Awwww it's not factual? Python's Terry Jones as the presenter (poor chap's in the grip of Dementia now) gave me an inkling to the veracity of this.

Here is what I think was the first ever TV April Fool spoof in 1957, caused much outrage about wasting Television Licence payers money on such 'silly fripperies' within the format of a serious news programme.
