Not all padded shorts are created equal. I have recently started increasing my cycling in order to get a good workout from it. For me, this means 15.5 miles - about 300 miles per month. For a novice, this means learning about saddle discomfort.

The cause of saddle discomfort can be related to multiple factors including saddle type, saddle position, and the clothing you wear (especially padded shorts).

Anyway, long story short (no pun intended) - after experiencing numbness and pain in my crotch area for several weeks, I finally found the right combination of saddle and shorts. It can vary from cyclist to cyclist, but for me, it was a pair of bib shorts from Castelli and a saddle from Serfas.

Saddle

Bib Shorts

I got the saddle used for $30 but the shorts were expensive at $150. Believe me, I have three other padded shorts but the Castellis have such a superior padding that the difference is worth it. In fact, as soon as I can afford it, I will buy a second pair. I guess when it comes to some things (like my "junk"), money is no object. biggrin

Proper shorts and gloves can really help out if you're going on long rides. Having good aero clothing may also make you a significantly faster rider.

What kind of bike do you ride?

I'm absolutely mad with jealousy if it's a Schwinn Stingray with the banana seat and the three speed shifter on the frame!

Last summer I saw a young lady cycling , and I can attest that proper shorts DO make the experience more pleasant smile

to the OP: I commute by bike and ride 40 km every weekday (800 km or 500 miles every month) and never experience any saddle discomfort, except the first 2 or 3 rides after the winter break. Don't use padded shorts, just my ordinary casual work clothes, and the saddle is nothing special.
Everyone is different and all that, but I suspect your bike is not well fitted to your body measurements, suggest you look into it (http://www.setthebike.com/theory) or bring the bike to a shop to get it fitted

I went through a lot of saddles, but ended up with a split one like posted...back when I was riding on the street. Shorts were a necessity too (I wore regular bike shorts or an underwear type), but like nibbio said, getting fitted is huge.
Years later when I'd just put on too much weight and riding was simply painful to get back into, I moved to a recumbent, stationary when I got started at the gym. I LOVE IT.
If I go back to riding on the road, I may end up getting one of these. They've gotten really popular around here over the last few years. Being that low on the road would take some getting used to, they are really close to the ground, it's got to be nerve-wracking around cars.

Bought this mountain bike about 6 years thinking I would go riding with my son. Well, my son was into BMX more then mountain biking so it more a less
collects more dust then gets rode. Last week while looking through youtube videos. Found an E-Bike conversion kits that can easily transform your old
bike into an E-Bike.

Here is the Mountain Bike I bought

Already removed the bottom brackets and ready to install my E-Bike mid mount conversion kit. When it arrives tomorrow.

And to power it.

Hoping to have it all ready to go next week when Spring gets here. To much snow yet.

Just by coincidence, yesterday I picked up a new to me 2015 Bianchi Nirone road bike in red.

It matches a blue Bianchi Lupo cyclocross bike someone gifted me just last week - I like that bike but basically gave it to my gf as her own to ride. My old 1980's steel frame road bike was fantastic but she was kicking the crap out of me on hills even though I've got years of cycling experience vs her 1 week. When the bike is nearly double the weight it's pretty hard to keep up..!

My bike is a Giant Anyroad 1. It's referred to as a "gravel bike" although I stick to roads.
