I had what appears to be a cooling failure on my six-year old Mach V. I can't afford to buy another like it at what I spent for it, and haven't really kept up with current tech.

Things I think I can salvage: 8 4GB sticks of 1866MHz DDR3 RAM, 1 TB ssd, 2 TB hd, GTX 1080, optical drive.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to proceed, where to buy a system, preferably somewhere that'll sell me something with a case, mobo, power supply, and CPU installed and let me handle the rest? Or at least something that's no so cost-prohibitive as buying something that was top of the line like mine was 6 years ago?

My budget is probably going to max out around $1K.

Yeesh. Why buy a new case?

Head over to Microcenter, buy a new PSU, a mobo and CPU, then put them in your existing box. I wouldn't expect to spend more than ~700 - 800 if you're getting a higher end CPU/Board, with about 250 for the board, 300 - 350 for the CPU and another 100ish for the PSU.

I think part of the failure in mine is either related to the PSU fan or the CPU water cooling. I heard some clicking (NOT from the hard drive) and then it slowed massively. Task manager shows it only running at .24 GHz when it should be 3.2.

My motherboard is an Asus P9X79 Pro, if that helps.

Falcon NW just called me back... the rep says he's 99% sure this is a water cooling issue, and a new cooler is $100+shipping. I've got that on the way and it should be here on Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Water coolers apparently last around 5 years on average and my system is 6.5 years old.

psu fan failure will not cause what you're describing, i would get someone knowledgeable about gaming pc's to look at it for you.

it could be a psu failure resulting in loss of voltage, or your cpu could be heat throttling (tho unlikely)

if you were not massively overclocking it, it probably is not dead. pay a hundred bucks for someone to come check it for you.

alternatively use some apps like cpufan, coretemp, etc. to look at the voltages and temperatures and check the cpu in the bios to see if the voltages and / or multipliers have been messed with.

I built my last 2 PCs with help from the people on this site.
https://pcpartpicker.com/

I never had any issues building the two PCs. First build is going strong after 5 years and second build was done last year. Note that I am technically dis-inclined (haha) so I do not use overclocking stuff for the cpu or gpu. All the games I play run fine (iracing, ACC, AC, ArmA3 being the main use) on the newer build. imho, ymmv

I’ll definitely keep that in mind if the new cooler doesn’t work!

If the CPU and stuff is still working, then I agree that it's probably a cooling issue.

One thing to think about is pricing a new power supply unit, which can be pretty inexpensive.

When my previous computer started acting wonky and then died, it turned out to be just that. It wasn't providing the right voltage over the system.

[edit]

Of course Longbow mentioned this before me.

Sigh.

Now it looks like I'm just trying to look smart.

That sounds just like mine, I put in a Corsair H-80 water cooler for the CPU in 2012 and it died on me over the summer, now got a replacement H-80i V2 which has a much bigger radiator core, it also has 2 fans but I'm only using one of them as the difference between using 1 or 2 fans is so small as to be negligible. so far it is much quieter than the H-80 it replaced and miles better than the air cooling that I had before. loudest thing in the case is the GTX760

CPU is an i7 965 and about 10 years old now as is the motherboard and only capable of taking up to 24GB DDR3 1600 RAM which it has.

My CPU is an i7-3930K at 3.2GHz. I’m not overclocking it.

The cooler they’re sending me has two fans. Wish I had an air compressor so I could blow dust out. The little can of air isn’t doing anything.

Cooler kit came in via UPS yesterday, and FNW called me this afternoon to walk me through it. System is back up and running, and idling in Windows at about 43/113 degrees. thumbsup
