I've been lurking here for over a decade, always enjoying the content here, wallpapers, sim industry news etc. I always headed to the forums area to watch and see the discussions.

Today I noticed the last news update was almost 12 months ago on the front page and I felt really sad to see this once active and vibrant sim site has fallen into disrepair. What do you guys think? Is there anything we can do to help prop it back up?

Oh wow, just 40 posts in over 10 years? You are a lurker extraordinaire! wink

You ask some very good questions but I'm afraid there are no easy answers.

I'll say this much though: PC simming-related forum activity across the entire internet has decreased significantly so it's not a unique problem with SimHQ.

It's become the CommunityHallandPWEC.com site

Look at the who's online thing and most members are in one of those two forums.

Personally, I've never understood discussing politics with strangers on the internet, but others sure seem to like it.

The gaming sub forums I frequent however, are mostly dead.

I used to love the 'so there I was" sort of stuff that people who were enthusiastic about their games and sims posted regularly. There is basically none of that stuff anymore.

Over the past year or so I've mainly stuck to three forums

Falcon 4
Strategy Games
Elite Dangerous

Dead.
Mostly Dead.
Dead.

Indeed; I've not been here long and have noticed the decline in articles and discussions. The games I play, I'm too busy playing to be taking screenshots and doing after-action reports, but I do come back here for discussion.

Write more articles? One thing I can point to as an example - I made a Helios profile to be used with Falcon BMS. My thread on that project here does not get any activity, the same thread on the BMS forums has loads. So it's not really just a decline in simming population, it's a decline in member activity here on SimHQ specifically. Other simming forums are more active.

IMHO...

The right to free speech has killed the forums off.

Just come out of one Sub - Forum I use to frequent on here back in the day and sad to see the state of it.

Use to be a place where people could ask questions and help one another - now it's in a state where a small minority of people use it to attack developers and anyone else with a view different to theirs. All in the name of free speech.

I mean, granted - if something sucks - yes you are entitled to your view, and I support that to an extent - but come on guys, several threads of bashing the same thing over and over and over and over for years on end?
It's filling the forums with negativity for the sake of a few individuals ego.
Literally - you can count the number of those users with the fingers on your hands and it's mostly negative stuff.
That crap puts other people who simply want to enjoy the games they play completely off posting in the forums anymore. Ergo, users don't come back anymore to avoid it.
Have a problem? Don't bother posting as someone will hijack it to trash the developer!

Boohoo -the game doesn't do what I want it to, so everyone else must suffer!

Just MHO of course! hahaha

The irony of using free speech to complain about the right to free speech smile

Please show me a thread where one person has asked a help question and has not gotten it answered and has instead devolved into dev-bashing?

These guys seems to have gotten the help they asked for:

Maybe the sub-forum is in a sad state because the simulation in question is in a sad state?

Well, it still sucks for years on end, why are you expecting a change in sentiment? As for ego, I would love for the devs to prove me wrong. The ball is in their court and has been for years and years, what have they been doing with it?

Would you rather have honest negativity or sterilized positivity?

Demonstrated to be an inaccurate statement.

Go to other sub-forums and the mood/atmosphere is different. I wonder why? biggrin

No need to blame one or groups of ppl but it's the decline of the sim industry as a whole.. decline of SHQ is just a small part of it.
Heck event the "decline" threads are a monthly occurrence now apparently.
And i've seen similar trends on other sim websites.

"Free Speech"?

Seems every few years, a bunch of self-empowered know-it-alls starts up with "free speech" on a forum. I'm not naming anyone here, I'm just saying.

Free Speech online in general and on a forum is particular is typically horse manure. This isn't the US Senate or even main street USA. We all agreed to a Terms of Service clause for this forum, and in general most rights in the USA are misunderstood greatly.

