Well, arrived, been here a few days and like everything I see :-)

Been staying with my friend, but will be taking out a long term rental near Aubrey this week. Place really is so much more than what I could have imagined. The city, the food, the people......everybody that I've met so far has been so polite and warm, it's awesome. A few have given me some looks because of my London accent, but I just laugh it off. I would love so much to live here. This place seems to suit me in so many ways, I feel privileged to be here.

Will try to do some of the more serious stuff this week; inquiring about work, residency and all. And it seems like there's a couple of air shows on at the end of this month, awesome! Hopefully some shooting next week with my bro. Nice that the Cowboys got a win on my first weekend!

Thanks y'all!

Andrew.

Kindest regards,

AJ

Don’t sweat it FC! When I first moved to Texas back in 1996, I got some funny looks too and I’m an American!
I think I got the looks simply because I don’t have a Southern accent.

Have you bought the cowboy hat and boots yet? winkngrin

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I lived there for three years, my oldest son was born there and, I still have had a great life without ever owning a pointy boot in my life.

You'll know when you need that stuff. I never did. I was just stationed there in the US Army ...ermm Cavalry...as in 3rd Armored Cavalry.

We had Horse Power, not no stinkin horses! biggrin

Probably a lot less maintenance though.

I wonder which war had the last US cavalry charge? I’m guessing the Spanish American War.

I know for a fact my grandfather led a horse artillery CHARGE, as in run the damn bosch over with the caissons and limbered guns, in WWI.

I could contact my cousin maybe who has my granpa's stuff and find out which battle I guess. It's not that important in the big scheme of things, but he got his second award (Palms) of the Croix de Guerre for it...and never told me even a tiny bit about what a hero he was.

You're one up on Europeans in that you can grasp the scale of the USA.

My uncle from West Germany came for a summer and for some reason thought he could drive from northern Alabama to Miami and then to Vegas in a couple days. smile

Bataan peninsula in the Philippines during WW2.

He and the rest of his 27-man platoon (G Troop of 26th US Cavalry), their heads low over their horses' necks and firing their Colt 1911 pistols (the US Cavalry had hung up its traditional sabres a decade earlier), galloped headlong into a far larger force of Japanese infantrymen in the village of Morong on the Bataan peninsula of the Philippines.

Not as dramatic as that but some Scottish relatives thought a day trip to Toronto would be nice. That is a 9-10 hour round trip from Ottawa back then.

So, as a bit of an update, I will be leaving on 10/4. But not because I want to.......

I love this place, and I want my future to be here. This initial trip was to 'test the waters' so to speak, and I love it. I entered the United States on a special visa called an ESTA. This is valid for three months, however it's not legal for me to seek work in this time. I have a bit stashed in the bank, so my master plan is this:

I will (regrettably) leave on the fourth of the new month. One the way through, I will be picking up the little lady, and we will get married in Perth (there are all kinds of issues doing this in Indonesia). Once that is done, I will go to the embassy and apply for a H1B visa, and I believe there is also another (EB3?). Anyways, I now have my U.S cell and number. Today I was called up and offered a years contract, but unfortunately the company in question will not sponsor people. However the recruiter told me that he has other companies that will. As soon as I get a job and sponsorship, me and Martina will return on the first flight. :-)

I have a degree of sadness about leaving, but I'll be back. I'll do a short contract in Australia just to recoup a bit more money prior to our return.

America really is the land of the free. I feel privileged that I have been allowed to come to this great country. And I will feel honored if at some time in future I can return here to live. Had an absolute blast (no pun intended) at the Frisco shooting club. Hope and pray that in future I can become a productive member of society.

Thanks y'all!

Andrew.

Kindest regards,

AJ

Sounds like you're just the sort of immigrant we love to have. Come back soon, to stay!

Indeed. The kind of immigrant that we want and need. Glad you enjoyed the visit and experience.

Good luck on your marriage and getting arrangements for work sponsorship and Visa worked out.

Dun got me my cowboy hat and shirt!

Even though I plan to return, next Thursday will be a sad day for me. Hopefully can get in some more shooting before I leave.

Kindest regards,

AJ
