Shredward, that website is totally wrong. It says there Madon died in 1924 when Ziggy took care of him in 1918.

Typical delusions of one who has cracked under the strain.
Ziggy, we can get you help

116 confirmed kills

All of the Bréguets and the Strutter from yesterday, as well as one SPAD from the day before have been confirmed.
The weather was very good for flying today. Virtually clear skies allowing for long range enemy plane spotting. Zygmunt’s flight was ordered to patrol friendly front lines between Sillery and Reims. The mission so far was going without a hitch and the Schwarm was on it’s last circuit before returning home. It was then that Ziggy felt something was not right. He intensified his scan of the sky, but it was only after seeing Flak below the horizon that he realized a fight was already in progress. He watched an Albatros following a Bréguet and soon joined the pursuit. It was easier to corner this beast when working in pairs. He could see Rienau was herding the French machine towards him. Hahn was glad to be in the right spot at the right time. The bomber filled his sights and his Spandaus were already singing. Zygmunt watched the large plane nosedive and was awaiting a spectacular explosion once it’d hit the ground, but the bomber pilot was a skilled flier and managed to take his bus out of the steep dive just in time. The hunt would commence anew. By now more Albatrosen joined the fight and they all took turns trying to take out the bomber. Zygmunt fired one last salvo which crippled the engine. The enemy plane was forced down north of Reims near a troop camp. As soon as the bomber touched down and rolled to a stop it began to burn. Was it an engine fire or did the crew set it alight before the army arrived to claim the prize? In either case, there would be plenty of witnesses. Hahn had his Schwarm form up and return home.

When Hahn and Tybelsky entered the Kasino they found Fuchs already sitting at the usual table, his legs outstretched and his arms behind his head.
“- What took you this long?” He greeted the two older pilots who were settling down at the table.
“- We didn’t know this was a race. Next time we’ll leave the enemy hanging and hurry back home to get here before you.” Tybelsky’s reply made Rudi bitter.
“- That’s exactly what our illustrious Schwarmfürher did.” Fuchs looked at Leutnant Jumpelt sitting across the room and drinking with other pilots. “- We were finishing our patrol when we spotted some enemy planes. They were flying higher than us! But did we engage? No, he took us down towards the ground to avoid the confrontation.” He spat on the floor. “- How are we supposed to win this war if we run away at first sign of enemy?” Rudi appeared to be disgusted.
“- Rudi, look ... to attack the enemy, it takes a good pilot. To know when to engage and when to avoid a fight, it takes a good leader.” Hahn didn’t think Jumpelt was running away and he couldn’t have other pilots think that either. “- Watch and learn. One day, you could be making the decision if the rest of your Schwarm dies or lives to fight another day.”
Fuchs wasn’t convinced.

Escorted 1 RE 8 on recon up by Lens. Spotted and dove 3 Hun Scouts climbing in a turn Great Bounce by our 3 old timers the 2 replacements kind over shot My e/a must have got hit because he stayed level . I kicked rudder and slid in behind. 47 rds barked from my Lewis along with over 100 round from the Vickers. Most of his right top wing was ripped and vapor was pouring out of the motor. Score The Cpt ( Hemmings) got one and I got one. No losses. Put in a claim but the ADJ said no witness and over enemy area then dont bother.

Second flight : Off on Patrol towards Oppy and show the flag.. Flight lead spotted a 2 Seat and it was everybody wing over and pile on. ( the Cpt's wingman got it ) By the time I was winging over the Escort came down, 2 Huns on me so 180 then full power and dove for home. A close one Score 1 2 seat. We lost Taylor a replacement.

Zygmunt and Co. were tasked with eliminating enemy observation balloon south of Reims. The mission was a breeze and no enemy machines were encountered. Scheller got the gasbag and everyone returned to base safe and sound. Hahn was looking forward to a quiet drink in the Kasino.

On Patrol and I spotted 2 E/a lining up on a RE 8 below us and off to the right my Flight was watching the leader not me . I dove alone and circled to get in the 1st hits on the Prat. Jolly good line up and held down the triggers. he twisted and turn ,but my 1st shots had hurt him finally the killing bust from my Vickers as I over shot him and Ker plug he smacked into NML . Confirmed by the RE 8 Ob and the Infantry of C, Company 43rd Battalion, 2nd Lt Infantry. The Maj was happy awarded me the M.C. My flight Leader Cpt Hemmings was not. He raked me over the coals for breaking fomation and generally gave me Bloody E' LL

