particular mod is bringing you the Ostpak Expansion along with the possibilities of the latest game engine in a single package.
Main changes:
- Contains the entire Ostpak Expansion
- Contains the entire Blizpak Campaign
- Latest game engine programmed by Aldo:
- 3D tracks & wheels for German and Soviet vehicles (Panzer III-IV, Panther, Tiger, Tiger II, JagdTiger, JagdPanther, T-34, IS-2, ISU series, KV1, KV2 etc.)
- Authentic & Individual vehicle & armament sounds
- Added seasmless terrain
- Updated particle effects
- Updated lightning system
- Increased view distance
- Lots of bug fixes
- 3D wheels for lot of units (Tunisia, Italy, Normandy campaigns tweaked as well)
- US units have not been updated at this point – more to come later


Installation steps:

1. Do a fresh install of Panzer Elite (suggest to use GoG SE version)
2. Download & replace the mod enabler with the one included here
3. Download Ostpak_Redux 2.0.zip - extract it's contents into the Mod folder
4. Run Mod_enabler - activate Ostpak Redux 2.0 (will take a couple of minutes to finish)
5. Run 3D_Control_Center & configure your graphichs
6. Launch the game and enjoy!

Daskal was not able to correct some maps where the original creator attempted to restrict the AI movement. If you find this situation (wingmen can not find path), the player platoon can move through this terrain if the player is in column formation and the AI wingmen are in column formation. Worst case scenario, the player must jump tanks a drive each of the wingmen through the blocking terrain.

I have followed your instructions to the t, but The Mod Enabler starts, and then stops responding.

Update: Windows 10 recommended running Enabler in Windows 8 mode. That did the trick.

Glad to hear it worked out in the end. I only have Win7 on my machine so was not able to test it on Win10.

Outstanding videos Daskal..I tried a very eary version on the GOG ol games version but and stock PE cd..But read Brits post and will try to get it in tonightcouln't get it running in win 7.With same problem WT described

I got it working on Windows 7, but keep an eye on your folder-levels. The Enabler can take some moments to open and the mod is quite large, so it takes quite a while to enable.

Great upgrade and thanks to Daskal and all concerned. These older games are matchless if they can be upgraded.

I’ve managed to get this excellent rework of PE (“mod” is inadequate to describe it, was quite blown away when I first encountered a night action!) on my Windows 7 laptop, but I can’t get it to run on the Windows 10 desktop.

The hangup seems to lie with the 3D Control Centre. When I try to open it, I get the grey Windows dialogue box, but there’s no text, either on the selection tabs, or in the little white option selection boxes. So I can’t set up the 3D options, meaning that when I try to run Panzer Elite, I get the “no Setting.HAL” failure message.

Is there any way around this please?

Mike, I know nothing of Windows 10, other than the frequent reports I come across that it isn't very compatible with a number of older games, such as EAW, BoBII and now Panzer Elite, it appears.

All I can tell you is that I have been following 33Lima's reviews of his BoBII campaigns over at CombatAce, where he described how he managed to install an alternative Win 7 boot-up very cheaply into his Win 10 pc, enabling him to play BoBII in a more satisfactory manner. I think he spent about £50 and that was for a legit copy. He now has the best of both worlds.

Panzer Elite should work with Windows 10 as well. It requires DirectX9c to be installed, which is not part of Win10. So you'll need to install Directx9c. See below thread:

Thanks Daskal,

I've now installed DirectX9c, but still no joy.

I still have the problem with the 3D Control Centre, with no text showing in any of the selection tabs and boxes, and because I can't run the control centre, I still get the “no Setting.HAL” failure message when I try to run Panzer Elite.

Is there any way around this problem please, short of a Win7/10 dual boot?

Your missing a file. You did not run 3Dconfig when you installed the game.

But Aldo I’m trying to run 3D config, but it’s not working properly. No text shows in any of its tabs or boxes.

What I need is some way of forcing 3D config to run correctly under Win10. Either that or a workaround to copy the right files into the right places.

BTW does Panzer Elite “hide” any important files in a directory away from its main one, such as on the C: drive? I have all my sims inc PE on the G: drive.

sorry for such a late reply. I avoid the internet.

there are 2 versions of 3Dconfig. The original and the version I created with Delphi 7 (personal). The version I created allowed you to downgrade the graphics detail for all the tlbs we had added. I would try the original version first. Both versions should be set to auto for texture detail. The check box degrades detail.

PE does not hide any files. That is how she hooked me onto the path of modding.

PE is an elder game. It assumes that it can write to your hard disk. Modern operating systems and antivirus attempt to limit this. Your antivirus may be blocking 3D config. 1 of 10 times compiling, AVAST would delete my new build of the game source code because it was "new".

Looking for some help, trying to get PE back up and running after a few years gap and the PC is now on Win10 and using a GT710 Graphics board with 2 gig of memory, PC has 12 gig memory installed but Win 10 uses 8 Gig and reserves 4 gig (no idea what that means).

