Hey guys..
I have just gotten through reading a book called Apache Sunrise (great book!), and it's basically all about the Apache Troop heli squadrons based out of Vietnam in 1969-70.
My one question involves a tactic they used involving a "Pink" Team as they called it, where Cobra gunships flew cover for smaller scout helicopters as they scouted out the terrain in search of VC and NVA bunkers. This tactic proved to be rather dangerous for the scout pilots, and for that reason, not many people ever signed up for that duty. Considering they had to fly so close to the ground, they were an easy target for incoming .51 caliber antiaircraft fire.

So I guess my question just comes down to this - do you think a tactic like that could be accurately represented in a simulation? I think it might produce some heart-stopping action...

Just curious! [Linked Image]

You should read Robert Mason's account of flying Helos in Vietnam in his book titled "Chickenhawk", on the Penguin Books paperbacks, a fantastic read.

He tells it like it is, no "red white and blue" stances, no "I feel sorry for what I did", just the plain ol' truth, a very refreshing book, I highly recommend it.

Aside from the gutsy and daring B-52 attacks from 30,000', well above any means of detection or response....much of the air war in South East Asia was 'heart-stopping action'.

The Cobra guys got down amongst 'em...as do the attack helo troops of today. My hats off to them.

Andy
