I've never read the book but I have seen the 1976 film adaptation a couple of times and I was just thinking recently that the basic premise really makes no logical sense.

So we have Earth set in some distant unspecified future where natural resources have become so scarce that humanity decides to just kill people as they turn 30 in order to conserve resources and survive.

Instead of having to create a large and elaborate police force (Sandmen) to track down those individuals who try to run away as they turn 30 and creating some elaborate "Carousel" ceremony to deceive the population into thinking that the participants are simply being renewed/reborn, wouldn't it have been far easier to just medically sterilize the majority of the population? For example, if you sterilize 8 out of every 10 people, that will have a direct immediate effect on how big your population can be.

Anyway, I'm just brainstorming today. biggrin

I'm sure there are lots of flaws in the concept, and I haven't put much thought into it, but it could be that you need to have a high birth rate to ensure you get good candidates for working in society, and you get the best years of their productivity, and then just off them when you're done. You couldn't get that with sterilization.

Edit: Also, people are more expensive to care for and are unproductive when they get older, so you save that cost by killing them at 30.

I regard Jenny Agutter in her 1970s/80s time period as my idealised woman smile I really dig her. An American Werewolf In London was the first 18 rated movie I ever saw in the cinema, I think I was turned at that moment smile

OT, if I were to try and justify the premise, I'd suggest that genetic diversity would still be needed and cutting out 80% of the population each generation would reduce that. The cities weren't that big, there weren't that many cities, if the deserted outside areas are anything to go by.

Also keep in mind they controlled things at both ends. Not only were people vaporized at 30, the newborns were also under state control. People did not know of their parentage, so it can be assumed any babies that would not measure up could be wiped out at any stage of development, without any parental interference. Obviously numbers could easily be manipulated in the same manner.

Farrah wasn't bad but she was a bit too far on the skinny side for me. Her face looked a bit too bony.

Jenny though was "filled out" in all the right places. smile

Logan's vasectomy wouldn't have had the same ring to it. :0)

That Farrow bloke you executed today, are you sure he's dead?
Well I chopped his head off, that usually does the trick.
Yes, don't get clever with me Baldrick. I just thought you might have lopped off a leg or something by mistake.
No, the thing I chopped off had a nose.

Well there was always Walkabout, and to think that was only a year after The Railway Children.

Dang, I thought I was going to have to murder my hard drive in the woods after googling that, a quick bit of maths (1971 - 1952) saved it! eek

yeah it was close I must admit I did check too before I posted it up here, it was a long time ago when I seen the film and I would have been younger than her back then.

biggrin

When my uncle upgraded to VHS he gave me his old Betamax recorder, American warewolf in London was one of the first things I managed to record on it, man some sections of that tape got hammered! Halcyon days!

Yes, yes she was.

I might have to give it another watch, I haven't seen it in a while either, Logan's run too.

I've just been looking at the quotes and having a chuckle!

[still discussing how David can kill himself in order to lift the curse]

Harry Berman: A gun is good.

Judith Browns: You just put the gun to your forehead and pull the trigger.

Gerald Bringsley: If you put it in your mouth, then you'd be sure not to miss.

David: Thank you, you're all so thoughtful.
