I swear, we can't win weather wise lately, especially at this airport. The last 3 air shows here, all at different dates throughout the summer have brought the worst shooting conditions, HOT, HAZY and HUMID...
Friday's media day was the only "decent" day and the base layout makes it challenging because you start off at shooting into the sun and it only moves to your right, never behind you.
Prowlers of the Pacific. SBD Dauntless, a B5N Kate, F4U Corsair and the Avenger.
The only US Military Jet Demo were the Thunderbirds
It's time to buzz the tower...
I rented the Tamron 150-600 for this show because the RW is a good distance out. The problem though is that it turns opposite of my Sigma 50-500, so when the high speed pass was coming when I went to zoom out, it zoomed in and almost lost the pass. It happened a few times, that alone would prevent me from buying the Tamron. I'll go for the Sigma 150-600 even with the extra weight.

[Re: Top Gun]
some how this show always gets a great static display, that was almost the highlight for me.
C-2 Greyhound & E-2 Hawkeye from NAS Norfolk
F-35 Lightning from Eglin
F-15E Strike Eagle from Seymour Johnson
AH-64 Longbow from Fort Drum, the gunner pointed his gun at us while we were taking pics. lol
2 F-16's from Shaw AFB
2 F-16's from Vermont ANG, love when units send their CAG/Wing jets
V-22 Osprey from VMMT-204 MCAS New River
I was pissed they flew the BUFF in on Thursday...
Then 3 A-10's from ID after they had us leave saying all the static was in... This one has a lightning bolt with it's dropping markings. In talking to the pilot, he was struck by lightning while over seas.
Great shots, as always! Couldn't get my little guy to go. I think he was still tired from the Quonset Point show! Would love to have seen the Spit, the Helldiver, and the Kate (a reproduction?). I've never seen an Osprey static or in flight. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Doc, the Kate is a replica, I haven't seen that one in a long time.
Thunderbirds will be at Quonsett next June, 29-30th. Hoping for better weather then.
The osprey was cool, Westover had a demo a back in 2012, but it was so hot and hazy then too that shots just sucked. I've been lucky to have some Osprey's at my local base a few times recently, so I've seen them quite a bit. I remember RI has one years ago as well.

Funny you should mention that.
I'd read how young Ensigns in WWII were intimidated by Corsairs when introduced to the aircraft and part of the training was getting them over it. I thought that was weird and strange at the time - how could one be intimidated by an aircraft?
Then I saw my first one at the air museum in Seattle.
Heck yeah, it's downright scary when one walks up to it. Each prop blade is eight feet long, behind a huge round engine! And the gull wings....it looks like it's ready to strike.

Believe it or not, the "Kates" are half Texans, and half BT-13's. Most of the fuse, aft of the canopy is from the BT-13! And I find the Corsair intimidating, also. When I've stood next to one it didn't make me think, "Boy, I'd like to fly that!" like the Spitfire does. Unlike the Spit which seems to beckon like a beautiful women, the F4U is like some beeotch who is daring you to even speak to her!

Nice shots TG. Buzzing the tower looks good, how close was he\she?
Thanks, he was probably 500 feet away from the tower? The crowd line followed the far end of the black pavement and then cut behind the tower. I'm pretty sure he cut in around the taxi way which is still far enough from the crowd line.
