It is nice to see CLOD Blitz in action. Of course there is still tweaking in the graphics and getting my HOTAS set and transferring my Campaigns, but it is just nice to see this loading on my desktop. I have to admit I haven't even started CLOD in a very long time as I have been waiting for this as patiently as possible. thumbsup Congrats TFS for all of your Dedication and Hard work and also Equal thanks to 1C for allowing TFS to use the source code. thumbsup I never thought I would see the day, but Miracles do happen. I already knew and believed this, but I never thought it applied to Flight Sims. biggrin These are crude pics but none the less they are some of the first pics of

Yep, lovely pics smile

If I get this right though, there is still many many things left to correct to make this really worthwhile for the SP side of things?

I've installed it, uninstalled the previous and original version, but now having to go through all the set up of controls again, (sigh) frown

Still, I shall give it another go... but I'm hearing that the mirrors don't always work, and the AI commands are still duff, (that was my biggest problem with it)...
I really wanted to give the campaign another go, but if the commands are still not working is it worth it?

Trooper, yes there are many things to correct, but at least they have everything in a non modded full fledged CLOD update, actually a Core Revision with no updates, that only takes one install. I would suggest looking on the ATAG Forums because many probs have already been solved. There is a pretty easy way to use your old INI file to setup your HOTAS from the old CLOD 4.312 Ini file, much easier than manually starting from scratch. ATAG Colander has created a fix to allow Desastersoft Campaigns to work and there is much more being looked at. The DirectX 11 optimizations seem to have helped my old AMD 965PhenomIIBE 3.4GB and GTX770 4GB to run at a steady 59FPS with Vsync on and no tearing. In some of the Campaign Missions it will dip down into the 20s-35. Not good I know, but there were over 80 planes advertised in the readme for the mission not to mention all other items(bofors,trucks...etc). Anyone that has an up to date System should be running CLOD very easily. The Mirrors have worked fine for me but they are a 10 FPS hit, so I leave them off. The Extended Clouds are the real problem, as they hit for 20FPS on my system, so needless to say, they stay off. I do have to finally admit that the explosions do look to "Cheesy" and I am hoping they will rework or even just return them to the previous original CLOD version. On the other hand, the scenery textures, which were redone , are spectacular. Overall I give them a "A" for reigning in all of the mods and compiling them into one released install-able version. The new Planes are definitely an Awesome addition(they need to fix the Hakenkreuz enabler, as it does not work anymore) and all of the previous Single Player and Campaign missions seem to work. Now it will be fun to see what they can do with the "AI", the "Sqaud Commands", and the new Theater. If they can get those 2 SP issues fixed and introduce the new Theater this next year, I think CLOD will become what it was always meant to be, One of the Top FCB Sims ever. I put my in game Graphics settings as the last picture(thumbnail) to show how my "Old" System can sustain mostly high settings and run a good 50- 59 FPS pretty steady on most all missions.

Looks great mate!
I see that they have now adopted the 'no swastika' line as per BoS... I don't know why, but that fact really gets my goat sometimes... why the hell they don't release region specific versions.
I shall have to find some decent skins to make the game historically accurate.

Due change in joystick ID (is no more Joystick0, 1, 2... is used device name, e.g. Saitek X-52-09D9945) map controls is need, but is possible assign only axes
and use keys/buttons from previous ConfUser.ini using Find and Replace in Notepad.

..but I'm hearing that the mirrors don't always work,

Mirrors work better now - but sometimes disappear or show land surfaces wrong (inverted). As they cost some FPS I prefer then "removed" (OFF).

AI commands still the same of previous version (maybe change in 5.0).

But since AI commands after Lutier "sweep under the rug" most of the initially planed extensive commands, what remais is:

Change formation
Formation space

Both work OK 100%.

Attack my target - this work if AI wingman's are near you and still have ammo (obvious), they confirm on radio - all at same time what result in cacophony, so I replace their "Attacking now" voice with static.
They will attack the nearest enemy plane ahead of your plane.

Since no other command related to AI remain after Lutier sweep, for what matter AI commands work. smile

I see that they have now adopted the 'no swastika' line as per BoS..

CloD never show swastika - for same motives of BoS, DCSW, but fortunately don't show that idiote fake swastikas of BoS, DCSW. rolleyes

A 3rd part sofware for enable swastika over skins are 32 bits software and no longer work for Blitz - 64 bits software.

