I've always wondered which one to do first. I had watched the star wars trilogy on the big screen as a teen many moons ago and stayed out of touch since then. So, I decided to pick up where I left off and googled where to start watching star wars from. I found a reasonable list and started with Episode 1. I didn't care for the movie, but the story seemed interesting. I looked up audiobooks and found that all star wars movies have them. Episode 1 was like 9 hours. I'm glad I watched the movie first. It helped me imagine the scenes, characters and atmosphere easily.

Now, I'm not sure if I should waste time watching the other star wars movies before moving on to the books. I gave it some thought and decided that I'll probably need to watch the movies first in order to catch up on the terminology and world/universe setting. I just feel that it's very disappointing to watch bad acting and a story full of holes with no real tie in between scenes. Historical perspectives are especially important in order to understand the fantastic universe of star wars. I don't mind if the movie is good like the Jason Borne series because then the movie is like a synopsis of the book and not a bunch of scenes strung together with Hollywood style action thrown in for entertainment.

What’s funny for me is that while I have seen all of the Star Wars films, I have never been interested in reading their novelizations. I think it’s mostly because the Star Wars films are not intellectually complex so watching the film is more than enough for me.

Contrast this though with films like Dune and 2001: A Space Odyssey whereby the books are absolutely worth reading since they contain additional details that were left out of their respective films. For both Dune and 2001 I watched the film first but later on read the books.