Liebe Berta,
Thank you for your lovely letter and the picture. You look very lovely in it.
I am writing a quick note while taking advantage of adverse weather which prevents us from flying. My friends and I are soon heading into town to celebrate my first two victories. Yes, I’ve shot down two enemy machines and I’m well on my way to becoming Kanone. Tybelsky and Hahn are taking me to town to properly celebrate. I am curious, excited and a little scared to find out what that means. I hope their intentions are honourable.
Will write to you soon again.
Yours,

Rudi

The rain and freezing winds have grounded Jasta 19 for second day in a row. The claim for the Bréguet from a few days ago has been denied. Apparently Rienau fired the last round that set the bomber on fire.
Ziggy woke up just before noon. Tybelsky and Fuchs were all in his room fast asleep and all three of them smelled of cheap wine. There were stains all over Rudi’s uniform. Was that lipstick on his collar?
“- GET UP YOU LOT!” He kicked Tybelsky in the shin. Fuchs jumped to his feet and fell over. He knocked over an empty bottle he brought with him.
“- Out! Both of you. I need to get ready.”
Tybelsky made some incomprehensible noises, gathered Fuchs and the two men staggered out of the room. Hahn went back to bed.

Rain has subsided for now and the flying conditions improved significantly.
The troops on the ground are preparing for an attack on the enemy positions and HQ has requested Jasta to support the ground forces. They will patrol over the No-Man’s Land near the ruins of Sillery.
It was another ambush. As soon as Ziggy had taken off a flight of SPADs descended upon them. He followed one and shot him down then watched the rest of the battle from below.

YouTube Link

As expected all SPADs began to retreat and the chase was on. They caught up with them over Courcy and Hahn took another SPAD out. When he looked for his next victim he saw one chasing after Leusch. The two machines were evenly matched and the French machine was unable to gain on the Albatros, probably due to battle damage. He immediately dove after them but was not optimistic about catching up to them. It was only by chance he looked up and found another Albatros above him less than a meter.

YouTube Link

He dove immediately and was quickly fired upon by the Poilus in the trenches. The pursuit continued all the way back to Saint-Loup where in the end Hahn was able to catch up. His Spandaus fired only a second after the SPAD opened fire on Leusch. Thankfully the German pilot was able to evade. The same could not be said about the French pilot. With one of the wings shot off he was soon spiralling down to crash near the aerodrome.

YouTube Link

Ziggy could see grateful Leusch giving him a thumbs up sign from the cockpit beside his as they were landing. Zygmunt knew at least this SPAD would be confirmed as his. Unfortunately they would have to repeat the mission tomorrow. The Army insisted on keeping the skies clear before their attack.

The men piled into the Kasino all sweaty and talking loudly about the action that has just taken place above their aerodrome.
“- Life on the base is never dull! Did you see me shoot down those two SPADs? He went like this and I went like that! He was dead meat when I got on his tail. And that second one, he didn’t have far to go after his engine caught on fire.” Rudi was waving his arms to demonstrate the maneuvers.
Tybelsky and Hahn congratulated the young Feldwebel on a job well done. He now had four kills to his name. He was rising quickly through the ranks on the score board.

Carrick, congratulations on your second victory!

Fullofit, I still have to catch up on some of your videos but I'm amazed at the way Ziggy keeps finding more Frenchmen to swot out of the air. Just please be careful about flying too low over enemy territory!

"I was able to dive on its tail and put two long bursts into it."

We put up six patrols on 12 January without anyone seeing an enemy machine. The Huns have become shy. Draper opined that they are regrouping in preparation for a big push in the spring, which we all know must come now that the filthy Russians have chucked it in and before the Americans Han show up in meaningful numbers. We should enjoy the peaceful days while we have them.

We had a visit overnight from a good fellow from 65 Squadron, a man named King. His machine threw a cylinder while he was on patrol well to the north of his normal territory and he put down for repairs with us. We invited him for a proper naval dinner and young Stephane taught him some fine new words. In exchange, King introduced a new ritual to the mess. Glass in hand, he approached Johns singing the children’s song, “Do You Know the Muffin Man?” Johns had not been introduced to said baker so they all had to had to take a drink and then link arms and the two of them sang the refrain to Munday, who also caused the others to take a drink. Now the three of them linked arms and continued the song. Before long, fifteen unsteady pilots were knocking over tables trying to get to the remaining fellow who had not met the muffin man. This is the spirit that will win the war.