Yes, BLITZ steep back or at least for side (towards War Thunder): Explosion, Fire, Leakages don't require changes - was the best seem in any CFS until now (IMO), could just tweak their colors.

I'm amazed, for a 2011 game, how well it holds up visually to the more modern BoS.

IMHO, that is because CLOD was way ahead of its time in its depth of Oleg's core engine, detail, number of objects and optimization of it all to run in a graphically beautifully rendered Flight Combat Simulation. I never was part of the original debacle because I knew my rig would not run it, but as I watched videos from some that had powerful rigs at the time and were running it, I was completely impressed and thought CLOD would be Superior to anything else available within a couple of years. Obviously it had tons of bugs, or maybe just unfinished work, and it was abandoned, but once TF started patching it and I bought it for 10$ I could see the great potential. I always said that given the Source Code that TF would fulfill Oleg's dream(their own dream, TFS) of seeing CLOD mature into one of the Best FCS ever. I personally do not compare BOX to CLOD or vice versus. I say this because IMHO they are just 2 different animals and I am so appreciative to have both being developed(now that 1C has gotten their act together with the BOX series) that I just want to support both Teams and enjoy the Excellent work they are producing. There are things in both that I am hoping for but overall for me as a SP person I am hoping both Teams will take on improving the AI and AI Command System because I believe doing this will bring in so many SPs that right now are disappointed in the Flight Sim AI in general. I am hoping both Teams will take a look at WOFF UE and Team Dialdos' IL2 1946's AI. IMHO they both have the most creative and interesting AI to fight right now.

I do know that another patch for Blitz 4.5 is currently being worked on. Not version 5 the Africa add on... So hopefully we may see some more improvements.
Have to say, I do love the external sounds of the aircraft... just listen to this Spit flyby, follow the link..

Yep, the sound is improved and does sound great. Maybe the in cockpit gun sounds are a bit off. I had really gotten used to the old 4.312 sounds and these new ones seem a bit subdued, but I like them regardless.

Great shots. I'm looking forward to installing this. Could you tell me how you get your image files to actually show up big in your post? SimHQs screenshot upload system seems to have changed yet again and all I could figure out is dragging my captures into the "Attach Files" feature but I don't know how to make large images like you. They just end up being a row of thumbnail slides at the bottom.

Very sweet thread, smashing pics !
And thx Blade for clarification on posting pics instead of just thumbnails. I had tried everything I could think of, and basically given up.

Check here Sir and maybe this will work for you as a DC.

ATAG Dynamic Campaign Thread

Here are a few more pics from a mission I was trying with the ME110 with a beautiful Death head skin.
CLOD Blitz just looks so good. Updated IL2 1946 BAT to the most current offerings and played around with it
a bit and it is really starting to show its age. I have to still love it because that is where it pretty much started
for me, but she is an old girl now and CLOD Blitz just blows her away in the graphics department. She still
reigns supreme in the content department but she is just getting old, just like me sigh

You can buy it on steam. My system is an old AMD Phenom II 965 BE running at 3.4Ghz, GTX770 4GB, Corsair Vengeance Memory 16GB with a few old HDDs. I
am looking to build a new one this year but until all this CPU Security crap gets fixed and new chips come out, I am just sticking with what I have.

Yeah the cockpits look almost as real as those 360 degree camera pictures of real world cockpits you find on the internet. I may finally install this puppy today. What is the install procedures like for additional skins and where do you get them?

Sorry for the stupid question, but how does this differ from IL2-BoS/BoM? Seems like Blitz is from the same guys as BoS/BoM?

i dont know the exact history but a quick rundown is -

CLOD (cliffs of dovers) predates BOS/BOM by many a year and was done by Oleg and his team, 777 then brought out the IL2 brand and name and now handles the dev work and does BoS/BoM
Team Fusion managed to get their hands on the CLOD source code (not sure how though, i think 777 gave it to them?) and they've been updateing it over the years and improving it, Blitz being their latest version

Pretty basic history but i think thats the main points smile

IIRC, CloD wasn't very well recieved by the fans, right?

I guess my question is --- if I have BoS/BoM, what does Blitz have to offer? More of the same?

i cant remember what the reviews where like CLOD first came out, but the general impression i got was "looked great, but not didnt play as great", i've not heard anything bad the TF fixes though.