I followed the instructions as per the first post using the GOG SE edition as the starting point.

Had a number of issues but have been following the fixes such as installing DirectX 9.0c and giving all the exe's compatibility mode settings and making them run as administrator. I can get the game to run up to and including the PE splash screen with lightening but then it goes blank except for mouse cursor. Desertfoxlog is reporting a fatal error

When you run 3D config, does it show that you have a texture memory?

You will find that older games work better if you do not install them into the programs folder. I recommend installing it to (drive letter):/PE

That particular bug has been in Ostpak for a long time. It has never been shown to be a fatal crash. I have left that warning as fatal so moders will still record an error with there textures, even when debug mode is not set.

Unrelated to answering the post
This is caused when a moder adds and deletes large amounts of texture sections. The object editor and the game can now use sections of a 256x256 texture, so hopfully anyone modding is not adding and subtracting sections to the tlb. The tlb is essentially a texture atlas. It's maximum width is 256 pixels. A full tlb is 16 256x256 textures. The current build allows for 32 tlbs. This is 512 256x256 textures available to paint units and landscape objects. The original game allowed 112. I left myself notes in the code for expand it to 64 and 128 tlbs. The 2 things stopping UV wrapping is the minimum width and height of 16 pixels and the fact that the OE can only work with quads, not triangles.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

On the install, all the exe's are set tp XP sp2 and to run as admin, the full folder structure has been set to readable and the files from earlier runs copied to virtual store deleted. That should in theory be the same as running outside 'program files' but will be doing a fresh install from my original disc to c:/PE later as Microsoft do do weird things..

Then 3D config is working properly. "PE"/data/setting.HAL should match the time stamp for the last time you successfully ran 3D config.

I am not sure where to go from here. I do not have Win10 and I am done with hardware upgrades. I am still happy with Win98. You could try setting compatibility to Win98 as that was a pure 32 bit operating system.

I still suspect that the amount of ram you have is causing the negative number in the error log for required free texture memory. This would be the same type of error experienced with 3Dconfig and video cards with greater then 2 gigs of memory.

Setting it to Win 98 and also Win 95 compatibility did not work. So will try a fresh install. The PC is Win 10 Pro so may try Hyper V and install a Virtual Win Xp 32 bit or similar.

Well installing Hyper V has completely hosed my Win 10 install, it will not reboot even after using system restore and system repair gives up so last option is a full reinstall of Win 10. This is the last straw with Win 10 and may go Linux instead. Staying with 98 seems like a good idea.

Sorry to hear PE Redux 2.0 isn't working.

Iv'e got W10 x64 and except for some external FOV's I'm still chasing, PE RDX is running fine. I installed on separate hd and followed the suggested setup guide; all .exe's @ XP Sp2 and didn't run the Control Center until after RDX was enabled.

FOVs are stored in PE/data/misc. They are stored as the view draw size. The original PE 1.2 stores the cone as CVL(size).DAT. PEx stores the cone as BVL(size).DAT. I forget which version MY's last code version uses. All versions recreate and save the cone if it is not found. The cone size is determined by the camera magnification. In PEx and MY mods (if I remember correct), the cone is also dependent on the weather.

So, you should delete the view cones if you suspect the stored version does not match the build of the game engine you are using.

3Dfx, Nvidia and AMD display the cone a little different. The view cone was one of the earliest code mods (extended view ranges). In the early days, we did not know that the cone used a stored version. Since then, moders did there best to adjust there code values to work on all available drivers.

The most common error from a mismatch is landscape polygons not being drawn at the left and right extents of the screen. If deleting a view cone does not correct the error, the chances are that the video card driver has changed there math.

Edit:
Note: the mod enable will only know of these view cone changes if the original creator of the mod knew of the stored .DAT file and supplied replacement versions

Edit2:
FOVs are a float value that is hard coded into the game engine. Screen resolution affects this value. If deleting the BVLs of Redux do not correct the error, delete the BVLs and try a different screen resolution (3DConfig).

Edit3:
Note! there will be a delay while the CPU (PE does not use your GPU) rebuilds any missing FOVs upon switching cameras. The the cameras are 1x (default), 2.5x (binoculars and most optics), and 5x (optic zoom). If you view all 3 cameras at the start of the mission, then you will not have a delay later in the scenario

Well I found a way to change the memory Win 10 sees without taking out the memory sticks so will give that a try.

Once you have system configuration up click on the 'Boot' tab and then on 'Advanced options' , you can then set the maximum memory Win 10 will see.

I have already tried deleting the BVL files but still got the same errors.

Thanks Daskal, I'm really enjoying OstPak Redux 2. I had not played PE for years but I wanted to give this mod a try. So I bought PE-se from GOG installed it and the mod with no significant problems on a Win 7/64 bit build - The pdf instructions made it clear how to install. The only hitch was the "3D_Control_Center.exe" utility didn't allow me to select the resolution I wanted inially. I solved that by allowing win 7 to select the compatibility setting for the 3D utility. It selected Win Xp Service pack 3. I'm now running 1920x 1080 32bit ( GTX 1660) and it plays and looks great.

