Can they not be shot down? I'm in RFC 54. It's Jan. 6, 1917. We're on an escort mission. We cross into German territory and see a group of Albatros DII and DI. I see Richthofen in a DI and go after him. As we're fighting, we're moving deeper into German territory. I decide to turn around and rejoin my flight. Once we get back to our airfield and end the mission, it shows I fired 157 rounds and hit him 66 times. He never went down. Can we not shoot these guys down?

You can shoot them down, but they will not die until their scheduled date. I do not use this mod because if you fly with a unit like Jasta 11, loaded with historical aces, no one dies and no one actually scores. I’ve gone out in a flight of three HAs and me. Balloon busting. All three were shot down. I saw them crash. But they were all back alive the next flight.

I actually use the mod to limit the number of HAs to 100 per country. You watch your comrades score and grow. And you watch them die.

I dislike flying with a bunch of immortals.

But that’s just me.

What mod does that? Also, how many hits to bring down an Alb? I know they're made of plywood, but dang, 66 hits?

Yeah, the immortal HA thing is my only big complaint with WOFF. In my 103rd USAS Campaign I've seen Gorman Larner and George Furlow "die" at least 3 times each...kills the otherwise fantastic immersion a little bit!

otoh, if one only encountered Enemy Aircraft a couple of times a week, and went weeks without a claim, as was the case in the real war, you would soon put the disc on the shelf, out of boredom. In 1917, the odds of seeing the great man himself were almost zilch.
If you will recall RB days, it didn’t take long before the opposition was all no name rookies, because the great historical aces had all gone West.

I personally enjoy encountering them over and over. It is not realistic but then again, my shooting them down before their time is also not realistic.

I get all the HA stuff. And that’s why I limit them to 100 by mod. If you fly with Jasta 11, where almost everyone in an HA, for me, it’s inspiring in flight, but kills another important element of squadron life, and death! I tried Aris’s mod and flew in a French unit in which almost everyone was an HA. What my mates actually did in the air made little difference. They’d score kills that didn’t count, and deaths from which they resurrected.

The poorly named Aces Redux 200 and 100. I’m currently in Jasta 11 with only three HAs. Without the mod, there’d be a slew of HAs. With Aris’s mod there be even more.

Just to bring up a point and some backstory to the amount of 'aces' in the game...

When the original groundwork was being laid out for the game over 10 years ago, Shred realized with the way WM and Pol were able to manipulate the datafiles, Shred was able to add in hundreds of 'aces' to the game. Now this was something no one had ever been able to accomplish until he did it on OFF. From a purely historical point of view, pilots that were not even aces were flying again in our version of The Great War.

Not every single ace is an ace in our skies .. some are simply pilots to fill roster slots. Why was this done you may ask... to create the hundreds of skins you see in the game. All of this info was given to the skinners that, as you can imagine, were drooling over the chance to really fill the air with personal markings of individual PILOTS... not just aces. A monumental task, and honestly.. very historic from a WWI simulation point of view... this had NEVER been done before. So.. we did it.

That's why you see so many pilots on so many of the rosters of your squadrons... historic or not. We realized they would not die until the day of their deaths... but we didn't care. For all of us on the OBD Team, it was a chance to make history and we took advantage of it. We finally could re-create a very personal and definitive rendition of WWI air combat. Sure... you run into the same ace even though you shot him down.. but many of the aces WERE shot down and did actually live.

I hope that sheds a little light on why there are so many hard coded names in the game.

Just to make things clear, my mod doesn't create additional aces for the sim. It just adds biographies, photos and historical victories to the already existing ones. For me, the opportunity to find HAs, with their historical skins, shoot them down (even if they don't really die that day) is a big factor for immersion and I fully enjoy it. If HAs were not inmortal before their scheduled date of death we probably we wouldn't have a single one alive by the start of 1918. As to the fact that they don't actually score kills, well, they will, as they did historically, that's even better to me.

Yessir. A huge majority of the HA’s be dead in a week if the game system wasn’t as is.
Still have to try a “no-Aces” campaign some time. Be curious how long it would take for a complete squadron turn over. Not long I bet. Tough war.

More history the better. There are plenty of ways (and mods) to suite everyone’s taste. Great game.

For me, a big part of the motivation for the thousands of historical pilots was the opportunity to bring Everyman out of the shadows. Yes, the aristocracy was well represented in the Air Services of Great Britain, France, and Deutschland, as was the Ivy League in the USAS. But the War was fought by ordinary citizens from Toowoomba and Morden Manitoba and Leeds and Essen; by your Great Uncle and my Grandfather. And this is our chance to tell their story.
Aris has done much to fill in the gaps, and I am working away to colour the rest of that canvas

After I was killed. I rejoined RFC 54 using Aces Redux 100. There are no HA's in 54 now. Not far from us is Jasta 2. Only Richthofen, Voss, Muller, and Bohme are there. Only 1 ace in Jasta 1. 1 in Jasta 5. None in Jasta 6. 1 in Jasta 11. None in Jasta 20. It's strange not seeing as many aces, but I think I like it better than before.