I cant comment on what exactly it has to offer as i dont actually have either CLOD or BoS/Bom, i just know a little of the back story smile

Short version: BLITZ = too little, too late. - Despite all TFS work.

Long version:

Blitz was presented as new game (even in price), but but in essence is the same old CloD whit the same annoying bugs of original CloD - some "small" things, that will take only few minutes to be fixed*, like commands bad names (e.g. External View for two different functions), never receive attention. *I know because using Keygets DLL I fix this in "vanilla" CloD, just using Notepad - I know 0 of codding.

Or "bug" with German Übungsmunition, a 7,92x57 bullet that in CloD is able to destroy tanks, can be fixed changing with Notepad the words: "Concussion" by "Thermal", but...

https://www.tfbt.nuvturais.de/issues/803

Fire/smoke/leakages/tracers effects - that was very good in original CloD (IMO the best ever seem in CFS), became "cheese" and despite please some don't win all "heart and minds".

AI changing nothing... SP missions change nothing... nor new was added, a DCG include in 4.312 need be removed in Blitz due copyrights - is possible install manual, but it's still a downgrade.

A Facebook post - deleted after - suggest that Source Code furnished by 1C don't included all fixes (and broken's) made by Lutier after OM bail out - Blitz "epileptic" propeller animation, typical of CloD early versions suggest this, as well the lack of various basic sounds (e.g. landing gear) or plane parts "frozen" in the air.

Like CloD original, Blitz - despite the ~3 years development was released "raw".

Quote
I guess my question is --- if I have BoS/BoM, what does Blitz have to offer? More of the same?

Face what Bo'X now offer, BLITZ = [i]too little, too late.[/il]

Just is not "more of the same" but different, with plus and minus, if one care in fly in early Spit, Hurri in Channel area - but 'B of B' are not really there, may worth the $25.

CloD/Blitz still worth from MP point of view, for SP - despite show potential, the several flaws make the experience frustrating.

FYI - I a not a CloD hatter, have this game installed since 04/2011, enjoy much more a 'B o B' scenery than later war ETO (Normandy, Bodenplate, etc.) scenery. Know CloD issues very well, including pointing issues like the Noseart bug, and actually have 4 versions in my HDD (one, the early no longer working due Win10), but time has made me pessimist about. frown

This is still my "go to" sim when I want to fly WW2 airplanes. I picked up Stalingrad during the Christmas sale and it's okay, but it hasn't really grabbed me. I know that I'm not interested in the Russian Front, or in Soviet airplanes, but it looked so good that I had to try it out. But if it wasn't for the P-40 collector plane I also purchased, I might not be flying it at all. And that Stalingrad map is a bit barren. Might make a good North Africa scenerio when the P-39 and A20 come out. But right now, it is really boring to fly over.
I find the SP combat in CLOD just fine. The ai don't behave any differently then in just about any other flight sim I've used. I've gotten my butt kicked several times so they aren't all that bad. Unless I just completly suck! And I've never had the prop or flying parts issue that was mentioned. Runs perfectly for me.
But I have high hopes for Bodenplatte. And I'm still actually thinking of buying Kuban so that I can fly the Aircobra and Havoc.
But I still think that CLOD is an amazingly immersive flight sim experience.

This is a screen shot thread. Please leave it at that. CLOD still needs work, but what FS doesn't.
If easy changes can be made, then make them and share them with the community, but go start
your own thread to do it. One person's opinion of CLOD should not be used as the final say on it's
success or failure. CLOD is still in development, that in itself is a good thing. The CLOD Thread
Would be a great place to have this discussion. Thanks for your consideration.

Sorry for the hijack there Blade, no offense meant to you. Just wondered if this was worth getting considering I already have BoS and BoM and did not know what Blitz brought to the simming table. I've long since stopped buying based on screenshots... and that was a little inside joke between me and Sokol as he was poking fun at me in the DCS sub-forum.

Continue on with your beautiful screenshots! smile

Great shots, Blade. CLOD is a favorite. I've been absolutely immersing myself in Spitfire goodness, flying the CLOD Spit 1 and the DCS Spit 9.

Great shots as always Blade,I've recently downloaded the Malta pack for blitz and had an hour on it earlier..enjoyed it. Between blitz and WOTR I'm having great fun in the Hurricane.