FYI: TrackIR users . TrackIR 5's mouse emulation (TIRMouse.exe) works for PEse ( with OstPak Redux 2.0). Being an older game PE is not on the official list of enhanced games(btw steel beast pro is). However, it still can be used for mouse views in the x and y (yaw/ pitch) dimensions which is enough to view the PE battlefield.

Still very impressed with the updates, fine modeling, terrain, and new game engine programmed by Aldo. Wingmen and game logic also seems better.

A fourth view range has been added. The default key is alt-F4. If a large enough memory block is not avalible, the view range will default to alt-F1

The commanders external view and binocular view can be toggled to lock on a specific target by selecting any object or position with the mouse. If the mod has a gunnery range listed in the single scenario selection, go there to learn the controls. PEDG first created this scenario to test the ballistics. It was released to all moders as a training aid for players.

If you have any problem setting up your platoon, click on the ADC ( the guy in the pre scenario screen not associated to a tank ) this will bring up a note pad that allows you to edit all of the clickable functions of the arming screen.

The menu code assumes you have closed any unwanted popup displays. If the popup images seem "odd" then go to that type of popup image and close the open popup.

If must hold a mouse button, or single click to toggle, to pan the camera is a setting within the player preferences.

If you have specific game play questions, please post a new thread in this forum or PEDGs. I do not wish to hijack Daskal's release thread.

In the PE folder you should find the manual and original key code pdfs. There should also be a file labeled PE_Tutorial.Doc where the original developers give a "little tutorial".

I found this old article from Tanksim helpful for tactical and crew campaign tips.

In PEse with Ostpak Redux 2 mod there are two single scenario's labelled "Brit 5 Firing Range" for both German and Allied equipment-Very useful for adjusting german optics.

A good video walkthrough would help bring in new players.

Jesus, you guys are amazing still supporting this game. We have the 20th anniversary this month, 2 decades ago and this game is still rolling. I am Teut, the creative director and designer of this thing, also founder and ceo of the original developer Wings Simulations. I wrote a small blog post about PE here:

THANK YOU, for heading a team that created such a moddable game! And thank you for letting me have such access to it. frown sorry I am not as good with people as you are. There was a chance to merge PE with PEA, but I had offended all the other modders by then.

You forgot to mention how advanced the scenario and object tools were/are. It was not that long ago that I was trying to explain to people how the SE could multi-layer landscape textures WAY more then they have seen (even in Ost Redux).

Markus passed frown That is a sad thing. I have read his notes in the code many times. It is not hard to spot how critical he was to the game.

Last year the community lost the person who identified the bug in terrain morphing over internet when it was modded. frown after 20 years we loose the best. God speed Markus and Slomo!

Brit ,,,,a while back i tried to get Ostpack running with no luck..reading this thread i decided to try again and to my joy it runs fine now finally I've reinstalled Win 7 a couple of times since my last attempt and finally got it running !! Very pleased with the mod good work there !!Thank You

Glad it works, but the mod is not mine. Redux is a project done by Dascal. My only contributions were working with Daskal and Slomo for what they wanted from the game engine.

Yes, some of us folks are still playing (attempting to play) this fun sim. I find the new games a POOR attempt at entertainment, nothing is customizeable, very little single player content if any (so very little time spent on the project), and therefore very little replayability or addictiveness. Anyways, I have a few questions for any PE experts out there... in the past few days with hours spent on the game trying to play new campaigns... I notice many bugs... of course it is an old game and I'm on win7... I hate to think what the win10 etc folks might run into. First question, I have a few "1.2 patch" downloads and everytime I install I see no difference in the main exe file... always it says 1.0.0.2 or similar as version, same as what is on my "special edition" cd/dvd - not sure if this is normal. Secondly, I have noticed even when I use the newer mod enabler, it seems to make duplicates of many files putting "ostpak redux" on the end of the name... these don't get removed when I inactivate the mods... Thirdly, I run into many crash to desktop errors if I use my 1920 x whatever and 32-bit screen resolution with the graphics program on many of the mods, I have Nvidia decent card... Ostpak redux fares better in this regard but I've already done most of the missions, the italian ones tend to crash here as well however. I noticed None of the mods seem to tolerate each other, and the enabler is so slow and sloppy that bugs are the rule rather than the exception.. mod enabler is very slow and seems to have difficulty..... I know I sound negative but actually I'm just looking for some clarification and advise... ALSO.. it is NOT CLEAR what is included in PE three vs. Ostpak redux... I have had success with both installed but I wonder if one includes all of the other so they are redundant? Sorry for all the questions. If this thing had a real mission builder (it shouldn't take long for a real programmer to make one).. I would be willing to spend a few bucks on it..... Long as there are german campaigns i am happy... I can't play for the wrong side... thanks for any help, and THANKS for the work done on the mods... Meanwhile I am enjoying the old good games, Jane's WW2F, Red Baron 3D, etc.
