I've noticed that since going black (adding nothing) I prefer a more plain coffee than flavored, with a couple of exceptions. They seem to have a less bitter aftertaste.

I usually like Costco's Kirkland brand, I'm going to have to give their coffee a try.

What about iced coffee? When I was younger I used to think that very concept was sacrilege but I've come to like iced coffee quite a bit.

Not for me. Tried it and it just wasn't right. Iced tea; hot coffee..

It's been here my whole life. It's a short trip though. LOL
I think it's throughout the South at least now.

Used to only do Dunkin Donuts, once I got a Keurig coffer maker I've gone to only them, but in about 4 flavors depending on the season. Cream and Sugar is a must

Yesterday had the best drip coffee I ever tasted from a local hipster coffee house/roaster.

I can only image how good it'd be with better prep?

Now if only I can force myself to return to an establishment filled with curled moustache Alpha Hipsters so I can buy some beans.

makes a superb cup of coffee with no filters.

Add in Café Bustelo and add your finishers and your set wink

When I was little my grandmother let me have some coffee in my milk on occasion, I loved it. Ive had a taste for coffee ever since.
I started drinking it black in my twenties and never looked back.

BTW I had to get a tire fixed a couple weeks back , and history shows that car repair shop coffee is some of the worst coffee in the USA. But these guys had a Keurig machine. I thanked them at least 3 times for their investment!

I hear ya! I like it when hotel rooms have one too. Those baby sized makers are horrible.
Once at work the coffee tasted terrible, when it was usually really good. Turns out one idiot a had cleaned the coffee maker...with 409. Poorly at that.
I think that’s still a step above tire shop and vending machine coffee.

Wash bean is best bean.

https://www.roastycoffee.com/washed-unwashed-coffee/

The biggest advantage of washed/wet processed beans is that they contain a lot less of the mold growth that otherwise occurs, which means less mycotoxins to upset your stomach and make you feel jittery and spaced out.

Java Joes or Starbucks - not too picky as long as its a dark roasted coffee of good quality (not bitter). Always use 6 oz of purified water per tablespoon of whole bean coffee, ground immediately before turning on the coffee pot. Also the coffee brew must be set to a slow brewing time so the water is recycled through the grounds before dumping into the karaff. The coffee must not sit on the karaff at the highest heat setting or your risk burning it. After 1 hour or less in a heated karaff coffee begins to lose its flavor and burn too if on higher heat settings.

If you don't use good water or you use 8 oz per tablespoon instead of 6 or you buy already ground coffee then your coffee will not taste very good as you clearly don't know what you're doing.

If you want freshness then roasting it yourself is the way to go, you can even use a frying pan.

Green beans are cheap and have a long shelf life so you can buy in bulk and just roast in batches as needed.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I definitely want to do my own roasting but would like to be able to do about 200g at one time so I'm looking at the little roasting units that you can set on top of a gas stove and rotate till they're done.

My partner in this doesn't drink coffee at all and is really dragging her heels at the prospect of putting more money into coffee equipment so I'm just going to have to let the staff struggle for a week or two with the consumer-level equipment that she's brought over from another office space - yeah, it's already proving impossible - I figure she'll relent and finally agree to buy the proper equipment needed. Eventually she'll realize customers don't want to pay $4 for junk, preground coffee bought at the supermarket across the road and pushed through a $20 automatic coffee maker.. Yikes. We didn't even have a kettle to boil the water until I brought it in from my own house, she was going to pour pots full of boiling water into filters full of ground coffee, or even use instant coffee crystals.. Bleh, non coffee drinkers!

We have found so far though, Japanese old people (Our main customers, since Japan is basically an old population) really like weak, watered down coffee. That's fine, but everyone definitely noticed the difference in taste when I swapped up garbage from the supermarket with some quality Hawaiian macadamia vanilla coffee. The smell and taste of that stuff is just fantastic.

Black Rifle Coffee Company. Red White and Brew, medium roast. Tastes good, nothing special. I love the looks I get when I take it to work. Priceless.

Speaking of coffee, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Jerry Seinfelds series of short interviews is on Netflix now. Highly recommended.

I was wondering if Black Rifle was any good - usually "custom" means "burnt."

My experience with the Columbian light roast beans from the local roaster has been mixed. You can get an awesome cup out of this stuff but the margin of error in preparing it seems really low compared to my usual choices. It can easily come out super sour or bitter, depending on small changes in water temp, grind and the phases of the moon.

Oh, did I tell you how much I hate manual grinders? Because I do, as it takes me less time and effort to do 100 chinups than to produce enough grind for one stinkin' cup of coffee, mind you, its the Moloko +P+ of coffee.

Since I have a weak sense of smell (and therefore lack a nuanced palate), I don't have the ability to really get into the whole coffee snob thing.

Things like "top notes," "undertones," and "hints" of flavors are completely lost on me.

Coffee tastes like coffee. When it's bitter, it doesn't taste like coffee. It tastes bitter. When it's weak, it tastes like weak coffee.

When one dumps a bunch of nutmeg or hazelnuts in it, it tastes like nutmeg or hazelnuts. Not coffee.

If one put up a blind taste test of different brands of coffee of a like roast, I probably couldn't tell much of a difference.