Cheers pal

Yea, I have had a lot of fun with CLOD in general but that malta pack has been calling me, so that is what I have been flying. I really wish 5.0 would get here. It is do or die I fear for TF on this one, so I hope they get it right, especially the AI and SP Comms. If they do,
I think CLOD will have new life and a chance to expand. If they don't, I feel that would be the end. Hoping for the best! Glad you like the pics, I thought they were unique. yep

I have started flying the Hurricane by the cockpit gauges only and using the clickable switches in the cockpit for everything. What a blast, no zoom, just TIR5 zoom, and rad control in cockpit, boost cutoff in cockpit and trims on the throttle. The Hurricane handles great on the ground and in the air, a bit heavy(slow) but she turns on a dime. I was practicing fighting an BF109E1? and had a blast. The AI was surprisingly good and was climbing away from me and BNZ attacking me once I had to jump down on the deck. It was a good fight and I had the Hun damaged and smoking. Then ran out of ammo(not a good shot here) and so I high tailed it home and lived to fight another day. Haven't had this much fun in the Hurricane in years so I will continue on and try to master her in CLOD. She is beautiful in a Brutish way.

Blade, that's the way I've always flown the sim. It connects you with the airplane. Gives you a much better feeling of actually being in it. I do it with DCS, also. I try to go to my keyboard as little as possible. I think that this is a terrific sim. It gives me an "I'm really there" feeling.

Thanks Trooper!

I hear you pooch. I have always used a dashboard in some sense or another rather than just look at the actual gauges. It does make it a lot more realistic and gives a sense of what the real WWII pilots had to do to make their planes last through the battles they were in. I wish Devs would come up with some way to make contact spotting easier. My monitor is 2560x1440 and my eyesight is not the greatest, even with my reading glasses. I like how someone made a mod for BOS that makes the labels very small triangles. Contact spotting is one of the reasons I don't fly MP anymore. I got tired of being wiped out and never seeing the enemy, LOL. Here are a few more. I have to say that IMHO CLOD is the best looking and FM flying sim that I have. yep Enjoy!

Way over in Perth, Western Aus...
Lovely shots Blade.

How did you get the historical markings? Is there a mod for it yet? Or do you have to DL skins individually and apply them yourself?

I haven't had a flight since they got rid of the historical markings.

Thanks mdwa.
All with HK are downloads. I believe you can open any mission in the editor and insert custom skins if you want them in custom missions. The default cross are like the one on the 110 with the Shark mouth.
I am still hoping that someone will come up with a way to change the default crosses out for the real HKs like modders have done in TGBS.

Lovely sceenshots Blade_Meister, but even after all this time the aircraft still look like they have been dipped in milk. What is it with the shaders in this sim? It's like the aircraft skins are using the same shaders as might be used to show haze in the distance. Don't get me wrong I love CoD and am waiting impatiently for Team Fusion 5, but the way the sim represents the planes is odd and annoying. It shows particularly well in your second and final screenshots of the Hurri, against the tree foliage and the lighthouse.

That skin is literally called "Heavy Weathering with Markings". That is not your typical skin. While I respect your opinion, I completely disagree with itEdit: After thinking on what you said, I can kind of agree, maybe it is some of the shiny reflections? Otherwise I can't really put my finger on it, but the "dipped in milk" description just keeps coming to mind and I can kind of see it. I have to say though that it never bothered me as I really think CLOD always had great potential. I got it, they look like the chocolate easter bunny! I am just hoping to no end that TFS gets the Core fixes right and really hits a Home Run with 5.0. To me, IMHO, CLOD has always looked like one of the most realistic sim presentations of these war birds and the English/French landscapes. Maybe that is just me, but that is my 2 cents worth. Thanks for your comments. Here are some more traditional cleaner skins.

Looks like they've been dipped in milk? I think it's still one of the best looking combat flight simulators out there. The only disappontment I have with it, is that 5.0 is taking way too much time to come out. I want cannons on my Spitfire!

The milk dipped effect is an attempt to show the light grey aluminum surface wearing off. But in my opinion, (Yeah, who cares about my opinion?) having the RAF fighters overly weathered wouldn't be historically incorrect. At the time, these were practically brand new airplanes. Actually, a lot of them WERE brand new airplanes, only a day or so out of the factory and quickly thrown into combat. Many were shot down on their first sortie without ever having the time to look worn and weathered. They wouldn't look like that during The Battle, I would think.

