First off my latest story mission. I wasn't getting clobbered, I just didn't eliminate the targets in time. Got it the second time around no problem. Damned slow Assault mechs..

So back to a few random missions and gear hunting. I got lucky and saw my first King Crab and beat him into submission with my LRM cloud and salvaged all three parts. That was a four pumpkin mission I think, kill the spy and he had the Crab. Then I did another 4 1/2 pumpkin/skull mission and got some great +++ items and weapons.

So I was feeling cocky and took on a 5 skuller convoy mission. eekeekeekeekeek

Took me FIVE freakin tries to get it done and, it was the first one ever where I had to run to the extraction zone, tail between my legs instead of killing all the enemies. I just barely made it there the last try. Murder!! Elite everything, at one time I had 2 King Crabs, an Atlas and, a Banshee show up as the SECOND wave of reinforcements against my extremely beat up mechs. Stuff was flying off my mechs like they were tin men in a tornado. when I saw the second Darius reinforcements message I figured it was a bug...NOPE! nope

So it was a 3 hvy and assault mech escort, 3 mondo KillMe demolishers and PPC death wagons in the escort also and, the 4 main heavy armed and Armored vehicles in the main convoy. Then; once I killed the second convoy vehicle, the reinforcements start showing up, right between me and the extraction zone. That bad one it was EIGHT more Assault and Heavy mechs, all Elite and vicious!

I gave up last night and got it the first try today. I hate cheating but... I lost my Gauss in the first one...screw that!

Gonna need a bigger boat! biggrin

Congrats on the King Crab, you cheater you!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

I think I know that mission you speak of. The secret there is baiting the enemy correctly and using terrain to slow them down so you can gang up on each one as they come along. If you can sensor lock one mech before it comes into view or before it can view YOUR guys, then you can soften it quite a bit before the actual engagement occurs.

Good luck with 2 King Crabs, an Atlas and a Banshee all in a group coming after YOU. Those elite pilots are a LOT better.

I got the crab fair and square, I just restart when I lose my Gauss now.

Again, separate them using terrain. I'm sure you can core one mech after two or three alphas from your squad by now? So if you can use the terrain to shield you from the rest while you work on one mech, all the better. I must admit it gets some practice to learn how to bait properly and sometimes the terrain features offer very little protection.

I guess you didn't really read what I said.

I had already dealt with SEVEN (7) assorted Heavy and Assault mechs and six or seven PPC tanks, Demolishers etc and we were all pretty beat up and FOUR more appeared, 2 crabs, an Atlas and a Banshee, all between my four Arm-less, sparking and leg dragging lance members.

Out maneuver them ? Not a chance.

Outgun them? No freakin way, we had all lost at least one primary weapon already. Pretty sure it was a bug that allowed that second Assault Lance of reinforcements to spawn.

In the one I beat this morning I got out in a very hot LZ and that was only the first Heavy Lance of reinforcements.

smile Don't worry, I did read it. And like I said, I think I know this mission as I played something like it. Not as bad as what's appearing in your mission IIRC but still along the lines of overwhelming odds.

What I did was (wait for it.....) separate them using terrain! Not just for the reinforcements but with the initial targets as well. I usually save the mission at turn 1 so I can replay the mission with that RNG of baddies; I've found that replaying the mission from the Argos can sometimes give you different enemy composition. Anyway, if you've saved at turn 1, you kinda know what you're up against so try baiting the enemy towards an ambush point. Obviously this can be tricky depending on terrain and how fast your enemy convoy runs, but the fun part is experimenting and finding out what works. Finding that point where you aggro certain mechs or vehicles is tricky and positioning yourself so that the AI chooses a certain route towards you takes practice as well.

I wonder if you have the same map as I had? Mine was slightly mountainous without much vegetation and was hot IIRC. I used ridges to block LOS and to impede the enemy from ganging up on me and also used my spotter mech to sensor lock so that my LRMs could soften targets prior to LOS. Knowing that I had a good fight ahead of me, I also made sure I took the mechs out ASAP once LOS was established. No playing around, no hoping for salvage, just kill and move on. Luckily, in my game, my target vehicles weren't moving very fast and by the end of the mission, I would just get my spotter close enough to sensor lock and my other guys can be way behind but still fire their weapons and get solid hits.

