Hi all
used to play IL2 back in the dayz, is this a better successor or is 1946 better?

Id prefer MP or a dynamic SP campaign

1946 MP is dying, BoX MP is growing, still too slowly but one can hope.
SP on this day is still better in 1946, but it will hopefully change this winter.

Now 1946 is VERY cheap, while BoX is more expensive (less so if you buy during sales, but still), so why not buy 1946 while deciding in march if BoX brings enough to justify the higher price ?

Finally there are videos all over youtube, just go have a look at a few of them. Graphics of 1946 unmodded are quite appalling, decent when modded, while BoX is next gen, still have room for improvement but far better than 46.

Been plying IL2 since first demo and still happily fly it from times to times on pacific/western front/mediterranean, but my current MP is 100% BoX, of which I bought 90% of published content so far.

Hope it helps.

Hey Dude, long time. BOX is still in it's infancy comparatively, lots of future left, and at the moment is pretty damn great. I just started rolling in it a few months back, especially in VR, it's akin to getting inside the sim. With the western part of the game arriving soon, it's good times, getting back in feels like the good old days of IL-2 all over again, thought that would never happen again.

Hey Nodak. Yea been a long time. I’m retired now so have time to play sims smile early retirement has some benefits.

I don’t have trackir or VR will that be a hindrance ?

Time to bust out the joysticks !

I moved on from 1946 permanently last year. I intend to try and sell my last few IL-2 expansions etc. this year.

BOX is better in a lot of ways. As much as I was holding on to IL-2 for my love of the PTO (which of course is years off with BOX), the antiquity of the game just made it not much fun any more.

Only three days left in this selling season. biggrin
Seriously keep me in mind if you do decide to sell them next year. I missed a few and still wouldn't mind getting them.
Which ones do you have?

Its hard to say. I have IL2 BOS but held off there and did not purchase the expensive addons with very little content and they are extremely pricey. I myself just enjoyed the multiplayer online aspect of the il2 series and none of these flight games have the numbers 46 use to have. they all have only 1-2 populated servers in il2 bos and the reason i do not play it much at all. Its like knights of the sky with different planes basically.

There is a new cliffs of dover patch by team fusion which i think is excellent but lacks players online just like il2 46 does these days. I have to admit as a simmer my favorite is DCS world which is pure sim and quality but so expensive for 1 plane. Its also does not have many online players like il2 bos mow etc.. So its difficult to say.

Warthunder has the largest online community and the most players, although its fun its not simlike at all but does have difficulty levels to make it appear more sim like so thats what i would recommend if you want to play any time of day or night when you are able to and have tons of online players. I rarely fly these days anymore because do not have the time and the greed of these people for a empty online game is not worth it to me although looks amazing in screenshots but the games themselves are pretty lifeless.

if you prefer sim i'd go with DCS world (not many online players/ servers similiar to il2 bos series)
If you want graphics with rubberband fms go with il2 bos bom bok but is extremely expensive for hardly any online players(only has a couple populated servers)
Best game for the cheapest price would be il2 cliffs of dover with the team fusion patch
il2 46 of course is fun but all the mod packs killed the online game and for most users too difficult to figure out show using which one which is why its dead on HL. Still goes down in history as the best flight sim with the most content every made so nothing will every compare to what oleg and team gave us. This spoiled us as well smile
Then for arcade online quick dogfight fun with tons of online players and nice graphics go for warthunder

Btw what is BOX?

I flew for a couple of weeks (free period) in Aces Hi. IMO that is the best combination of good 3d models, good graphics, good flight modeling and a good number of players online. Note I said "good", not "great". It's not perfect or the best in any one area but overall I think it's #1. I just can't justify the $15 a month right now.

I took BOX to mean "Battle of "X"" where "X" stands for any of the Stalingard/Moscow/etc series

Thanks F4u and thought BOX was some new game i did not hear about. Yeah i'm totally against these pay to play monthly fee games and will never support them (hurt them in the pocket). It would be nice to see 777 greedy burnin and DCS work together on one large multi era/theater sim all models in one game and of course for oleg to come back but that would just be a dream. I did buy DCS and BOS, I even asked burnin if I could purpchase bom and bok at a discount price since i only can play about once every few months or less in exhange for texture and template work but was refused so stopped playing completely. Guess they rather have no money then half for each addon with 1 plane varient they call 3-4 new flyables.

I'm not at all against the concept of monthly pay to play, it's no different to me than a monthly fee for an ISP or SatTV etc., I just can't afford it at the moment.

All the standard view controls are there, shouldn't be a show stopper to check out the game. If you have a copy already a huge patch and upgrade is about to hit with the official release of Kuban. Going to be a major rework of visibility and maps, although you may have to have the Kuban for it to work. If your looking to fly in company, your more than welcome to join us on weekends, usually a few of us from the old Frugals world days hook up. I'm looking forward to the P-39 and A-20, some Yankee rides, good stepping stone into the future P-38, can't wait to see that one in VR, could blow my mind.

Dude... How ya been.

I'd say 46 is a no brainer. It should be dirt cheap and with all the free add ons it is still in my opinion the overall greatest sim ever made.. even if it is dated.. I would also say the IL2 CoD is worth the investment.. and it too should not be too pricey. TF has the source code now so the sky is the limit. Having said that.. in my opinion.. I'd also say catch a sale on BoX... and get caught up in stages.. BoX is a good series. DCS is pretty nice too but it's just a different animal as far as the way it is marketed.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
