and then abandoned it like the plague . And then the same thing happened here! Oh the irony. Not the same. Or at least I've never paid to post here

I think I might have glanced at this site from time to time before CS wanted to charge but after that SimHQ was the site I looked at the most though I also kept watching the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim newsgroup. I didn't see paying to reference a site when I thought the fact that I was answering questions there probably added value to the site. If they had offered me a free account I might have stuck around but I figured I'd be able to help more people on a site that everyone could access. I think CJ was the one who pointed out this site to our group.

Check. Smut was one of my main contacts with you guys. You guys are the ones who put SimHQ on the map as they say. Andy's interview that we landed with F15 was huge for the site. Oh, in regards to the OP's question... Frank, Rick, Eric and I all came from the old Janes and Imagic boards to start SimHQ many, many, years ago...

I was a Combatsim refugee. Here's a poll I created here on this very same subject 4 years ago. http://SimHQ.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3951540/1

It wasn't so much the charging back then for me... it was the amounts. IIRC, they were pretty expensive. I enjoyed both at the time, but I believe I discovered SHQ later.

I had both accounts. I originally spent more time a C-sim but as time went on I got to know Crash, Spoons, Pete, and others here. I was asked to join the writing staff about six months before the whole CSim migration. It took everyone here completely by surprise when it happened. All of a sudden we went from a nice little site to a monster. It was thrilling but pretty hectic.
For all of those that have been here since the exodus I thank you. The site has changed significantly over the last 18 years, some for good, some for bad, but it has always been the members here that drove the train. It obviously isn't what it used to be. Nothing is. But it still has a devoted following.

I'm not sure how long any of these sites will keep going. The income from 'ad clicking' isn't probably that high for a site like this.
Something tells me the cost overhead for this site is minimal so that helps.

Something tells me the cost overhead for this site is minimal so that helps. Probably not as cheap as you think. It costs roughly $180 a month to run M4T with a dedicated server and SimHQ always generated, and still does generate, a heck of a lot more traffic. Wheels
