Well, one scene anyway...

Gaze Into the Eyes of a High Definition Garak in the Deep Space Nine Documentary

Wish they would give the entire series this treatment

I've never bothered watching Deep Space 9. As another series based on a space station, how does it compare with Babylon 5?

DS9 is the best Star Trek, period.

Having just watched B5 through I would rank them very closely together, hard to say which is best overall.

B5 had the better story and better characters IMO, DS9 looks better (much bigger budget per episode, massive improvements in CGI). But, as F4U just wrote, they both rank pretty high up there. The Expanse and the new BSG are of course another dramatic step up in visual quality, and I simply like grungy tech environments better than the "Apple style" of the Star Trek universe.

+1

As for DS9 and B5, there are so many urban legends out there concerning who ripped off who creatively since it is quite interesting that two shows with very similar premises started airing on tv at roughly the same time.

DS9 gave the Trek universe three dimensions, and covered allot more grown up themes and character growth than TNG or VOY did.

The first three seasons have a lot of filler episodes (some of which are quite good), and a lot more "main" characters got air time than on the ship-based shows.
Espesially the Garak and Bashir interactions are some of the best.

I enjoyed DS9 for showing that (a) the Federation was made up of real people, not just Rodenberry's futuristic fantasy men and women, and (b) showing some of the downsides of the "perfect" Federation society and the reasonable negative reactions of some other civilizations to the Federation's near-perfection self-perception.

I always thought that Sisko was more like Kirk than any of the other captains - tough and willing to do what had to be done, but still caring and concerned about doing what's right. I also think it is one of the few series that wrapped things up well at the end.

HD Nana Visitor and Terry Farrell where do I sign up? It's a great series and will say that the series finale is great and kind of bleak for a ST series.

Yeah, both B5 and DS9 have their strengths and weaknesses.

DS9 was more "traditional trek", as in mostly unconnected stories for the first 2-3 seasons. There was some red threads through them and I felt DS9 actually had character growth throughout that period (unlike TNG and such). Then it hit the ground running and delivered 4 great seasons with a strong overreaching arc.

B5 was the same for a season and a half, and the last season (5) was weak compared to the rest. But the main arc for B5 was also extremely strong, with some amazing characters as well.

I would have loved to see either series remastered in HD - but with the master tapes of B5 long gone, along with the rendering originals it is a pipedream. a big F U to Warner Bros for that frown

I still find it to be a very interesting coincidence how both B5 and DS9 debuted on TV very close to each other. Someone was stealing from someone in Hollywood.

the most diehard B5 fans claims Paramount stole the idea from JMS. He first went to them with the idea as the series as a Star Trek show, and got turned down.

"A little over two years ago, I launched the Deep Space Nine and Voyager Upscale Project (DS9VUP). In the eight months since my last update I have shattered my previous quality records and discovered a method for converting Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager that produces far better final output than I believed was possible. It is possible to restore Deep Space Nine and Voyager to 720p HD-equivalent quality. I have done so. It’s time to start seriously asking why Paramount apparently can’t afford to hire a couple of interns to fix the current version of the show.

This is a long article and it covers a lot of ground. It also contains a fair number of video clips and images. The slideshow below should help you decide up-front if you want to spend some time here or not. Each one of the slides in the slideshow below is a 2560×1920 frame from an episode I’ve restored. Each slide will open full-size in a new window if clicked on. Ctrl-click if you want to stay focused on ET while opening a slide in the background."

Money, and I think Paramount hates the old Treks. When they came out with the DS9 Documentary What We Left Behind they showed off a couple redone scenes and said if people liked it, they'd consider doing the whole series. That was a few years ago now though.

Those clips look great.

Here's the deal. ST: TNG got the whole bluray/high def treatment and apparently the sales fell short of expectations so that project ended there and hence why it's not happening with either DS9 or Voyager.

This is not surprising when you consider that the overall sales for physical media have plummeted over the past several years.

TNG was expensive to upgrade with then current tech, apparently it is much cheaper/ simpler/ easier to do now so the math should change.

Yes that makes sense to me. I'm just so glad that Paramount did the remastering for ST: TOS. I have the remastered bluray sets for all three seasons and those episodes really look fantastic and the added CGI effects were done very well.

Someone needs to find out if Musk likes the old Star Treks . . .
