Morning Patrol: No contact, but we did fly under a enemy flight. Maybe it was luck or the Huns wanted to go home because they never came down.

Ring around the Rosie. 2 Hun Scouts came in high to get the Balloon we were defending. As they came screaming down they split up one full speed for the Gas Bag the other attacking us. My 2 wing mates went after the Sausage attacker I took on the other turning and climbing. I chased the e/a for awhile hitting him over No Mans Land finally his wing came off down on the deck. I took a few holes from him and from ground fire but made it back Score : we got them both., but lost an SE 5 that crashed on landing ? and Gas Bag.went up and burned The Major was not Happy.

Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM AO RA
122 confirmed kills

Two of the Amerikaner SPADs have been credited to Hahn.
Both Schwarm Eins and Zwei have been sent to intercept enemy planes heading for the factories at Rethel. With the increasing enemy activity in the region it was a good idea to sent both flights together. Fuchs was ecstatic to fly in the same sortie as Hahn albeit in separate Kette. There were no enemy planes to be seen over the factories. Zygmunt took both flights on a tour of the frontlines in hopes of catching a fat two-seater or two but the skies were devoid of any activity and the Fliegers came back home empty handed.

Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM AO RA

Zygmunt thought today they would have it easy. They were sent to patrol over friendly aerodrome at Saint-Remy-le-Petit. It was the neighbouring airfield and they didn’t have far to go. They’ve arrived over the aerodrome quickly and began to climb to their patrol altitude. As always, Flak would point the way to the enemy planes, which arrived above the field at significantly higher altitude. Ziggy continued to crane his neck and track the bandits. They were soon diving to meet the Germans and Zygmunt had to bank hard to get out of the way. As the enemy plane flew by, he could see the imposing shape of the bomber. These were the Bréguets and they meant business. Well, business was what Hahn was after. He had the bomber soon on the defensive and struggling to evade Ziggy’s well aimed volleys. Soon a stream of grey smoke began to trail the French machine. A few more rounds and the enemy plane was diving towards the ground where it exploded into thousands of small pieces.

YouTube Link

Zygmunt now saw the other bomber above being chased by one of his flight mates. They continued to go after him all the way to the frontlines and to the enemy airfield at Courcy. It was there that Zygmunt witnessed his wingman shoot the bomber down in flames. The large machine dropped like a rock in front of his plane and continued towards the ground.

YouTube Link

They were about to turn back when another flight of Bréguets accompanied by silver Strutters arrived and was getting ready to land. Hahn couldn’t let such an opportunity pass him by. He ordered attack and plunged straight in. At first he wanted to go after the Bréguets, but after one of the Strutters presented himself as an easier target, he went after it. Ziggy sparred for a while making sure the gunner had no clear shot. He was slowly chipping away at it and soon would have him. Only a few more bursts. Suddenly he felt an unbearable pain in his stomach. It was ice and fire at the same time. He looked down. There was blood.

The sky became dark unusually quickly this evening. It was cold and getting colder. A man was standing outside the Kasino smoking a cigarette and trying to warm his hands against the burning fire inside an oil drum. The loud singing from inside the Kasino muffled the footsteps of another man approaching. The men inside were drunk and rowdy. Their song carried clearly across the aerodrome:

Ich bin ein freier Wildbretschütz und hab ein weit Revier.
Ich bin ein freier Wildbretschütz und hab ein weit Revier.
So weit die braune Heide geht, gehört das Jagen mir.

Horrido, - horrido, - horrido, horrido, horrido, (hussasa! )
Horrido, - horrido, - horrido, horrido, horrido, (hussasa! )

Tybelsky was rubbing his eyes from the smoke blowing his way. He threw the butt of his cigarette into the burning oil drum.
“- Any news, Franz?” He greeted the man.
“- Ja, the balloon crew near Reims observed a lone Albatros crash in No-Man’s Land. There was no fire. It just went down. It could have been him.”

“- That’s terrible news. We’ll have to let the men know.”
“- Nah, not yet. Let them blow off some steam first.”
“- Does Fuchs know? I know the three of you were close.”
“- No he doesn’t. I told him Hahn had to put down near the Front.”

“- We’re going to miss him”
“- We will, but that’s war. We’ll get on with it and life will go on.”
“- Right, any idea who’s going to take command of Jasta?”
“- No idea. Apparently they have someone transferring from Jasta 14 in less than a fortnight.”
“- Jasta 14? You don’t say!”

