"The automaker says it is aware of two accidents and one injury that may have been caused by the problem". This typically means there are other incidents out there of the same problem related to this recall.

The affected models are the Ford Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ, both from model years 2014-2018

My Grandad's Honda Accord had it's wheel come off, that was in the 80's though. He put it back on and drove it straight to a dealership and got a newer Accord. LOL

I had my work's minivan's steering wheel come off once while I was turning in the middle of an intersection. That was not a pleasant experience. I just braked smoothly until I was no longer in the middle and patched it up on the side of the road. I can't remember the maker of that thing, but it was a dangerous piece of crap. Mid 90's American made though.

So then some automakers for the past 35 yrs or so haven't gotten a good grasp on how to build a car that doesn't lose its steering wheel - that's awesome !

I have no desire to dismantle a modern steering column to see how things are done. The last time I removed a steering wheel was in an early 70's VW 412. The wheel was held on by a 36mm nut and even after removing the nut, it was difficult to remove. I guess things are much different now.

It’s ok. Once all cars go fully autonomous and computerized, we wont have to worry about steering wheels falling off anymore.

You know me well wheels but I do think that day is coming. I just don't think it will happen in my lifetime. I'm sure the incessant smartphone users can't wait for that day to come though since it means they won't have to worry about paying attention to the road!

Yep, then we just have to worry about a computer crash, road/traffic sensor failure or just the car AI trying to kill us then. biggrin

I also think it will inevitably happen Panzer but I am not a fan of the idea for just the very reasons F4U posted.

I would agree but from a statistical standpoint, there are probably more problems caused by stupid, or distracted, drivers than are likely to be caused by the potential hardware/software issues inherent in automated cars.

But automated cars have the "added feature" of being potentially susceptible to a system wide error that suddenly affects millions of cars all at once. So yes maybe they're safer than manual cars for a few years and then maybe one day make up for lost time by killing 100k+ people in an afternoon.

I don't really think it matters since they don't actually pay attention to the road now.

Considering how automated airline flights are, I don't think your predictions are valid.

One massive solar flare and all would come true.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Every airliner has a human pilot in control.