See? You're onto the answer just by posting your question: interaction and participation.
Forums where people show up just to read are called "blogs". wink
Forums die when people stop interacting. Obviously SHQ has opened up to discussing a lot more than just sim gaming, but as long as people share the general interest, it still makes it a good place to hang out. People with similar interests naturally end up talking about other interests as well.
Keep it up, you're now part of the solution.

Is it really a decline in the sim industry? Or has players' interest moved elsewhere? I think this was discussed here a while back, how the younger gamers are more for the instant gratification and less and less, if any, go to study-sim material. Heck, even on "lite" sims, people have argued that things like Ace Combat gets more gametime than something like Flaming Cliffs 3.

Hmmm... that's an interesting way to put it. So even in the other sub-forum where people point out the oopsies of devs, there is interaction and participation so even that "bad" thing is a good thing?

Its not just this site, most of the forums that I frequent are a shadow of their former selves.

The traditional forum format just isn't particularly popular anymore, especially with the younger generations who'd rather be on Reddit, the Chans and exchanging videos.

As 462cid rightfully points out, a right to free speech is an issue between governments and their citizenry. The forums have rules that limit speech here more than the U.S. government / constitution does.

Products, developers and marketing are fair game for examination and discussion here. Attacking members on the other hand, is against the rules. Note: Challenging someone's opinions/assertions is NOT the same thing as attacking the author. There is a difference, and it matters.

As Ice points out, people still ask for and receive help here, even in sub-forums that contain a lot of criticism of the product(s) that the sub-forum focuses upon.

People have their reasons for posting what they do and at whatever frequency they choose to post it. I think chalking it all up to ego feeding is misguided.

Do some people get turned off by notable quantities of negative posts? Almost certainly. However, negative observations, if they hold up to scrutiny, also provide a service to the community. Folks who have little or no tolerance for it have other available venues that cater to their desired levels of peace and harmony. To each their own. As Ice points out, there are quite a few sub-forums here that do not have notable quantities of negative posts accumulating in them. It is worth truly considering why that is.

And you are entitled to it. Just as others are free to challenge your assertions / opinions / reasoning.

The current owner of SimHQ dropped running ads from game developers after he took over. The logical conclusion from that is that he was not interested in being held hostage to keeping developers happy about what was posted in these forums. That approach doesn't please everybody, but it does provide value to some.

It is worth noting that it wasn't all that long ago that the IL2:BoS sub-forums were quite contentious. The situation in there back then was very much like what the situation appears to currently be in the sub-forums that I think you are referring to. IL2:BoS sub-forums these days have a different complexion... why? IMHO, 1CGS (the product developer/publisher) wisely changed their team management, and the new management has been responsive to the concerns of the community. While I don't have any of the IL2:BoX series of simulations, the message traffic I see leads me to conclude the 1CGS is putting out a better product now. I don't have any inside insight on how they do business, but it appears to me that Jason deserves a lot of credit for the turn-around.

I was trying to do a tongue in cheek post, but possibly didn't come across that well driving

I am talking about my experience a good few years ago - the reasons I have avoided posting on the forums for a few years are that there was an unwelcoming atmosphere developing in a lot of posts - and all by people who wanted their say or complain about stuff.
Crack on for legitimate complaining - but doing the same over and over again puts other people off. People get tired of it and don't come back - hence lowering numbers, in my opinion.
Yes, the sim is broken most of the time - and yes, please point out it's faults - but for the love of god please people, stop flogging the dead donkey! soapbox I don't want to be reminded that the same issue is there 25 times ina row just because you've been banned from ED's forums for doing the same hehe.
Though I reserve the right to complain about the Harrier's Navflir not working....... though Razbam have already come out and said they can't do jack about it as the rendering is in ED's basket. Death to ED! neaner

On a serious note, they are still games - however some people treat it as life or death. I've seen posts in places complaining that an MFD looked the wrong size, or it appeared to be positioned in the cockpit 1" too far to one side and demanded the developers completely re-do the cockpit. Just chill out people - take a moment and ask. What would Jesus do?