I finally had a crack at a Hun on 13 January. I led a patrol north towards Ypres, where we were dived upon by a large group of Albatri. I focused on staying above the scrum and waited for an opportunity. It came in the form of a dark green Albatros, which had spun out of the fight and headed home. I believe it was making for the aerodrome at Haubourdin. I was able to dive on its tail and put two long bursts into it. The EA spun out of control and did not recover. Compston joined up with me and the two of us ran into a group of three more Albatri. It was a tight scrap for several minutes and at one point I bounced my undercarriage off an enemy machine which I had not seen. My Camel was unharmed and I never did catch sight of the Hun.
The green EA was confirmed by Compston and is my twenty-sixth.

On the following day we were back up to Ypres. It was nearly time to return when Cumming spotted a pair of two seaters up around 14,000 feet. It was a long stalk. To my dismay, the Huns saw us when we were still out of effective range. The closer of the two machines banked and dived. Its observer began firing when I was still 300 yards off. This is normally a sign of a windy gunner, but not this time. I felt a burning pain on my right upper calf. Instantly I broke away and reached down to find a distressing amount of blood running over my boot. I put down at Bailleuil where I had the pleasure of seeing King again. His OC was an odd sort. The fellow came to see them hoist me out of my Camel and took a brief look at my leg, whereupon he announced, “I say, topping luck. Just a scratch. You’ll be back chasing cabin boys in a week, sailor.” As much as the thing hurt, I am afraid he is right. About the scratch, not the cabin boys. They drove me to No.11 CCS, located in an unpronounceable town a little to the north-west of the field. There I was kept until the morning of 18 January 1918, when I was permitted to return to the Squadron but remain subject to daily examinations and am exempt flying duty for another week. I confess I can use the rest.

Raine, sometimes flying low can’t be avoided. Especially when the enemy is running away that way. To be honest I don’t look for them, the enemy finds me.
About those cabin boys ... did King talk to his OC about Stephane? Oi, another hole in poor ol’ George. Better stay away from those two-seaters. Those scouts are much safer.
Congrats on the latest kill. 26!

Only the SPAD witnessed by Leusch could be confirmed. The other two not so much.
It was a repeat of yesterday’s mission - ground force support near Sillery. Hopefully this time they’ll be able to complete the assignment.
Zygmunt’s Jasta came as close to the Front as Guignicourt. No one knows how it happened. They were flying in a formation one moment and the next Ziggy was being fired on from above by a screaming SPAD. He took this offence personally and chased after the attacker despite two other Albatrosen already on his tail. That SPAD had to be his! Hahn could almost hear the enemy pilot laughing at his feeble attempts to get on his tail. It took some time and the French pilot nearly got bored of evading, but eventually a lucky shot damaged the controls of the cocky pilot’s plane and Zygmunt watched with glee as his adversary struggled all the way down to keep his plane level. In the end his own plane failed him.
The second SPAD went down much quicker. After a few rounds the enemy was falling out of control to crash beside his flight mate.

Zygmunt was bringing his Schwarm back home after another failed attempt at supporting ground forces from the air. His mission wasn’t over yet. There were three more enemy planes waiting for them circling the airfield. Hahn didn’t waste time and attacked head on. His target was less than lucky. Ziggy found a way to stay on his tail and pulverize the SPAD. He soon saw the enemy plane diving for the deck. It looked like he would get away at the very last moment, but Mallman, who followed, made sure the dive would be the Frenchman’s last one.

As the two men entered the Kasino they were enjoying a good laugh after Tybelsky made a rude joke about the Kaiser. They found Fuchs sitting at the table with three untouched drinks in front of him. He was staring blankly at a point on the tabletop and he looked pale.
“- What’s happened?” Tybelsky knew right away something was wrong. “- Spill!”
Fuchs looked at him, but didn’t seem to recognize his friend’s face. His hands were shaking.
Tybelsky put his hand on Rudi’s shoulder and looked the young man straight in the eyes. Fuchs focused on the face and seemed to come out of his daze.
“- We were over No-Man’s Land near Reims. We had the new guy with us, Feldwebel Brauch. He was bringing up the rear. Normally I would have his place in formation. I heard gunfire in the back. He was gone, shot to bits.” Fuchs took a sip of his drink. “- I saw his shot up plane fly past. He was dead in the cockpit but his face seemed to look at me as if it were my fault. Everything happened too fast. His stricken Albatros hit another plane in the formation and the two tumbled down towards the mud. They were both lost.” He swallowed hard. “- They were shot down by our own airplanes. They mistook us for enemy formation.” Fuchs fell silent.
“- This is what’s called the fog of war m’boy! It’s unfortunate.” Tybelsky tried to cheer up his young friend. “- The French have a saying for situations like this: C’est la guerre! Or some nonsense like that. Now, let us help you with those drinks.” They picked up the drinks. “- To the fallen warriors, may they never be forgotten!”

