Folks, I just happen to dig up my long lost Gunship! CD. I was wondering if anybody knew if Gunship! will install and play on a Windows 10 machine? Are there any mods/patch available as well?

I tried it a while ago but couldn't get it to run.

The only website still offering mods and patches, afaik, is this one: http://www.quantumhammer.com/simwarrior/gunship/index.html

People are running it via the DosBox emulator...

But you can always try Apache Longbow from DiD, pretty good to for its time.

old thread i know, but red you are talking about GUNSHIP 2000 from the early 90s, wheras the game in question is "Gunship!" from 1999 (number 3 in the series)

Gunship! does work on windows 7 and windows 10 as far as my experience with it goes, - and you can buy Gunship! on steam even, though i dont think it is patched, you would need to add the game patches and any other mods or tweaks yourself - also the FM (flight model) file you might want to fiddle with so as to get the handling right

you might need to try a few different compat settings and or maybe employ a wrapper like dgvoodoo or nglide if you want the nicest looking graphics and performance but apart from that it should be fine

Gentlemen, did anyone manage to run this game on windows 10? Nothing works for me, and with patches and with different versions.

- gunship! (ie Gunship 3) are you meaning? i have this running on windows 10 perfectly fine, with mods and extra missions added in its as great as it ever was - i am using Dgvoodoo to help with teh 3d acceleration of course, its vital if want it running smoothly and crisply

what is happening for you exactly? do you have the steam store version? i have that and english and german versions and they all work for me on windows 10

I have different versions. Steam version no. This error is CoCreateinstance () returned error code 80040154 (340). Nothing helps, not compatibility, not patches.

Bump for 2020. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has managed to get this old game to run on W10.

Get the GOG version. As far as I know it works. They created a DX wrapper that solves the graphics issues to the point that I have used the wrapper on my heavily modded version and it did not crash.

Try it for yourselves in my case it was well worth the expense.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I have 3 or 4 boxed versions gathering dust around here so i'm loathed to make yet another purchase! Still, if it's a sure-fire way to get it running, then i guess i will have to bite the bullet.

I am not a heavy user of the game.

The only side effect I have noticed is a faint skip once in a while. This is much better then the heavy slowdown before the wrapper. It might be caused by some of the mods I am using.

Out of curiosity, Which mods are you using?

I bought it a few weeks ago and kept getting crashes. Didn't look into why though, I'll give it another go now that I have the time.

@Hawk

I run 2 or three different NOCD exes. one is HD v1 and the other is editbeta2.

the platoons from the V2 exe and a sound fix or two for stereo effects and some are marked Gunship III.

I know one of the fixes I used joins the panel spacing in high resolutions. To be honest I keep a safe copy of my modded install and use it after a reinstall. The safe copy now includes the GOG wrapper. added to my 2004-5 install.

hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, Blind Faith.

I made another attempt at installing a boxed version, but still no joy. It looks like a purchase from GOG will be necessary, in the new year.

You do need the GOG wrapper anyway because the game slows down to a crawl with Windows 10 limited directdraw support. If you like the game it is not that much of an expense considering it resurrects all the nice nods.

I installed to the new PC I am building with Windows 10 64 20H2 a Core I9 64G and RTX2070 super. it started with the fake CD iso running like sh** without HD and the wrapper but did start. My CD is tagged GS_122a

1. Make sure you run Autoplay as administrator (you may have to restart by hand)
2. do not install to a "program files 86" folder chose the name you want
3 skip directX installation and registering
4 Windows 10 should ask to install its cheap directdraw let it go through, it does not help but does not hurt that I know of

Good Luck!
P.S. using this method I installed most of my older games

Just a gentle reminder that my Gunship! website is online, where you can find most user-created mods including those from previous SimHQ Forum member samovar6 (who I can only assume has passed away as he was last active on here over 3 years ago and all personal communication between us ceased some time ago).