So what you are saying is you don't like my pictures because they are Historically incorrect? Well for you information Mr. Pooch, this is Hurricane #1, the first none prototype ever built. She was pushed to the back of the lot in early 39 after exhaustive testing and training of many a rookie pilot. She then fought in the Battle of Dunkirk and stopped jerry from slaughtering our boys before the evacuation. She returned home for a short lived second retirement. Because of the dire situation in the BOB she was pushed back into service without a thought to what she looked like. She is a work horse not a show horse Sir. While all the young fillys were being rolled off the assembly line all shiny and new, she has been champing at the bit to play her part in this second struggle, the BOB, and you berate her on her looks! Shame on you Sir, she has downed a many a Hun and is proud of her rugged looks. She embodies the enduring struggle for the BOB and the unbreakable resolve of the common folk to break the back of jerry! Looks she might not have, but an Iron will she has! Good Day Sir! cuss

A by note: Much to your relief I am Sir Mr. Pooch, she now resides on display in the Science Museum ‘Flight’ Hall South Kensington, London wearing genuine 615sqn markings with a shiny new coat of paint! We hope this meets your approval SIr!

Thanks for the amuniton MajorMagee. winkngrin

The words "I do not like these pictures" was never written, uttered nor insinuated by this poster. As a matter of fact, your screenshots are, probably, the best I have seen of Cliffs of Dover.

Hawker Hurricane I ‘L1592 / KW-Z’
c/n W/O 5422.

This early Hurricane fought over Dunkirk and in the Battle of Britain. I believe that this is the only existing Hurricane to retain fabric covered wings.

Saved by the Air Historical Branch in 1944, it joined the Science Museum in 1954. It is on display in the ‘Flight’ Hall wearing genuine 615sqn markings.

Odds and sods, mainly from the stock 'Fat Cats' RAF campaign complete with its imaginative but unconvincing backstory, and its replacement 'redux' version with more credible backstory, both apparently set in the lesser-known Minor Skirmish of Britain...

Taking a little brake from BOB II I see. Just out for a bit of sight seeing or are we flying a particular Campaign? You seem on a bit of an odd Russian Roulette ramble of pictures SIr?

CloD did an update last night and wiped all my preferences, grrrr! Only found out afterwards what I should have backed up. Time go go a-fiddling with the control key setup again and map the awful MP console/window thingy. Haven't played Clod Blitz since completing this and tend only to fly a little before losing interest again: https://combatace.com/forums/topic/92980-battle-of-the-battle-of-britain-sims/

CloD Blitz may be the Dog's Danglies for MP, but for SP it's the Curate's Egg - 'good, in parts' ie not good really. Radio command menu mostly non-functional. R/T traffic present and working, but the scripting mostly sh!te: 'I'll fly your wing', pass the sick bag please. Scale too small. AI mostly Artificially Dumb (AD rather than AI?). SP campaigns with broken or badly-scripted missions (LW, mostly) or imaginative but essentially awful briefings (RAF), the redux ones a little better on that score but still bearing only a passing resemblance to 'the Battle'. AAA (Awful Anti-Aliasing) instead of AA. No (easy) way to turn on labels in-game. Need complex engine management to get Spit/Hurri negative G cut-out.

As Tim Stone said of the original, ok if you can regard it as a nice collection of flyable virtual warbirds, with a limited air combat capability and a map, something between DCS and a 'proper sim'. As the focus seems to be on expansion, it's not clear how far the many SP limitations will be addressed in future.

Edit - since this is a screenshot thread...

Take THAT, you beastly Hun!

And THAT!

[Linked Image]

And the rest of you, stay away from my convoy, or you'll be for the chop, too...

[Linked Image]

(all three pics from the RAF Redux SP campaign, if I recall right)

Seriously, you couldn't not like CloD for its planes, and occasionally for its air combat, but as a serious SP sim of the BoB....

Some pics from the first Spitfire mission from the RAF Redux campaign, which I will have to replay because the sim, as well as ignoring its own V-synch settings, zonked my video card before I got to RTB and end the mission.

Ready to roll on a test flight with my new squadron leader, with CloD demonstrating its delight in cluttering the airwaves with stuff the boss should have told me before we were about to take off from Manston...

[Linked Image]

I thought from the briefing that I was supposed to follow the boss, an impression re-inforced by our relative positions on the ground. But hey, it wouldn't be CloD if missions played out as expected, so after waiting for ages I decide to crack on...