Yes there is one post that is evident on there that one man has had a crusade to point out the same things over and over quite literally for years, starts off good but descends into vitriol. I don't know how people do it..... I'm single and work fulltime and don't have the spare time to be as devoted as that to being vitriolic smash fair play to the man for commitment though! *doffs hat* actually jealous he has that much time!

And my sympathy lays with the module developer on that one - though god help if I posted that in there. The base software changes every two seconds breaking something - why the heck would you continue developing anything for that until it's fixed?! The module developers aren't given half a chance - maybe they are to blame for being ambitious? - but when you spend months fixing something only for it to be broken again with a patch from ED - what would you do? Not forgetting that they have wages to pay, overheads - if something is not cost effective and you know will be a waste of time until the code is fixed - why waste time / money ? No business can work like that.
I've occasionally popped onto their facebook page to check what they are up to with the module, and they are continuously working on the it (or so they would have us think!) - now 2.5 is out, lets see what they do in the next few months. Heck, they might fix it and have it working perfectly - what are the complainers going to pick on next?! xwing
I paid peanuts for that module, and couldn't give a monkeys about it's current state, I've had several hours use out of it - so already quids in on it! - I cant even buy a single round of drinks for what that cost me........ if someone has 4 beers and get a bad hangover, do they spend 4 years complaining about it?! confused

I will defend peoples right to have their say.
But I defend my right to say you are all wrong and ignore anything I don't agree with winkngrin

In all honesty -

Facebook is to blame!

most developers have pages, or fan pages etc. And most people probably find it much simpler to use those than come onto something like SimHQ - perhaps SimHQ's future lays on social media?
And, this is a niche hobby - people dip in to try it out, but if it's no longer fun they bugger off.

I spend most of my time flying the Harrier in DCS just practicing start ups, and landing on the carrier / night time refuelling

Social media is cancer. Eventually people will realize this, and community-based sites will get back some of that old Internet market share.

I blame it on the Millenials! (low hanging fruit hahah)

People are over stimulated these days. Taking time to communicate with others is becoming a lost art.
Sadly, a recent article said that "people feel more alone and isolated now then previously"

I have a vested interest in the SimHQ Community. Don't care that we are (not) playing the same games at the moment. I come for the people/friends/fellowship.

Going back 10+ years ago, I was convinced my flight sim dreams would eventually be fulfilled by either Strike Fighters or Falcon. Both were current sims (to me), both were completely DRM-free (making copy of CD for safe keeping, no online connection requirement whatsoever), and both had potential of eventually offering practically every era of aircraft and every theater/scenario imaginable (my preference being modern/ultra-modern and Scandinavia).

SF for the ultimate survey sim, proper replacement for Jane's FA/USAF (adding proper stealth characteristics and playback system). This is the sim I *might* have wanted to give multiplayer a go one day.

F4 for the ultimate detailed high-end survey sim (including proper avionics for each aircraft, as was planned on release).

I thought SF would eventually go that way, covering WWI to ultra-modern, with modern avionics superior to EF2000/F-22 ADF, advanced setup for a user-defined dynamic campaign scenario (maybe include AWACS from TAW) and stealth gameplay even better than the Microprose Stealth Fighter sims!

With F4 I thought, "What *can't* they do, they have the source code?!" A new EF2000 using the Falcon source was a definite, over time.

Now I have my own belated flight sim dreams, which probably will never come true either. <sigh> But success or failure is up to me.

++++++++++

Side note: I have yet to see an F-22 or F-35 at an airshow, static or flying. I know they fly, but not at the shows I've gone to.

Also, I've never seen the F-117 in person, but that might be changing soon enough (I feel a road trip to Dayton, OH in my future). smile

And in forums the most active topic is "What is the last TV show you saw..." biggrin

But if but if it serves consolation: all other forums around - related with "flight games", are in the same situation, soon will be like dinosaurs.

And what for replace then? Apparently nothing, not even this new thing Reddit seems more active when related to flight games and related hardware.
