Buy Back program

Never been a fan of VW, nephew had one and it was a lemon big time.

Quote
The automaker has so far spent $7.4 billion reacquiring about 335,000 of the roughly 500,000 vehicles that it agreed to repurchase owners as part of a settlement with the federal government for engineering the diesel-powered models to cheat on emissions tests.

A recent court filing revealed that Volkswagen had resold 13,000 and destroyed about 28,000 vehicles by the end of 2017, but still had 294,000 vehicles in storage at that time.

The automaker has until the end of 2019 to complete the buyback program.

Wow. Now that's what I call a major corporate screw up. I've never cared for VW myself.

They lost me when they got rid of the original Beetle back in the 60--70's loved that car always had one on the bench and one in car and wasn't squat to switch them out

I loved VW for many years. I have owned a Bug (don't recall the year) and a 1973 412. The 412 was awesome. Fuel injected pancake engine which was easy to work on, as long as you were small enough to fit into the engine compartment. The Bug was great since three people could remove the engine easily (two to lift the chassis and one to pull the floor jack). That was the first engine that I rebuilt (having blown it up when the fan belt left me on a late night drive home from work). A new block was less than $200 and the rest of the original parts still worked.

Was considering VW when I was looking at a vehicle to purchase. The pricing made absolutely no sense compared to the other options I was entertaining at the time, Ford, Vauxhall, Toyota, etc.

Or if you had a Baja Bug like I did, with all the rear body work around the engine removed, one person (me) could drop the engine by themself in about 15 minutes with some practice, which I had plenty of wink

Yep, putting it back was a bit more work but it was still fairly easy.

Yep, that was my way.

I've dropped the engine down using a floor jack and raised back up and wiggled it into place the same way, all when I weighed about 120 lbs soaking wet. My Baja also had about 16" ground clearance too so that helped.

Not even close.

Facebook has a bigger chance of going under at the moment, don't forget VW is more than just VW.

I have had a VW Passat Estate from new since 2006. Nearly 200k on the clock and hardly any problems apart from the first few weeks of ownership (never by a new car of a new model I've since learnt) beyond routine replacements on servicing. Drinks no oil. Has no rust. So I have been happy apart from now feeling ostracized from society for driving a diesel!
No.1 Son has a Golf, similar trouble-free history.

Certainly compared to the other troublesome cars I've owned (no wonder the UK car industry went belly up!) I have no complaints.

I never did like the air cooled rear drive VW's but the modern models IMO are quite good. I drove a Passat Estate diesel for about 3 weeks in the UK a while back and it was an absolutely fabulous car. Quiet, fast, comfortable and super fuel economy.....it was IMO just a wee bit too large fro small English village streets and parking lots smile

The whole "software cheating" business is IMO a tempest in a teapot. I almost positive that every other manufacturer does the same but are just better at keeping it under wraps biggrin

Holy crap batman...what a bunch of vehicles ! I'd buy one 'as is' if the price was right. All they have to do is sell them in places with no emission regs.

Or off of the front of an airplane....

They are still making the Bug down in South America. The VW engine in front of my Nieuport was brand new from a factory in Brazil.

I have been told that people usually buy only two VWs, if they are VW owners:

The first one, and their last one ever.

Meaning that if they get a good one twice they tend to keep the second one a long time, but if it goes sour twice, they don't come back.

What kind of car is that? What does it matter? When I drive it, I'm Steve McQueen
