Here's the list:

http://variety.com/2018/film/news/list-2018-oscar-nominations-1202668757/

Thoughts? I think a few movies got robbed... how "Logan" and "Wind River" got looked over is beyond me... Logan got one for screenplay but IMHO both movies should've gotten best director and picture nods. If "Dunkirk" doesn't win for cinematography, I might throw something at the TV, the aerial scenes alone should all but guarantee a win in that category, plus all sound related categories (including best score).

shockingly, I haven't seen 1 movie on their best picture list...

Wanted to see Dunkirk and wish I did in a big theater.
Wife and I wanted to see 3 Billboards but it came and went so fast we didn't have a chance.

I liked Wind River a lot.

"Wind River" was terriic. I didn't know a thing about it, but when I saw that it was by the same people who made "Siccario" I wanted to see it.

I did like the aerial scenes in Dunkirk, but honestly, I didn’t care for the movie. I didn’t actually dislike it, it just didn’t do much fo me. I thought it fell short in a lot of areas and lacked focus.
I rarely care for the Oscars, they seem to give out awards based on the topic of the moment.

Yeah, thats what got me interested in seeing "Wind River" too, I hope Siccario 2 will be good as well!

I went to see "Logan" with friends from the comics profession and one of them pointed out one story detail that irked him: Logan and his group try to evade the villains who will stop at nothing. But they have nothing better to do and follow the invite of the farmer family thus sealing their bloody fate. And Logan still laments how he is tired of fighting IIRC. Also, when the water speculants/bullies arrive (my memories are somewhat hazy about their correct designation), Logan does the opposite of the correct thing. Not reacting to taunts and threats would have saved limbs and lives and in the future when the mutants traveled on and the farmers are alone again the bullies wouldn't return with a harsher response, one would hope.

Surely this flawed motivation/characterization doesn't spell best picture.

I see Blade Runner 2049 has been nominated for 5 Oscars. I hope it wins some.

Especially cinematography. I wish that it was nominated for score, but then again, Hans got one for Dunkirk so that's good enough for me.

RE: movie wins because of the topic at the time, I have a feeling that "Get Out" will win alot more because of the social climate these days rather than its merits as a movie.

I wonder if Tonya Harding will be at the Oscars? Anyway I thought Margot did a good job acting in that movie as did Allison.

I still can't believe that movie was made. I mean really, how many people now either remember or care about the whole Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding scandal from 1994?

I saw Nancy Kerrigan a good 10 years ago on York Beach in Maine, she still was smoking hot back then

What's next? A movie about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky?

I think alot of it was driven by Tonya Harding wanting her side of the story put out. Given what had happened and what she did or did not do her life as a skater, her only career path, is destroyed, and her image forever tainted both by her hand and relatives and by the image portrayed by the media. This movie was based on interviews with her and her ex-...but it also backfired on her in a way in that from these interviews because it also showed how contradictory and self-contradictory their stories were. Plus it was a way for the media to get back at her side of things for blaming them to begin with. Yet, she still shows up for the premiere and soaks up media attention so, I dunno maybe she's just an attention ho and/or is not smart enough to realize how she's playing into their hands, or she is smart enough to use it to make her money and notoriety again, who knows?

Tonya did comment on that in one of her interviews in which she said, c'mon, have respect for the office, they did that in the Oval Office!

This would be my guess. Something tells me that she's been in dire financial straits for a long time since she wrecked her skating career so any money she can still milk from this would very much welcomed!

Here is the interview if interested. After I finished reading it I felt so much smarter because, hey, I actually read a whole article from the New York Times!

Well again the Oscar nominations are not culturally or racially diversified enough this year.
- Missing are the Latinos and Asians.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2018/01/23/oscars-2018-diversity/1055923001/

Will they ever get it right?

- I know those voices in my head are not real, but man they have some good ideas.

- I never killed anyone, but I have read a large number of obituaries with great satisfaction.

- If I cannot make it to your funeral, I will certainly send a message indicating my approval.

- Most of my Friends are Imaginary

- Time is money, so I decided to sell my watch.

It's not the awards that are the problem, they shouldn't take ethnicity into account, just the work done. The production crew and casting in these movies is where they need to spread the wealth a bit.
The whole industry is based on discrimination anyway, it can't really be fixed. The awards are largely useless.

That's what the BET Awards are for.
