I've been looking for my DVD of IL-2 1946 so I can practice some carrier landings (never got proficient trying to land that Corsair), but ever since my wife cleaned out the mancave for me it's been missing in action...

Available on Steam very cheap. In fact I bought it on sale last week for about $3.

Good Old Games is another option if you don't already have Steam. Both Steam and GoG typically sell it for around $9.99 although I have seen it on sale as cheap as 99 cents at GoG.

IL-2 was the end of flight simming for me. It's the last one I spent more than just a few measly hours playing.

By IL-2:1946, it had a great variety of things to fly, but the downfall of the sim (and the genre as a whole) was that it never quite brought the old fun factor that the sims of the late 1980's and early 1990's had. If you were an online only player, it must have been great, but for singleplayer pilots like me, it was quite lacking. Maybe that was more me getting old and jaded than the games themselves, but the last flight sim I was truly obsessed with was 1994's F-14 Fleet Defender. Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe was my previous obsession and is still my all time favorite flight sim.

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

I believe it's a combination of both factors. The flight sims themselves having less built-in immersion and flight simmers getting older and having the "been there, done that" attitude.

Of course,I think the absolute biggest factor is that the genre simply failed to attract a new generation of flight simmers. Anything that fails to attract a new generation of customers will eventually die out.

Hyperlobby is still around, although not nearly as popular as its heyday or even just three or four years ago. Plus there are some squadrons still flying regularly.