I wonder if sharing save games would be possible? I would love to play this mission you speak of and how I'd fare with it. Aren't your guys rank 10 in everything by now?

There are a couple of missions you’ll see like that. The one Ice mentioned, 4 assault/heavies kind of ahead of the spawn, hot hot environment, a bit to the left. Then 4 assaults that come from the top of the hill off to the east/right.
Like Ice said, keep them seperate, use the mound between you and the first set, avoiding the radiation tiles...take them fast, using the mound for cover to section them off. When you get to the last one, start backing off towards your spawn. The assaults are coming from the right, but they’re slow. Back up and use the ridge on the right to hit the assaults with LRM’s from cover. Hit the lighter ones first, they’ll be coming in one at a time due to their weights.

Another, the one I think you mean, is on a hill or small mountain, you’re facing the crest, some water downhill to the left, a base downhill to the right.
4 or more come from ahead, on the slightly left, then 4 more come in from the right side of the crest. Much like the other map. Rather than going for the water or ahead to hit the ones slightly on your left, immediately head right at a sprint, right from the get go. Take out the nearby mech, then as you move around the base, work on the others. On the east side of the base, it goes downhill again. As you continue attacking and moving, continuously move east. Finish off these 4 and by the time you reach the downhill by the base, the 4 from the west will be cresting the top of the main hill, but they come one at a time for now. Keep moving and attacking, but now move along the side of the hill, north. You’re leading them as you make your way to the other body of water. As they come in after you, there are some large rocks you can keep between you and them. By the time you reach the water, you’re probably in much better shape than they are. Finish them off from the water.

Sectioning them off, using any large rock or mesa, is how most missions will go. A pilot with sensor lock and others running some LRM’s in their builds can get you out of most difficult missions like these.

No water, it's Highlands with all the high land off to the left, then a large plateau in front and to the right.

No water. It's a convoy intercept and two maxed skilled, 4 launcher each (++ minimum, a mix of LRM 10's and LRM 15's) and it takes all 8 launchers to kill one vehicle and there are at least 7!

I had never seen the map before and until yesterday had never replayed a mission. I have won them ALL! I had never had arms shot off like that since I got out of light mechs.

The only way to win is ignore the convoy for as long as you can. Kill the escorts, head most of your mechs towards the extraction zone and then start on the convoy. As soon as you kill 2 vehicles..all hell will break loose. My Crab was blown to crap, missing both arms and one torso when the leopard snatched us away.

No separating the escorts they come from one spot and stay bunched up....and shoot really well.

It sucked.

Saw a new bug today. My armor was showing like 400 short of normal on my mech after a battle and repair. Finally fixed it by putting it in refit and hitting max all armor. Nothing moved except the total that you see in deployment screen or mech bay window.

I hate the convoy missions too. I have an LRM Stalker that can take out the ground units pretty easily, and he’s good for setting up assaults to fall over easily. It’s good to have an LRM boat with a spotter in odd situations. Otherwise, get someone fast and reasonably armored to run ahead and stomp the crap ou of them instead of shooting them. While the LRM guy, with the skill to multi-target, preferably, helps you and the other 2 mechs holding the others off. Sprint away and drag them where you want them whenever you heat up. Every other turn if you have to, just keep moving.

My problem is that I want more campaign! I’ve gotten tired of playing just to play since there aren’t really any weapon caches to find to make building fun again.
148 hrs is pretty good without having dlc yet.

In this map, with a little hill/high land to the left, plains to the right, does it have a little butte in that plains too? Might be the map I'm talking about. The convoy starts to your left and exits to your right.

The convoy vehicles are slow enough that I can snipe the last vehicle just as the front vehicle goes around the butte, maybe the 2nd-last vehicle too. Then as they go around the butte, I run to catch up. Again, strategic placement of my spotter means he can target lock in absolute safety (no LOS from target to spotter) while my guys launch Guass, PPCs, and missiles from extreme range. Less damage but that means I don't get shot at in return. I don't engage the convoy until the escorts and others are dealt with, that helps control aggro. IIRC, engaging one convoy vehicle means the entire escort comes for you so I just bait the escorts little-by-little and make short work of them.
