Hey all,

Been lurking here a while, playing WOFF:UE (where has this gem been hiding? I only found it a couple weeks ago!) and thought I'd come out of stealth mode and say hiya. smile

I played the original Red Baron (Dynamix, 1990 or so) until I wore it out and have never found anything like it (until now). smile Thinking about getting my feet wet in the DiD Centenary campaign. I'm a little confused on the dates though. One is the current date but 100 years ago, yeah? The other is what, like 100 years and 4 months ago? Help me out on that one? Thinking of joining in as an American, since it's 1918 after all and I'm kinda late to the party. wink Any pointers on how to get started would be great. smile

Anyway, thanks to the devs for such a great game, and thanks to all of you for being friendly and inviting - you're the only reason I decided to say hi. smile

Witt,

Welcome to the unfriendly skies. I'm delighted you found this time machine and are joining us. I think you'll find the forum a wonderfully friendly place with so many people ready to help. The DiD campaign has two campaigns, in fact. One is this date 100 years ago. The other, the Intrepid Flyers campaign, started somewhat earlier. Right now, 28 August 2018 is 30 April 1918. The calendar was set up so that the day of the week is the same in 2018 and 1918. The easiest way to keep track is to make a calendar in Excel, enter 28 August 2018 on one row and 30 April 1918 on the next row, and drag the entries to stretch into the next few months.

Or PM me your email address and I'll send you my calendar.

Thanks for the friendly reply, Raine. Yeah, looks like a great friendly bunch here. I suspect we're all a little older than the average computer gamer and (theoretically) with age comes wisdom and a little mellowing. wink

Quick question about DiD Cent:

If I join the Americans in April(ish) 1918, I don't have access to any two-seaters so I can't start in one; also, the original rules don't list any airfield to transfer from for an American start. Should I just make it up as I go along and jump into the war? I don't care about points and ranking and stuff - just wanna play through a campaign with youse guys and it seems the Hat in the Ring timing couldn't be better. smile

Should I just, you know, start, and go from there? (I'm not sure I understand the point of the two-seater start and the transfer, etc).

Thanks again for the welcome!

Witt

PS - Raine: I PM'd you my email; would love your calendar.

Witt,

Yeah, a lot of us are getting on. I'll send the file to you later this morning.

I think it would be fine at this stage to simply jump in on single seater. Have some fun!

for just plain flying fun, testing a particular plane, learning an area, or just a morning flip, go to Quick Combat (QC), and have at it. For a realistic career path, many real pilots, esp. early ones, began in two seaters.

all this is, of course, after buying a few rounds......

I haven't flown a US campaign yet. What happens if you select the option to go through training before posting to the front in a US campaign?

Lofty: Yeah, I've done that a number of times, but for the DiD Centenary campaign, I can't start in a two-seater. I guess I can do a quick mission in a two-seater, but it wouldn't be with the same American pilot for DiD. Hm...

Raine: I'll take a look at the training prior to starting a campaign. Maybe that'll do the trick.

Hi Witt and we come to the fray!

Don't be too concerned about having the same pilot for the two seater portion or the training. There is a certain amount of freedom to gather the necessary preliminary training/two seater experience. Just assign a different pilot, do the duty and report it in your DiD reporting. We have all had to fudge a few things since pilot transfer options are limited sometimes depending on the country you choose to fly for.

Running Windows 10 Pro on a homemade AMD 8350 eight-core with 8gb RAM and a GTX 950. Just keyboard, mouse, and Thrustmaster joystick. It makes it kinda tough to look around (especially in the Nieuport 28 I'm currently campaigning in) so I'm thinking about Track IR (or the freeware version with a webcam).

Any input Track IR or whatever that other one is called? Should I invest? smile

I purchased TrackIr5 about yr ago. I bought the combo that included the track pro clip and hat clip. Pro and cons for both check online.

For years i used JS hats for views. It took some getting used to TrackIr but now I really enjoy using it while flying to and from target areas, sight seeing etc . Flying and viewing the scene is more natural using it. For me, there was and still is a learning curve. For example , when things get crazy I still fall back on padlocks while dogfighting. Most sims (and many other games) including WOFFUE are optimized for it.

Will you fly better with it? - Maybe but you probably will enjoy your sim more. Its expensive but I would definitely purchase again.

.

I'm late to this soirée, but welcome to the WOFF skies Witt, and to these forums. You're in for many, many enjoyable hours of flying, fighting, and dying, (virtually). Also, though this may have already been mentioned, new lads buy the drinks!

Missed this post initially - welcome to club newbie! I've been thoroughly enjoying your DiD Challenge contributions.

Coincidentally, I bought the last round - next one's on you apparently wink

Real life has also had me incredibly busy. Welcome to the boards Witt! Hope you are getting on well with WOFF:UE. When you have a moment, we'd all be delighted to hear what part of the war you are currently immersed in. Best of luck up in the unfriendly skies!
