...so, I hope he emphasizes to his children how important it is to eat properly and maintain proper weight, especially since they might be even more susceptible genetically. At least he can spend some big money on fitness and trainers or whatever.
Diabetes runs in my family as well (father is mild type-2) and I know talking with first cousins some of the negative implications. I was so headed there myself prior to 2008, my optometrist in Jax thought I might be at least pre-diabetic from my eyeballs.
Hanks attitude in that interview, I dunno...probably just joking, but he does blame his crappy diet in other interviews.

I think the idea is fine and Hanks will do a good job but at 61 he is getting too old to realistically portray a destroyer captain. Normally the rank of a Destroyer captain is Lt. Commander, roughly equivalent to a US Army Major.
They had better go hard on the makeup to make him look to be in his early 40s. Even that would be stretching it for a Destroyer captain. Maybe a flotilla commander as a full commander but doubtful even in the mid 40s. He would have been riding a desk at that age.

He can pass for a 1940’s 40 something. Halsey was about 60 but looked in his 80’s by today’s standards.

Ted Danson played an army captain in SPR, he would have been the oldest officer of that rank in theater at his age (50 at the time.)

The most hilarious example I can think of is Lee Marvin in "The Big Red One. A 50+ year old army sergeant?? And if I remember correctly he was just like a staff or technical sergeant. He was nowhere near a sergeant major.

That wasn’t all that inaccurate, rank was made and kept in a very different way back then. Nowadays if enlisted men don’t make certain ranks in certain amounts of time, they’re kicked out.
IIRC he was the platoon sergeant, which was one of the ranks in the highest grade at the time (E7.) As an E7 your rank depended on your duty position, so an army E7 who was the highest NCO in a company would be the 1st sergeant, the senior NCO on a regimental or higher staff or would be a sergeant major, and an E7 whose duty position was a platoon sergeant held the rank of master sergeant. Today E7 is sergeant first class, E8 is master sergeant (staff) or first sergeant, and E9 is sergeant major (staff), command sergeant major, or sergeant major of the army.

However, one more video on Tom Hanks diabetes that I saw this morning where he acknowledges genetics as being a major culprit, so his children will want to keep that in mind...

It doesn’t matter how old an actor is, as long as they can look the part. They’re playing a role. My point is that Hanks ages well and can pass for how a 40 something looked 70 years ago. It takes a 20-30 year old to play an 18 year old from back then. LOL Weren’t a lot of the actors in Band of Brothers about 30?