7 confirmed kills

Fuchs was angry. His Jastaführer was dead. He should know, he carried his medals on a velvet pillow during this morning’s ceremony. He was surprised he had earned this many. There wasn’t even a body to bury. The place where he crashed yesterday had been shelled completely by enemy artillery. Rudi demanded blood. Vengeance would be his and it would be exacted on all enemy planes he encounters.
Their mission today was to escort a DFW from FA(A) 290b on a recon of enemy front lines near Reims.
As soon as they reached the rendezvous point and began their escort duty, all hell broke loose. A much higher flying formation of SPADs descended on them. The recon crate bolted north and Rudi noticed one of the enemies went after it. Fuchs followed but soon he was being chased by another SPAD. They sparred for a while. The French machine went into a corkscrew dive, but Rudi followed firing continuously. The French plane never recovered. He remembered the hunting song they were all singing last night in the Kasino. The last time he was happy before Tybelsky told him the terrible news. He felt like singing now.
“- Horrido, - horrido, - horrido, horrido, horrido, hussasa!”

YouTube Link

Rudolf soon spotted another battle raging nearby. Two SPADs were entangled in a fight with one Albatros. Fuchs raced to even the odds. He was soon below waiting for the fight to descend to his level. It didn’t take long. Both of the SPADs were too busy to notice a second German machine approaching and quickly one of them paid the price. Rudi continued to fire until the SPAD turned upside down and dove into the ground.
“- Horrido, hussasa!”

YouTube Link

The battle was now spread all over the area and it was more difficult to spot individual fights. Fuchs was heading toward another one when he noticed just in time an enemy machine descending on his tail. He thought it’ll chop his rear off with its prop, but the young Flieger was able to just barely avoid the collision. It didn’t take long to return the favour and fill it full of holes. It was a silver Strutter and it went down to Fuchs’ satisfaction.
“- Horrido!”

He could then join the original fight he was heading for. By now the two planes were at a very low level and as soon as Rudi showed up the other Albatros disengaged and headed for home. Fuchs on the other hand was more than happy to take over and eliminate another silver Strutter. It exploded mid-air.
“- Horrido!”

YouTube Link

Rudolf was now also making his way back to base, but not before sneaking up behind a lone SPAD trying to make his way across the Front at low altitude. It was easy. The Franzose never saw him and reacted too late before being crippled and crashing into the ground.
“- Horrido, hussasa!”

YouTube Link

By now Fuchs, low on ammunition, was desperate to return home and avoid any encounters, but it wasn’t meant to be. One of the highflying Frenchmen in yet another silver Strutter spotted him and began to track him. Rudi reluctantly engaged and quickly brought his foe down. He then proceeded immediately straight back to base singing his favourite verse:
“- Horrido, - horrido, - horrido, horrido, horrido, hussasa!”

Oh, crikey!! nope nope nope

Fullofit, I was just about to congratulate you on your latest victory tabulation to read that Hahn is no more! This can't be true!?? The Germans are doomed now!

As Carrick says, "war is 'ell!"

Edit: Fitting that you were brought down by a Strutter. At least Rudi doesn't seem to be bothered by them and swats them down like flies!

Thanks Bob, around 120 seems to be my limit. After that the sim comes up with weird obstacles to overcome, like rear gunners or structural failures. It’s my fault, I should have landed right there on the spot instead of trying to bring him across the lines and bleeding out to death.
As to Germans being doomed, far from it. Rudi has taken over. There is still hope.

I've already grown to like Rudi a lot. He's a real pip!

As for bleeding out like that, 122 victories can make you feel invincible. Must have been the adrenaline.

My "favorite" way to go are random engine fires. Lovely. lawncareby20mm

Hmm, I would have thought Tybelsky would steal the show. copter
As to those engine fires, never happened with a Mercedes engine. Must be specific to those half-baked Entente death traps.

I spotted one chap on the outside in a turn so he became my target. Firing stated at long range got hits ? Fullofit,

I can't believe that it finally happened to Ziggy. The man had so many close calls and seemed untouchable. And to think that in the end it was a stray shot from a lowly Strutter! I am sure you will need a short period to regroup but I hope you will be back in the air quickly with a new fellow. It is your intention to pick up with Rudi? Otherwise, drop me a line.

120 does seem to be the hard ceiling in the sim! Who had more, Ziggy or Toby?

