What are some of the best war melee combat scenes you've seen?
My top 3
"300" - Historical inaccuracies aside, I think this is an amazingly well done battle scene.
"Gladiator" - What a fantastic way to open a film.
"Glory" - It's starts off ranged but turns melee rather quickly!

“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
The cool thing about "300" was how they did the long "One Shot Take" fight scene (at the end of clip above) where they used a loooong stage and moved left to right....
I hate 300 because of how it established the jumping sword swing that has been copied so much since then. The more goofy graphic style has even gotten into serious history programs.
Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.
"GLORY" is definitely among the very best. Unfortunately the movie was severely overshadowed by "TITANIC", which garnered all the attention at the time.

???
Glory came out in 1989. Titanic came out in 1997.

Those are good scenes Panzer. I still have yet to watch 300 all the way through.
Excalibur to me is one of those movies that makes combat truly look painful and ugly. I still have it imprinted on my mind from seeing this as a kid all the heavy armor slicked with mud and blood and guys clanking around being brutal. Speaking of armor this movie seems to capture it right. Its heavy and serves a purpose and for a short spurt men can fight but then there are periods of burnout where they lumber around slowly having expended a lot of energy. Just the sounds though of warriors inflicting wounds and contending with one another on a battlefield is captured in such a way in this movie that is all to often not matched.

Outstanding pick Coot!!! "Excalibur" is one of my absolute favorite films of all time for many reasons.

Most of the modern fight movies do not have very good fight scenes. I think it is mostly due to the fact that they cut at each hit vs actually filming people fighting. Some of the older movies has some really good fight scenes though.

In Saving Private Ryan I think the man to man combat between the German and Mellish is one of the best I’ve seen.

"For I know the plans that I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Matthew 5:11
Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, because “the Lord is compassionate and merciful. James 5:11
Spot on Cy when Tom cruise and the usless grunts first encounter the Samari is great in fact a lot of great fights in the movie and I don't worry about historical accuracy they are entertainment not documentaries
Not a "film", but rather a series... Sparticus, War of the Damned, had some entertaining melees. A lot of the jumping sword work that oldgrognard understandably dislikes, but I think it is easier to suspend disbelief when it is unconventional combatants who were trained as gladiators... they were unlikely to be constrained to limited catalog of conventional moves.
Yeah Rob Roy is a good one, nasty and brutal. That clip you linked of the longsword duel Lieste is outstanding. I dislike the music choice and some of the filming tricks but that has to be some of the best, realistic looking and impactful sword fighting that I've seen. That kind of thing needs to be in the movies. I think those guys captured what a real, trained and seasoned sword fighter would have looked and fought like.
