I would've thought 'tis the season to keep your doors locked all year 'round....

It's bad enough being stolen from, it's even worse knowing you made it easy for them by leaving a door unlocked.

I have cameras on both the front and back door as well as a four legged alarm system. wink I have never had a package stolen, and I get plenty of them. If it ever happens, I hope that they steal my dog food delivery so that they will be really disappointed. Living at the end of a cul de sac probably contributes to the security since there is only one way out and we (everyone on the street) tend to notice cars that don't belong.

One thing about having a long gravel driveway (off a gravel road) is that it's noisy, you usually hear crunching when a vehicle reaches the house. And even if I don't hear it (usually wearing portable headphones) the dogs will, even from the other side of the house, and they let me know.

Gives way and suddenly it’s day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset, hmph
Could be the human race is run

Indeed. Even though it is paved my dogs, at least the younger one, hear everything and let me know if they are coming into their territory. The older one was, unfortunately, abused and trained not to bark.

Simple low-tech, low cost ways to deter would-be criminals ...

Go to the Dollar store, and buy the largest non metal dogbowl you can find, along with some of those femur-sized chewing bone, and a "Beware of Dog" sign.
Distress the snot out of the dog bowl with a hammer and punch, along the top, making it look severely chewed on.
Place it and bone (that you whacked on with a hammer) somewhere in yard near front door. Hang sign in visible place.

Put chalk body outlines on sidewalk near door.

Go to Thrift store and buy old size 15 work boots, old Guns and Ammo magazines, and place them next to a chair on the porch.

Now, write out a note to leave near door:

"Bubba, Have gone to the store to get some more feed for Beast and Phantom.
Please don't let them dogs get out again! The Post Office called and said that the mailman would be ok, and promised that they would get a new mailman to come out.
I hope he doesn't lose that leg. Anyway I am going to pickup some ammo while I am out"

Bubba isn't there, the dogs are locked inside the house or back area and the homeowner is out to the store - there go the Christmas gifts on the front porch !

One thing that confuses me.... people leave deliveries on the porch out in the open? I've not bought very much but when I do, it either gets delivered straight to my hands if I am home or to a designated neighbor if I specified one on the delivery. Otherwise, the delivery guy keeps the package with him (if it requires signature and/or can't fit through the mail slot) and either tries again (depending on company, some try 2x or 3x) or leaves me a note to claim the package at a nearby depot.

This is not private citizens leaving things randomly. It is professional delivery drivers. There are areas that are "Driver Release" areas.

It means the driver can choose to leave the package inside a storm door, on a porch not seen from the street etc. and "release" it himself.

Many drivers will leave the package out in the open, plainly visible. They aren't really supposed to, but they do.

Also some scumbags will follow a delivery truck and observe.

Ice, you simply live in a "No Driver Release" area.

Maybe, but I doubt that Royal Mail and 3-4 other delivery services follow the same release area, if such a thing exists here?

Can't comment on that. I drove for UPS in the USA.

Where I live they just drop the package on the porch. Sometimes they ring the bell and sometimes they don't. The dog alarm lets me know either way.

Watched the local news a couple of days ago. To catch "Porch Pirates", as they called them, the local police have been putting a tracker in a laptop box and leaving it on the steps. Also in the news clip a guy has been boxing up his dog crap and putting it in Amazon boxes on the front porch and video taping them getting stolen then turning the video to the police. He said he's having a hard time keeping up with demand. He puts the crap in iPhone boxes and calls it IPooh. From the videos, it is definitely a dash and grab crime. No way they would notice gun magazines and such laying around. One guy is selling a box that sounds like a shotgun blast going off when they lift up the box. But the police said that's not legal because he is using shotgun blanks, but then haven't talked to the guy, yet. lol

I don't get people who leave their doors unlocked... We live in a decent neighborhood with a cop just up the street and I still wouldn't. Always lock my cars and doors, just not a trusting soul anymore.
As far as deliveries, I try to have everything delivered to my work, but even then that's not great. Freaking USPS will deliver on a Sunday from time to time and will just put the package in front of the door knowing we're closed on the weekends... rolleyes

I live the kind of neighborhood where people watch out for each other, and package theft is about zero, even though stuff gets just placed on porches in plain view.

My next door neighbor asked me to look for a package he was expecting and bring it into my house for safe keeping until he got home from work. As I delivered it to him that evening he was laughing, as he had been told three times that I had taken it from his doorstep.

OTOH, the makers of my development decided to name everything really close. So there's a Park Place Circle, a Park Place Way, and a Park Place Court. All three have the same house numbers, too. It's not unusual for a second delivery to happen in the evening, as someone finds the other guy's package delivered to one's house.

When tracking says an important package was delivered, but isn't, we don't wig out. We just go knocking on the other two doors to see if they got it instead.