One of the SPADs from yesterday has been confirmed.
The Army were adamant about sweeping the skies near Sillery. They’ve reported a flight of enemy planes wreaking havoc on the ground troops in the area.
A silver Strutter dropped out of the sky and split up the formation when they arrived above the ruins of the city they were to patrol over. Zygmunt got off a few shots at him but had to disengage. A Nieuport was coming down to protect the Strutter and Hahn was in the middle. They circled each other, but the French pilot was inexperienced and Zygmunt was able to catch him in a dive. He then pumped the sesquiplane full of lead and relented only after one of his Spandaus jammed. He could see the enemy pilot had been hit, his arm was hanging limply outside of the cockpit. Ziggy wondered for a second what the other pilot was doing with his arm outside of the cockpit when he was killed. He never had the time to come up with a reasonable answer. Two more silver scouts flying below caught his eye. He had one in his crosshairs from the start and only needed to get closer to open fire. When he did, he pummelled it with a few volleys and noted this pilot also stuck his arm out of the cockpit when he was killed. Was it some sort of a French ritual? Was the Frenchman attempting to give Zygmunt a finger before he died? The German ace might never find out. He soon noticed the other Nieuport battling with one of Ziggy’s wingmen. He was there in an instant attempting to engage while the other two planes were chasing each other in circles. Simply barging in didn’t work. He always ended up in the wrong spot. He tried something else. Hahn pulled up above the two and dove on the Nieuport. The extra speed gave him the advantage he needed and soon the French scout was falling down to the ground on fire. They were still not done. There was another pair engaged in combat just a bit further away and above. Zygmunt was soon there and the Albatros dove straight down and toward him. His wingman knew the Jastaführer would come to his aid. The Franzose also noticed this and did all in his power to avoid being jumped by Ziggy. He was successful by staying under Hahn’s Albatros and banking in opposite direction to that of the German pilot. There was nothing but to pursue. Zygmunt leaned into the gunsight and took some long range shots at the enemy. It worked and he was soon taking deflection shots at a banking Nieuport rather than one retreating. It didn’t take long for the French machine to be riddled with bullets and crashing into the mud below. It was the last of them. The Army should be pleased with Jasta 19’s work today.

Fuchs was waiting for Hahn and Tybelsky in the Kasino with his feet propped up on another chair. With a drink in his hand he greeted his friends:
“- Meine Herren, did you enjoy yourselves up there in the air today?”
“- Why yes, very much. Thanks for asking. I take it you want to tell us something?” Tybelsky greeted the young Feldwebel by shooing away his feet off the chair and sitting on it after thoroughly wiping it clean with his handkerchief.
“- While you were taking a tour of the Front, us here had to step in and clean up the space a bit for your return. You see, those SPADs keep coming here looking for something. We had to go up and explain to them they weren’t welcome. I shot one down! Now I have to wait for the confirmation - those dirty sons of Schwein, the Flak battery gunners are claiming my SPAD as theirs. Can they do that?” Fuchs was not amused.
“- Oh yes, they are quite good at that. In fact, they’re better at claiming planes than shooting them down.”

Carrick, these boys didn't scan the sky for enemy machines even once. They must be all straight out of flight school!

One of the Nieuports has been confirmed.
Today they were ordered to intercept enemy planes heading for the troop camp south of Marchais in the Sissone Forest.
As Ziggy was lifting off from the aerodrome at Saint-Loup he thought to himself that at least this time his Schwarm won’t get jumped during takeoff. Two Ketten of Albatrosen flying overhead ensured of that. Was he wrong? Yes, he was! All he needed to do was look left to see two flights of SPADs bearing down on him. It looked like a hornet nest had been kicked and he was flying right into it.
Zygmunt fired on one and in turn was fired on as well. It didn’t take long for him to latch on to a SPAD which began the annoying maneuver of bobbing up and down to throw of his attacker’s aim. It didn’t work too well and Hahn watched with satisfaction as the Franzose smashed into the ground close to the edge of the aerodrome. He quickly picked out another SPAD from a pair that was chasing an Albatros. He soon was witnessing it crash in nearly the exact same spot as the first scout had. The two craters marked the east edge of the airfield. By now the fight had spread out across the entire area, but there was one pair that was fighting it out nearby. Ziggy followed. As soon as the Frenchman realized he was being tag-teamed, he made a beeline for the frontlines. Zygmunt knew he’d never catch him, but that was fine with him. He soon noticed another SPAD chase another Albatros. As luck would have it, Hahn’s aeroplane had the altitude advantage and Ziggy quickly spent it to to close the distance. He aimed and fired, and fired and fired. The SPAD took incredible amount of punishment before one of the rounds found the pilot and sent the entire plane down into oblivion at the edge of a farmer’s field.