[Linked Image]

My take off was pretty awful, so I decide to do a quick circuit and end what looks to be a fairly boring sortie with the minimum of fuss. Seen here banking around Ramsgate on my crosswind leg...

[Linked Image]

I'm not sure what this airfield is - Ramsgate? - but it isn't Manston...

[Linked Image]

I decide to beat it up on my way back...

[Linked Image]

...before rejoining the Manston circuit...

[Linked Image]

However, the mission designer isn't going to let me off so lightly. A radio message reports incoming Ju88s. I can't turn on labels, the comms menu is mostly non-functional, and the map icons are staying switched off due apparently to CloD's penchant for ignoring settings changes. Anyhow the Huns are there somewhere, so I orbit dutifully and wait for them to appear. Which they do, coming in low from the east.

[Linked Image]

I slip in behind the last one and let him have it.

[Linked Image]

I get hits but not enough. Bits fly off the Junkers and he pulls up out of formation for a while, before settling back down

[Linked Image]

I take some hits from the bomber, as if the gratuitous advice on the radio, presumably from the boss, isn't bad enough...

[Linked Image]

My nose pierced by return fire, I then run out of ammo, and hear and see me telling myself that...I have run out of ammo.

[Linked Image]

By this time, my intended victim is flying on merrily as if nothing much had happened.

[Linked Image]

My hopes rise as I see him dip earthwards, but are dashed when he starts climbing back up after his comrades again, as they run in to bomb Manston...

[Linked Image]

I decide that I might as well do as someone is bidding me and land now, dodging any bomb craters. I'm surprised as I come in to see Manston apparently undamaged...

[Linked Image]

...and even more surprised to see that the Redux campaign's message system is telling me that I got a kill. That Hun bomber must have pranged, after all.

[Linked Image]

Before I can land, my PC prangs, the screen going black and the speakers emitting a gentle buzzing sound, which requires a cold restart to silence. So I'll probably have to fly the freaking mission again. Perhaps this time, V-synch will be working.

It's the Battle of Britain, Jim, but not as we know it smile

Those screens are absolutely fantastic. I actually have no issues with CLOD as a combat flight simulator. The combat seem very real to me. Few games have caused me to feel as though I've been in an air battle better than this one. I've read that the graphics are getting old, the AI isn't any good, it sucks....etc.. But I've had a completely different experience. I'm very much looking forward to 5.0 and hope that it's released while I can still hold a joystick.

Same here, as a SP person I'm waiting for 5.0 before I start playing again though... If they don't sort out the radio commands and the AI though it may be the nail in the coffin for me.
They do say there are far more SP people than MP players, so I hope they improve that side of the game... otherwise it may be end-ex for CloD frown

I wish I could share Coot's enthusiasm and hopes for the future, but every time I decide to fly another SP mission in CloD, I come away with a glass half empty sort of feeling. Or maybe that the glass is full, but about three-quarters is something decidedly unpalatable smile

Individual air combats can be fun, but for me are spoiled by stutter when an RT message plays, the fact that so many of them are nonsense (wonder if locating and deleting some culprits like 'I'll fly your six' would reduce stutter; failing that i'll install on an SSD at some point). And the audio is nearly inaudible, the comms menu mostly broken, the scale of ops is very small, the missions and other things seem often to be broken. I keep going back, hoping it'll be different, which only goes to show I meet that definition of insanity attributed to Einstein.

Case in point, 29th August mission in the RAF Redux campaign. The briefing talks of a maximum effort but the raid we're sent to intercept from Manston is...'TWENTY-plus'!

[Linked Image]

First play-through after the usual pre-take off RT chitter, the first two Spits leave but mine won't move, like I've got invisible chocks or my tyres have been superglued to the turf. No amount of fiddling with CloD's options menu seems to help.

[Linked Image]

In desperation, second time around I hit the autopilot key, which at least works. Really, it shouldn't be this hard.

[Linked Image]

I take back control as I follow the boss out to sea over Ramsgate. In views like this, I'm always distracted by the knowledge that those piers are going to disappear from view any second, draw distance being short despite maxed settings.

[Linked Image]

The boss reports incoming Dorniers. The report itself is very well done (despite the inaudible audio, which might as well be completely turned off to end the associated stutter), although he hasn't spotted escorts yet. Still he must have much better eyesight than me because I can see absolutely nothing of the enemy.

[Linked Image]

By the time I can. the embarrassingly small scale of the raid is apparent - six bombers (or maybe nine, if another kette was out of screenshot to the left) with a small clutch of 109s for escort. At least they react with convincing aggression.

