Young men... I know that rules out just about everyone here but pass it on to your sons and grandsons biggrin

1. Never shake a man’s hand sitting down.
2. There are plenty of ways to enter a pool. The stairs ain’t one.
3. The man at the grill is the closest thing we have to a king.
4. In a negotiation, never make the first offer.
5. Act like you’ve been there before. Especially in the end zone.
6. Request the late check-out.
7. When entrusted with a secret, keep it.
8. Hold your heroes to a higher standard.
9. Return a borrowed car with a full tank of gas.
10. Play with passion or not at all...
11. When shaking hands, grip firmly and look him in the eye.
12. Don’t let a wishbone grow where a backbone should be.
13. If you need music on the beach, you’re missing the point.
14. Carry two handkerchiefs. The one in your back pocket is for you. The one in your breast pocket is for her.
15. You marry the girl, you marry her whole family.
16. Be like a duck. Remain calm on the surface and paddle like crazy underneath.
17. Experience the serenity of traveling alone.
18. Never be afraid to ask out the best looking girl in the room.
19. Never turn down a breath mint.
20. In a game of HORSE, sometimes a simple free throw will get ’em.
21. A sport coat is worth 1000 words.
22. Try writing your own eulogy. Never stop revising.
23. Thank a veteran. And then make it up to him.
24. If you want to know what makes you unique, sit for a caricature.
25. Eat lunch with the new kid.
26. After writing an angry email, read it carefully. Then delete it.
27. Ask your dad to play. He won’t let you win.
28. See it on the big screen.
29. Give credit. Take the blame.
30. Write down your dreams.
31. Always protect your siblings (and teammates).
32. Be confident and humble at the same time.

Lots of good in there.

The Old Ways.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

33. What women SAY they want in a man, and what they are actually choosing, are often polar opposites.
34. The rules require cooperative behavior by everybody. Realize that there are situations where many people just won't cooperate, and that there are always some people who never do. Don't be the sucker who believes in rules, particularly not if their enforcement is spotty.
35. Respect is earned, and given by free will. You can't demand it.
36. Silence has never been consent.
37. We have two eyes, two ears, and two hands - but only one mouth. There's a lesson in that.

Gives way and suddenly it’s day again
The sun is in the east

Two suns in the sunset, hmph

Who the heck still does this today? I've not met anyone under the age of like 60 who does this.

Ha! Well, I’m close to your age cutoff so this may make your point but since the youngins all tease me about it you might as well too: I get clean white ones every Christmas. My one standing gift and about the only thing I’d “want.”

That could be a good poll. I bet I’d be the only one. Well, maybe og, Murphy and Bill Grant too. Chuck would but he’s too busy biking around the country and it’s hard to look cool on a motorbike with a hanky.

Thanks for that great post AirDrop!

This conversation actually reminded me about another long-lost manly art: shoe shining. I think I was about 15 years old when I last shined my dress shoes? lol

You forgot the most important one:

Make sure your brain is engaged BEFORE putting your mouth in gear !!!!!!!

(been caught out like that myself on a few occasions over the years)

I'm seriously glad you posted that. It just occurred to me because you wrote that that I never showed one of the boys how to shine shoes. Doh!!! I need to do that tonight!!

I have one pair of dress shoes left. They about 40 years old and have new soles and heels as needed over the years. I shine them every time I wear them....maybe 4 times a year now. smile

1. Never shake a man’s hand sitting down.
9. Return a borrowed car with a full tank of gas.
11. When shaking hands, grip firmly and look him in the eye.
12. Don’t let a wishbone grow where a backbone should be.
14. Carry two handkerchiefs. The one in your back pocket is for you. The one in your breast pocket is for her.
15. You marry the girl, you marry her whole family.
16. Be like a duck. Remain calm on the surface and paddle like crazy underneath.

31. Always protect your siblings (and teammates).
32. Be confident and humble at the same time.

So many good ones, but these are what I've experienced or applied. I especially hate the limp handshake. When we went home to the Philippines the last time, since I was already earning good money, I was handed the keys to the car to use as we pleased. I was never allowed to use the car before except when my mom needed to be driven somewhere as any other use of the car was a waste of gas. I once drove my dad to the airport early in the morning, drive back home, park the car, then take public transport to school. I drove PAST the school to get home from the airport. frown Funny how money changes things, huh? Anyway, when we left to return to the UK, I topped up the car with a full tank of gas. My wife later told me my mom rang to say thank you and was quite emotional.

The hankerchiefs bit I also used to do.... but being married for many years, I mainly bring a small face towel and it's mostly to wipe the youngest's nose smile Kids....

#15 is something I struggle with all the time. So much drama in her family and I have to sit back and just let it roll over me when my instinct is to get up and choke someone.

#26.... so many times.

#29, 31, and 32.... and #16 I use all the time at work. Got a reputation because of it. I'm now the go-to guy for bigger stuff, sometimes bypassing my manager to her annoyance smile

Some from recent talks in real life lately.

Your parents are not your friends, parents are much more than that. Don’t demote them to friend. Friends come and go.
Friends are not family, there’s nothing wrong with being good, loyal friends.
Be the kind of friend you would want.
The only family member you ever get to choose is your spouse.
