Honorable man, served his country with humility. I hope he is hugging his wife right now.

Salute to a war veteran and, seen from across the Atlantic, one of the last true gentlemen to hold the office.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

From the British point of view, he appreciated the 'special relationship' between our countries, and with PM Mrs, Thatcher. Though she did have to rebuke him with "Well, all right, George, but this is no time to go wobbly," over decisions to take action after the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. And he was instrumental in the ending of the Cold War. Here he is being rescued after ditching in the Pacific. Lucky that a US sub was so close in the vast Pacific.

Actually, the submarine only just got him out of the water and away ahead of a Japanese boat trying to capture them. It was close inshore:
" During their attack, the Avengers encountered intense anti-aircraft fire; Bush's aircraft was hit by flak and his engine caught fire. Despite the fire in his aircraft, Bush completed his attack and released bombs over his target, scoring several damaging hits.[4] With his engine ablaze, Bush flew several miles from the island, where he and one other crew member of the TBM bailed out;[8] the other man's parachute did not open.[4] Bush waited for four hours in an inflated raft, while several fighters circled protectively overhead, until he was rescued by the submarine USS Finback, on lifeguard duty.[4] For the next month, he remained in Finback and participated in the rescue of other aviators. Several of those shot down during the attack were executed, and their livers were eaten by their captors.[9] A radio operator from the Japanese unit that shot down Bush plane was American citizen Nobuaki Iwatake, a Japanese American who had settled in Japan six months before Pearl Harbor and was drafted into the Japanese Imperial Army in 1943.[10] This experience shaped Bush profoundly, leading him to ask, "Why had I been spared and what did God have for me?"[11]
:
"You'll never take me alive" said he, And his ghost may be heard if you pass by that billabong "Who'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me?"

One of the best Presidents. The last to have served in WW2. RIP President Bush , He should be an example for he served his country not only wih patriotism but dignity and moderation too. Mad Max , not exactly true , the still alive French former president Valéry Giscard D 'Estaing, voluntered in sept 44 in the French Forces although he had before him the ability to study further (he did that afetrwards briliantly) and served as a gunner on a M10 Tank Destroyer in Germany in 1945: He behaved very gallantly and came back with a Croix de Guerre ...and a Bronze Star (US of course) Surprinsingly, these facts never came in line during his political carreer and are absolutely unknown of the common french people.