Back in the air again…

War Journal of Flight Commander George Ewan MacAlister, DSC

8 Squadron, RNAS
Mont-St-Eloi, France

Part 16

No 11 CCS saw to my wound quickly and efficiently. The doctor administered a local anaesthetic while he cleaned the wound and sewed it up, leaving a small opening for drainage. He chatted while he worked, occasionally pausing for a draw on a cigarette held by an orderly. “It’s a game of inches and quarter-inches,” he said. “This is just a graze and I’m being overly cautious by allowing for drainage. Another quarter-inch and you’d be home for three months. Take another quarter-inch beyond that and you’d have died in the air. As it is, you’ll be flying inside of a fortnight.”

They had me back to Mont-St-Eloi in two days, fully stitched up with instructions for the Medical Officer to examine the wound every other day and for me to report any change in colouring. Squadron Commander Draper welcomed me back with three days of duty officer work, explaining that it was the most productive thing I could do. I spent my days censoring mail for the lower deck and was intrigued to learn which of the men were budding Casanovas and which were disciples of Barnacle Bill. My other duties were the routine ones: prying the men loose from their mess at the end of the evening, checking on the guard, inspecting the galley, and drinking gallons of tea.

We have been issued with “Sidcots.” These were a form of coverall made from oilcloth with a quilted lining – quite windproof and wonderfully comfortable for flying in. Strangely, they are not that warm when worn on the ground lounging about but they do their job at altitude and have become our standard rig when in the air. I got the sailmaker to repair my flying boots, which had been cut by the round that hit my calf. Draper issued me a wound stripe which, together with a fine ash plant, will let me cut a dashing figure in Glasgow when I get home on leave.

A new man named Bowne has acquired Colton’s bed space in our cabin. He is a Geordie who spent time in the merchant marine before joining the RNVR. Good sort. We had a run into St-Pol the other day and bought reams of coloured cloth to decorate our living space. Each of us has fashioned a wooden frame in the outline of a room and we have attacked the cloth to the frame, giving us walls and a bit of colour. I bought a book about modern French art and have framed two or three illustrations from it to decorate my walls. The overall effect is quite homey. White insists that we have created a firetrap and he is likely correct, but the overall effect is worth the risk.

At last today, 25 January 1918, I was cleared to fly. I led a formation of six machines over to Lens to bomb a rail siding. We made a fine job of it and saw no EA. It was a simple over-and-back. Rumour has it that the German flyer Hahn has been killed. He was apparently stationed down south and brought down by a French two-seater.

Carrick, never heard of him!

Raine, Toby had 4 more kills, but he did have a better machine.
I think Rudi will take over from Ziggy, let’s how far he can get, especially that he’s on a roll.
Good thing George is back to fighting form. As to this Hahn character, I hear von Richthofen was glad. Now he has a chance to catch up.

Four of the claims from yesterday have been confirmed. Rudi was now Kanone. Fuchs and Tybelsky organized a subdued celebration. It was too soon after Hahn’s crash to hold a party.
Today’s mission brought them to Annelles to patrol over the friendly aerodrome. Once there, Fuchs noticed a fight already in progress. There were two tan SPADs chasing after a single Albatros. Rudi joined the fight to even the odds. He tangled with one of them and shot him down near Sommepy. He then observed the other pair still circling each other. Fuchs soon joined the dogfight and eliminated the second SPAD.

As he was looking for the rest of his Schwarm to form up he spotted by chance one more SPAD attempting to sneak up on him from behind. They battled for a while and Rudi noticed a profile of an Indianer’s head painted on the fuselage. This SPAD too was taken out after a prolonged battle. The Schwarm returned to base without further incidents.

"Another long burst sent it down in flames."

26 January 1918 – a memorable day! Orders arrived last night before dinner, as is usual. It usually happens while we are enjoying a drink in the anteroom a half hour or so before the meal. The despatch rider from Wing tramps into the squadron office. The RO downs his drink and heads for his desk. Twenty minutes later, Squadron Commander Draper reads out our assignments for the next day. For the most part, Wing has given us a free hand to patrol our sector, but today there are a couple of special jobs. There is an escort job in the afternoon and a morning patrol over to Lens to shoot up the rail siding we bombed yesterday and disrupt any repair attempts. The latter task is assigned to me and a composite flight: the squadron commander, Bowne, Jordan, Johnstone, Dennett, and White.

