Mostly, I think, it's because of the way kids (and some adults I suppose) play these games. They binge play until they beat the game. Sometimes in hours, it seems. Then it's over. How many times can you play the same game.
Seventy dollars is kind of expensive for a few hours worth of gameplay. Multi-player games give you more gaming for the money. The experience can change so much when playing with or fighting against real people. Multi player games can often be played for years. That's getting your money's worth.
Now Witcher sounds different I haven't played it, but it sounds as though there is so much to do, and so much to see that the experience never gets old. If you replay it you may have a whole different experience than you did the first time. Most gaming companies don't sem to know how to pull this off.
It's not really my type of thing, but you guys are making be wonder if I should pick up Witcher 3!

I say no, but too many are now just extended tutorials for the multiplayer aspect.

I tend to imagine the question as:

"Are FPS games where platformers were in the late 1990s?"

It's certainly a genre I lost interest in some while ago. The last FPS game I truly enjoyed was BF3 (2011). I was a big MP gamer back then. It's gone downhill from there. Nothing could persuade me to play COD style games now. They all look so formulaic and boring.

Maybe as we get older we crave more sophistication and less twitch-shooter.

No, but single player FPS games are certainly dying. At least pure SP FPS games. Some of the most popular games right now are FPS, GS: GO, R6 Siege, Battlefield and Overwatch.

But when it comes to SP FPS games they are few and far between. At least good ones. Most SP games these days are fused with an MP aspect and designed around repeating side quests and grinding. I'd be happy with a game similar to Crysis, which was open enough to give some freedom when it comes to tackling objectives but didn't require you to run around and acquire sticks and stones. Too many gamers obsess with length rather than quality.

I'm loving ARMA3 with mods. But I loved Operation: Flashpoint so it's no surprise.

Remember the days playing Battlefield 2. It is still the best and most complete multiplayer FPS experience in my opinion. Especially with good teams plying against each other on both sides. As for single player FPS. As for single player PFS i choose Rainbow Six : rogue spear which was a lot of fun planning and executing a mission.

FPS is still alive. But with a larger populous playing these games, the chance of encountering cheaters and spoilers increases too, which spoils the whole experience.

But nowadays i tend to slow play, so my target games is more in the league of Arma3, CMANO or Combat mission : black sea. They have a relaxing game play style.

As for Operation: Flashpoint, look at this: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=756113314.

Cheers cheers

They are for me, as I am older slower reacting and just plain suck at them, plus, the cheating and gaming the game is so rampant that it is just isn't fun for me. I hate it because I loved ARMA II, but I just can't justify the money spent or the time to become proficient to go online and play with all the Professional Rambos, as it seems everyone is indestructible except me. Or maybe I just suck that bad, LOL, either way I am done with them. pilot
