WOLF

You are what you do when it counts

I will do terrible things to protect myself and all that I've worked for.
But even in your deepest, darkest nightmares you can't imagine the horrific things I'll do to protect my family.

Unfortunately, we are forgetting. When I was growing up, it was a big deal. There would be interviews with vets in the newspapers and TV. Of course, there would be at least one channel running the classic movie, D Day, the 6th of June.

The past few years, there was at least a mention of the day. This year, nothing.

IMHO, I think it’s mostly due to human nature where important events eventually fade with each passing generation. Humans for the most part are concerned only with the here and now.

Even 9/11 barely gets a quick mention in the news now and that only happened 17 years ago.

Human nature. Ours will be the last generation to commemorate this. Trafalgar Day was once a huge celebration but now is long lost. When did the US Civil war end ? I have no idea. VE and VJ day are pretty much forgotten as well.

1865 and the war is essentially forgotten in the northern and western states. It's still of course remembered in the south but even that is starting to fade.

Can’t be forgotten in France. The Normandie military cemeteries are there for all to remember.
And then, believe it or not, the French still have an enormous sense of respect and gratitude for what these young men did back in 1944.

Cheers,
Slug

Most kids/young adults would know next to nothing about WWII, if it wasn't for video games. Heck I'm sure many don't even realize they are based on real events (however inaccurate).

We have Polish, German and British war cemeteries around here, plus the secret German execution cemetery on the outskirts of the town, the sacrifices that people made are not forgotten nor are collaborators forgotten either.

The importance of this event, and WW2 in general, on our lives can not be exaggerated. Everything that followed is because of a direct or indirect influence of the Second World War. Communist China is Communist, because the Japanese invaded the country, causing Chiang Kai Shek to break off from his fighting with Mao, and defend the nation against Japan. There wouldn't have been a Berlin wall because there wouldn't have been an East and west Germany. There would not have been a Korean War and we wouldn't have Kim to worry about because Korea would never have been divided in two. The U.S. would never have gotten involved in Viet Nam because it would have just remained a French problem.
Many of us wouldn't be here, because a lot of us are part of the baby boom that occured when all those guys came back from over seas.
There would probably not have been a Cold War, and we, most likely, would have some nuclear weapons by now, but not the amount we have. There would have been no hurry to develope jets. We might not have seen them make a real huge impact on aviation until well into the 50's.
You could probably think of dozens of more ways the war affected all of our lives if you sat down and thought about it.

"From our orbital vantage point, we observe an earth without borders, full of peace, beauty and magnificence, and we pray that humanity as a whole can imagine a borderless world as we see it, and strive to live as one in peace."

My deepest respects.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

I wouldn't freely be posting here, had it not been for their great sacrifice. We owe them everything.
