What are some cover songs that you think were actually superior to the original song? I have a few top picks that come to my mind,

Santana’s version of “Black Magic Woman” was far better than Fleetwood Mac’s IMO.

It's a very subjective thing, but if I had to pick one I would choose Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" originally by The Kinks.

The issue is not p*ssy. The issue is monkey.

To me, I prefer the Scorpions version of I can't Explain over The Who's version. Perhaps I'm biased as the Scorpions are one of my favorite bands.

I guess it comes down to which you prefer, a hard rock version or a 60s style version.

Just going by the videos, I'd give extra points to The Who's funky video.

As good as Led Zeppelin's original version of the song is, I prefer the Tool rendition.

Probably very controversial, and one I'm often unsure of, but I'll go with Nirvana's version of 'The man who sold the world'.
Bowie is amazing, as is his version of the song, but I often feel that the Nirvana version has more 'soul' somehow.

I may break the rules a little or get them in the wrong order but I recently discovered that Glen Campbell recorded "Highwayman". I also didn't know it was also a Jimmy Webb song and I think he recorded first. I can't say that I like it more but I like it a lot and its quite different from the more common Willie, Johnny, Chris and Waylon version. It utilizes some audio effects too giving it a different vibe.

I love the Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison but I really like Nazereth's rendition of "Love Hurts".

All respect to Bill Monroe I love Elvis and his version even if the Opry didn't back in the day.

WOW! I'm not one who usually get's surprised...but Coot got me! I had NO idea the "Love Hurts" was a cover!!! I always assumed Nazareth was the original and best (well, it is the best), and had never heard any other's come close. I gotta admit, Roy Orbison's version isn't bad if you don't mind slowing it down a bit. Well done Coot!

Might depend on your taste because the original is great, but...whoa...

I finally thought of one. Now, I love the Beatles but right now I'm having an 80's meltdown over here... biggrin

I forgot about Pat Benatar's "Helter Skelter" (from "Crimes of Passion"), also a good cover but not as good as Mötley Crüe's cover, IMO.

Songs I'm listening to this morning reminds me of my father getting home early from work and beating on my bedroom door...

I've only just been made aware of this although it's a few years old now.
The thread title is perfect, hence the necro...

Yes, that cover from Disturbed is quite good. Who knew that song could be made to rock so much? smile

On a related note, here is another great cover of a Simon & Garfunkel song:

“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

Ah yes, good point! My memory can be a bit foggy at times.