I wanted to carry Cooper bombs but we were short. So we ran out the machines around 9 o’clock and prepared to take off. Just as I was about to roll there was a great hullo – air Huns on our side of the lines! A large group of Albatri dived on us when we were scarcely airborne and a merry scrap began directly over the field. Dennett flashed in front of me followed by a Hun. I got on the tail of the German and fired a short burst which clearly killed the pilot, for the machine nosed down and flew directly into the earth below. Within seconds, another Albatros flew across my front from right to left. I fired a burst from 150 yards away and saw the machine roll on its back and die vertically towards the ground. I turned to confront another Albatros that was diving on me. We exchanged bursts as we approached head on. His missed. Mine did not. His machine was clearly damaged and I got behind it. Another long burst sent it down in flames.

The surviving Huns had run off by now so we regrouped and headed for Lens. As we approach that city, three enemy two-seaters flew directly overhead. I search the bright morning sky and saw a large formation of scouts about a half-mile further east and a thousand feet higher. We climb towards them and they chose to engage us. The EA turned out to be Pfalz scouts, which we handled easily. I caught one in a zoom and killed its pilot. Scarcely a minute later I sent another down fluttering in pieces. We gathered ourselves and headed home, low on ammunition. We had had two scraps in the space of twenty minutes, destroyed eight enemy machines, and lost no one! I claimed five machines myself: three Albatri and two Pfalz. In the end three were confirmed as destroyed and two recorded as merely driven down, this due to lack of witnesses. Still, my score stood at twenty-nine official victories and I had shown myself I was ready to return to action.

“- Herr Leutnant!” Rudi waved at his friend as he walked into the Kasino. “- Come, sit, have a drink.”
“- Rudi, good to see you. What are we celebrating?” Tybelsky looked tired.
“- How about two SPADs from yesterday which have just been confirmed?”
“- Well now, that is something worthy of a drink or two. Prost!” Tybelsky raised his glass. “- How was today’s show?”
“- Wunderbar!” The young pilot downed his drink. “- We were assigned airfield defence over Le Chatelet. It seemed like it would be a walk in the park, but the SPADs had a different idea. They attacked just north of Saint-Loup.” Rudi sipped from his glass. “- I had to fight one off and it was a chore. The Frenchman knew what he was doing and always ended up on my rear. We exchanged some shots while going head to head but nothing definitive. Finally the Franzose tired of this game and disengaged. There was no way of catching him."

"- I then turned back and scanned the skies for more action. I found another SPAD chasing after one of ours. It didn’t take long to swoop down and catch up to the enemy plane. I came from behind, lined up my gunsights and ... RAT-TAT-TAT!” Tybelsky jumped in his seat at the sudden sound Fuchs made. “- He squirmed a lot while I was following him, but there was no hope for the Frenchman. One of his wings came off and ...” Fuchs flew his hand down imitating a falling aeroplane and smacked his open palm on the tabletop. He then wiped his hands as if dusting them off to signal the end of his story. Tybelsky smiled, raised his glass and toasted the young pilot.

“- So, there we were on our way to take out the gasbag hanging south of Reims when we were attacked from above. It was a familiar sight: a gaggle of SPADs coming down to greet our Schwarm. I was lucky to catch one of the devils who was distracted attacking another Albatros and I went after him. I must have done a number on the French machine’s control cables because it started to do inverted spins and some such before crashing in No-Man’s Land."

"- Just a little later I had another one in my sights. He was fighting Leusch. As soon as the Franzose saw me coming, he ran for the hills, but I was able to catch up to him and I shot him full of holes. The SPAD was heavily damaged and spiralled down, trailing a tail of vapour. It also smashed into No-Man’s Land."

"- By this time I was ready to return and was on my way when I spotted a solitary Strutter flying in the distance. It was painted silver and the gunner spotted me as well. The Franzose fired at me but I was able to keep my machine out of harm’s way. It took me some time but I filled the crate full of lead and it just exploded in front of me. Nasty business! It was back to base post haste after that. How was your day?”

Jan 27, 1918.

I thought that I had another one in the bag. On line Patrol with 9 a/c ran into two flights of Huns One to the right and the other to the left. I guess it was a Pincer movement. A rather untidy fur ball started with circling e/a and firing mg's I did a lot of snap shooting got some good hits on a black tailed machine who rolled over then spun down out of control thats when I lost him due to another Hun diving on me. He overshot and my wing man got him. We claimed 4 Destroy but it was downgraded to 2 Mine was reject due to lack of witness WE lost 2 SE's Destroyed + 3 Damaged and 1 pilot wnd/ Forced down on our side of lines.
