Another great rocket man gone. Bruce McCandless is probably most famous for testing the MMU backpack. It takes some courage to transport oneself 320 ft away from your spacecraft without a tether! He was also CapCom during the Apollo 11 EVA. "Okay, Neil, I can see you coming down the ladder now." This is probably the most famous photo of McCandless, out there in the vast universe.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Imagine having the self-assurance and guts to do that. Many people would say "I'd do that". Yeah. Right.
What kind of car is that? What does it matter? When I drive it, I'm Steve McQueen

Interesting trivia about Captain McCandless:
His father was USN Admiral Bruce McCandless Sr. McCandless Sr was present at Pearl Harbor on December 7,1941 and earned the Medal of Honor on November 13, 1942 during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.
His Grandfather, Byron McCandless, was also a USN veteran who retired as a Commodore. He earned the Navy Cross in WWI while commanding the destroyer USS Caldwell.
His Great Great Grandfather was outlaw David McCanles (name spelling changed later) who was killed by Wild Bill Hickok.
"In the vast library of socialist books, there’s not a single volume on how to create wealth, only how to take and “redistribute” it.” - David Horowitz