[Linked Image]

About this time somebody reports spotting 109s, but by that point we are already engaged with them.

[Linked Image]

I chase one of the Messerschmitts and get some hits. Breaking off after he starts trailing thin white smoke, I lose him briefly and have to avoid an attack when tracer zips over my canopy. When I next see my target, he's going down in a shallow dive, and ends up crashing into the sea. At which point I start hearing (or rather, seeing) some of those embarrassing 'I'll fly you wing!' messages, complete with more stutter.

[Linked Image]

First one and then the other of my section rejoins, while the virtual airwaves start to fill with courses and heights. Is the fight over, are we supposed to reform, or what?

[Linked Image]

I can see no-one but my section so decide to go home to Manston. I can't tell them to land so it's every Spitfire for itself. Despite being as usual denied permission to pancake - those menu options at least work - I can't be bothered doing a full circuit so I make a quick approach, watching out for any other traffic. I'm coming in from the west, the same direction as our departure. Even now, somebody is still on the blower giving courses and heights.

[Linked Image]

As I land another Spit is buzzing by, and somebody is reporting 109s. I'm on my own and have no idea from what point the bearing to the enemy is being taken. Map icons, paths etc have so far resisted every effort I have made to turn on any of them, so I can't even 'cheat'.

[Linked Image]

As I taxy along looking for somewhere suitable to turn off, another Spit lands in the opposite direction. Glad to have avoided a collision, I am also pleased to be awarded a kill (meeting the mission completion goal) and can therefore quit. IIRC the debrief stats confirmed my 109 shot down, another damaged (by me or not is unclear), and a Spit from our squadron lost, along with two Hurricanes from a squadron I never saw. 'End Ex' indeed - 'No duff!' Until I feel the insane desire again, to try one more time...

In my book, CloD is just about acceptable for the odd tussle, and is possibly the proverbial dog's danglies for multi-player, but as a single player sim of the Battle of Britain, it's not at all satisfactory. So near, and yet, so far.

Well I solved the sound stutter following an ATAG forum poster's suggestion, installing CloD Blitz on an SSD (actually using Steam's settings options to move it, which was easily done using the instructions here... https://www.howtogeek.com/269515/ho...another-drive-without-re-downloading-it/ ).

To celebrate, here are some screenies from the last mission before the move (the RAF Redux FW200 Condor interception)...

[Linked Image]

I have no idea how the R/T traffic degenerated into this nonsense, but I suspect it's a lead in to the infamous Spitfire Girl mission...

...and the first gloriously sound stutter free mission, afterwards (the stock single mission intercepting a low-level bomber attack)...

Thanks Trooper.

The last CloD update seems to have broken the single mission, intercepting Heinkels bombing London. Before, the bombers stayed reasonably well in formation. As they seem to do in other single missions eg if substituted for the Stukas in the Hawkinge interception. Now, the Heinkels heading for London break formation more wildly than in that impressive but unreal sequence in the BoB movie. After that, they are all over the sky, climbing wildly, rolling left and right, going in all directions at once. I know there are accounts of single Dorniers during the 'Battle of France' attacking and even trying to dogfight with a Hurricane, but this is ridiculous! And their gunners seem more accurate than before, regardless of G forces.

Still, I managed to get some decent pics.

I say! Would you mind awfully not doing that?

'Cut the grass'? Don't you know there's a war on? smile

As for the clock, it's probably that deranged fellow running the London Marathon. He must have got really badly lost, because he finished yesterday, nearly 79 years later. It's all over the news, this side of The Pond: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-48084878

Nice plane, the Beau, in a chubby sort of way. I remember a story from my late dad; he was working on a Beau (post-war) with the engines running, standing under a wing. Suddenly there was a serious jet of fire back from the exhausts, unburnt fuel or whatever. His mates thought he was a goner. But when they ran over, he was standing with his head up inside the nacelle, having avoided getting frazzelled and wondering what all the fuss was about. Still, that is maybe why he ended up on ASR launches, after that smile

lol nice story lima

My gramps was a fitter on Lancasters during WW2. I wish I had gotten some war stories from him before he passed

He talked about dam busting and the development of the dam buster bombs. I have no idea if he was involved in this or not

My dad was also a fitter and had a Lanc story too, Bisher. One day, when he was stationed at RAF Ballykelly, he decided to visit the NAAFI van, which was across the runway from where he was working. He had access to a bike and the coast seemed clear, so rather than going the long way around, he cycled across the runway. As he was sitting at the counter drinking his cuppa, a Lanc came in and landed. It braked to a halt opposite the NAAFI van and the navigator, sent by the pilot, got out, came over and took Dad's number. Apparently the Lanc had to abort its first approach because some bloke had cycled straight across the active runway. smile

Scenes from one of the stock single missions, an air start with a flight of Hurricanes intercepting a raid headed for Manston.

