Ok. Don't laugh. Especially all of you that have been following Goon's threads...

I haven't built a plastic model in probably 20 years. My son bough one of those 1/72 MV-22 Ospreys at the Miramar Air Show a couple years ago (like one of these https://www.amazon.com/26113-Bell-Boeing-V-22-Osprey/dp/B00J9W4JXO). He didn't want it anymore and so I put it on my flight sim desk, and actually thought the idea of displaying something there was a neat idea.

But I'm not that big of an MV-22 fan. So many other aircraft would look "cooler". And by-golly that's what's important.

Found a 1/72 Snap-tite A-10 on Amazon for $16. Bought about $4 worth of Acrylic paint from Michael's. I was sick over St Paddy's day weekend, and had to find something to do at night besides drink. Here is the result:

[Linked Image]

I'm more or less happy with how it turned out, given what I wanted it to do. It looks "cool" from a few feet a way. The one thing that bugs me the most is how the grey acrylic paint turned out over most of the aircraft. Took way to many coats to get good coverage, so it look like crap and most of the panel lines are gone. Foam brushes left lots of brush strokes. I tried to use a darker grey to achieve the two-tone grey camo that modern A-10's sport, but the contrast was too great between the two greys and I didn't feel like trying to mix custom colors at that point. In hind sight, I should have bought a $6 can of testor's grey to do as a base coat, and then used the acrylics for the rest of the colors. I think it would have really improved the overall appearance. As it stands now, I may get tired of looking at it when I actually sit at the desk.

Maybe I'll give it to my son to "play with" (AKA break within 15 minutes). Heck, for $20 I could buy another kit and can of spray paint and try to do it right (or at least better). Since it's a Snap-tite kit, I could save the pilot/cockpit and weapons (actually happy with how they turned out) to greatly reduce the work for the rebuild.

Looks pretty good! From my minis painting experience (very, very limited!!), you probably should've base coated it first, then thin down the pain so even if it's many coats, it's thin coats so the panel lines don't get drowned out.

Congrats on taking the plunge though!! Been wanting to do something similar for ages, but get intimidated all the time by goon! biggrin

Looks good to me. Co-incidentally I've just sent off for this:

These are perfect for hanging from the ceiling with fishing wire. No need for crazy detail work when folks view them from three feet or more away.

And don't sell yourself short; it looks great!

Thanks for the compliments guys. You're making me feel better about my effort!

Ice - totally agree I should have watered it down. That would have been a good alternative to buying restore spray.

To be fair, maybe we should have more of these types of builds! Makes me want to get one again now!

If you're willing to spend a little cash, a single action air brush will take your stuff to the next level. A little more will get a double action air brush that is all you'll ever need. As you noted though a spray can, can do wonders too!

malibu43, if I compared my models to others I would have quit a long time ago.

Yours is fine, anyone who can build anything in 1/72nd is to be admired, it is just too small a scale for me.
So, what's next? A twenty year break is enough, it is time to get back into it.

What's next? I don't know. It's still a question of "if" there's a next... I have too many hobbies as it is. This was a quick impulse build... I actually have two models sitting on my workbench in the garage that I've been trying to find a way to get rid of. I built them when i was a teenager, and they were recently hanging in my son's room. However, he's getting into his own stuff and is much more interested in having skate board posters "cool" stuff in his room than dad's old airplanes. I have some I have to get rid of before I get more.

As soon as I find another spot or excuse for a new one, I'll know.

Somebody at the airport gave me one of those Harbor Freight wooden Nieuport 17 models. I'm thinking about putting it together for the forum to set the minimums for quality of model building.

That's pretty good Malibu! Brush painting is NOT easy, especially with acrylics. Tamiya sprays would be a good way to get some authentic colours without the expense of an airbrush.

RedToo - that looks like a nice kit, and not easy. I hope we can see the result!

Let's see it Dart. It's not about quality, but how much fun you get out of the process.

Its easier to paint acrylics if you mix the following ingredients in a ketchup bottle:

2/3 distilled water
1/3 90% isopropyll alcohol
few drops acrylic retarder (prevents quick drying)
few drops acrylic flow aid (smoother finish)

mix 1/4 with any acrylic paint, too much thinning will make the paint fall off in later years.

That's good advice. Will definitely try something like that next time.

Here is the A-10 in it's new home. The MV-22 has been moved to the back corner for now. If the desk starts to feel too crowded if/when I actually ever get to sit and use it, the MV-22 might need to go somewhere else.

So over the last few months, I’ve touched up the A-10 a little here and there. I cleaned up the cockpit lines, added some detail/contrast to the engines, and some other details (like painting the tip of that thingy on the right wing black). It was neat to discover that I could use a tooth pick to scrape paint off the canopy, which really helped with straightening the lines out. I’m considering it done now, as the only other thing that bugs me is the finish of the acrylic paint on the fuselage and wings, and nothing can be done there unless I take all the decals off and buy a can of spray paint.

Well, after the release of DCS F/A-18C and going to the Miramar Air Show a week ago, I broke down and bought a 1/72 Hasegawa F/A-18C for $15 on Amazon. I’m gonna do it up as a VFMA-232 Red Devils jet, as they are based locally out of Miramar. I’ll start another thread on that, with some other questions and what-not…

So the silly looking loadout of 6 x MK82s and 2 x GBU-12's on an A-10A with no targeting pod was starting to bother me. The F/A-18C is all done, and I had to order a Hasegawa weapons set to finish it. That meant I had some extra weapons and racks left over that would look good on an A-10A. I so I stripped all the MK82s and GBU12s off the pylons (they were molded on) and set out to do a make over.

I scratch built some AGM-65's out of bamboo skewers and thin plastic from hanging file folder labels.
[Linked Image]

I also scratch built an ALQ-184 (using extra sprues and a tooth pick), two additional pylons for the fueselage, and a dual AIM-9 launcher. I broke down and bought an AIM-9 kit from ebay for $6 (Holy crap those little brass canards were hard to glue on! Will never do that again!)
[Linked Image]

I'm reusing the 6 x MK82s from the original model, and from the Hasegawa kit I have 2 x MK20's (standing in as CBU-87's) and 2 x TER's.

Oh yeah, I also used the bamboo skewers to make 2 x LAU-131 rocket pods.

Loadout will be (from right wing to left wing)

2 x AIM-9
LAU-131
AGM-65D
3 x MK82
CBU-87
CBU-87
3x MK82
AGM-65D
LAU-131
ALQ-184

New scratch built fuselage pylons painted and attached. The rest of the pylons were pulled off and repainted as well. The pylons with new LAU-117 racks (AKA tooth picks) for the AGM-65s aren't attached in this photo.