Zygmunt was now returning to base and was nearly there when he spotted two more of the devils overflying his aerodrome. He went after them and, in time, closed to a striking distance of the trailing ship. His second salvo caught the Frenchman’s attention, who immediately began wild maneuvers to throw off his assailant. Zygmunt continued to pour round after round into the French biplane. It was only after the pilot was hit that the enemy plane went down. Were it not for the meat, the wood and canvas would continue to fly. This was the last one of the marauders. Hahn brought his machine back to base quickly after.

“- What happened to you today, meine Herren?” Rudi was wiping sweat of his brow with the end of his scarf. “- We could have used your help battling those pesky SPADs at the intercept point.” The young pilot was sitting down and taking off his flight jacket.
“- We’ve had our hands full with some of our own pesky SPADs, right here at home.” Tybelsky pushed a drink in Fuchs’ direction.
“- Danke!” Rudi picked up his glass and took a large gulp. “- Looks like the enemy is trying to keep you Gentlemen here at home. If you’re tied up here, you can’t do any damage anywhere else.” He took another swallow. “- But fear not. We were able to keep the Franzosen at bay. I was lucky to take two of them out, thank you very much. Along with the claim from yesterday that’s just been confirmed, that makes seven.”
“- Well done, Feldwebel Fuchs! Congratulations!” Hahn was proud of the young pilot. “- I wouldn’t be surprised there was a medal coming your way soon. Drinks are on me! Prost!”

By Jove, I felt like a footballer banged a round and bruised up. The Huns jumped us ( at least 6 e/a maybe 8 } on a recon Escort Mission. They were higher than our 5 a/c flight and circled down diving while one made the end around. Bloody awful, we lost 2 a/c for 0 e/a. I was chased by some chap that had a High performance engine. The chap chumped me good. Looped spun, turned zoom he did it al while staying 200 yds or so and firing. Even in a dive at full military Power , I couldnt get away . Luckily I was headed deeper to our side. and the Archie was blasting away, He stated swinging wide gaping the distances then turned back. I landed at a Friendly AF for Fuel and a patch job on 27 holes in my kite plus loose flying wires and getting directions home. War is E'LL.

One of the SPADs has been confirmed.
Ziggy’s flight was to patrol behind friendly front lines over St-Quentin-le-Petit aerodrome, but the French were at it again, denying Zygmunt and his Schwarm the ability to complete their mission. Frankly, it was wearing thin on the German ace. One of the attacking SPADs came from above and smashed into the ground, He was too hungry. Ziggy quickly selected his first victim and sent him to hell before the poor devil could say “merde”. It was then he realized it was the Indian Head Squadron. The Amerikaners were getting too bold and needed to be put back in their place. Another SPAD went down.

This was not enough. Zygmunt wanted to show that these hit-and-run tactics will not work. They followed. The entire Schwarm was chasing after the remaining SPADs all the way back to Courcy across the lines. The Lafayette Escadrille pilots were picked off and shot down to a man over their own aerodrome. Hahn, himself eliminated one of the Schweinehunde. None of the enemy planes were allowed to land. Zygmunt hoped this lesson would leave a lasting impression on the enemy.

“- How’s our newest Offizzierstellvertreter doing this fine day?” Tybelsky was addressing Fuchs while sitting down at the Kasino table holding drinks in each hand. Hahn followed with another two drinks in his hands.
Each man held on to one of the glasses and offered the other to Rudi.
“- Meine Herren, welcome and thank you. I am parched and will gladly accept your offer of a free drink. As to the quality of the day, I am excited to say that I’ve never had one like this. What, with the promotion and the new aerolane, who could ask for more?”
“- You just wait till we take you back to that bordello again! You’ll be asking for more in no time.” Tybelsky assured the young pilot.
“- About that ...” Fuchs was about to say something when Ziggy quickly changed the subject.
“- Tell us Rudi, how do you like your new D.Va!”
“- Ahhh, it’s great! I’m sure I’ll be able to run rings around those SPADs in it. I just need to test it out on them first.”
“- No luck today?” Tybelsky was surprised.
“- Nein, no luck. We were assigned to defence duty over Annelles. The weather was just wunderbar. The skies were crystal clear so we would be able to spot enemy planes approaching from miles away. That’s probably why none have come anywhere near us.” Rudi made a sad face.
“- We circled above the airfield for half an hour and then returned home. It’s like someone swiped all the bandits from the sky.”
“- Cheer up Rudi, you’ll get your chance.” Tybelsky was grinning knowing well what has happened to the enemy planes.