This is one of two Ju88s I damaged...

[Linked Image]

...by the look of the next pic, he's the one I was afterwards credited with destroying...

[Linked Image]

...but trailing what looked like oil and glycol, it was time to go home, after that...

[Linked Image]

...'home' in this context meaning anywhere I could get down, a choice between Ramsgate and Manston itself, my engine conking out as I headed for the latter...

[Linked Image]

...I just about made it beyond the airfield boundary, and to cap it all, I couldn't get the undercart down. At least, both pilot and aircraft (after a bit of TLC) will be re-usable...

I'm not sure how it happened, but after another 'Updating Steam..' session I'm back at the start of my RAF Redux campaign. Not a massive problem since as mentioned earlier, the first couple of missions are not unrealistic and fun to (re-)play....

...although I think the inline-engine Dornier 215 was commonly used as a recce bird, and the Do17Z version available in CloD would have been a more authentic choice for the exciting low-level raid on Tangmere in mission 1. I have no idea why I (Luton 9) am being warned for firing on a friend when none were near my line of fire...none that I saw, anyway.

[Linked Image]

I got two of them and made it down afterwards, managing to land on wheels rather than radiator this time...

[Linked Image]

In the Channel convoy mission after that I had to plough up the grass at base after being damaged by this Stuka. For ages he wasn't credited as a kill despite being an obvious flamer and not shared with anyone.

[Linked Image]

Also strange was that the debrief credited me with one Stuka destroyed and another one 100% damaged. Still it was a reasonably enjoyable and not unrealistic mission, even the third or so time around.

Next RAF Redux campaign mission is the one that has me and the CO tasked to fly east to cut off some retreating Huns. Apart from # 1, about all the mission briefings are based on the wrong approach - by and large, you should just get the order to scramble, then get your tasking on the radio from the Sector Controller, on the radio. Which is near inaudible in CloD at any sound setting, so you would rely on the text display. But still, it should be possible to write a scripted campaign that produced a realistic Battle of Britain experience. This isn't quite it, being an improved version of the stock campaign, in which it is moderately successful.

Here we are taking off from Tangmere, I'm flying on autopilot, which uses flaps on take off, not generally done in Hurricanes.

[Linked Image]

Cleaned up and climbing, we make a gradual turn to the east. The Blitz landscapes are quite good but there are rather a lot of tree-rows rather than hedgerows. Note that the rectangular red doped patches over the guns are unbroken, indicating we have not yet fired them.

[Linked Image]

On autopilot, I can escape the chore of formation-keeping and yet stay close. You can't see it here of course but in turning, the CloD AI uses a lot of coarse rudder, in the Il-2 tradition. On top of that, AI formation leaders turn with much less bank than everyone else, which looks odd.

[Linked Image]

Here I am breaking off after setting on fire a single retreating Heinkel. The boss had already damaged it, but I got the credit. I missed the subsequent action due to having to RTB from return fire damage and just about made it back, missing the subsequent action - sorry, boss!

[Linked Image]

Here we are taking off, having unrealistically been briefed before takeoff, again. This time the job is to intercept an incoming sweep by aircraft unrealistically identified, well out over the Channel, as Messerschmitt 110s.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

At least CloD can put a full twelve-plane squadron into the air, in realistic close formation of four sections or vics. On autopilot there is plenty of time to admire the CloD visuals, which are rather nice apart from aircraft being 'jaggy' beyond abouty 200 yards.

[Linked Image]

And the Dark Earth is a bit brown for my taste - there's a reason the RAF Temperate Day Scheme of the period was known at the time as 'sand and spinach', rather than 'soil and spinach' (or a less polite alternative).

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I flew in autopilot right up until contact. The boss calls out the sighting long before I can see anything on the screen, but sticking with the others, we end up flying head on into an oncoming shower of 110s.

[Linked Image]

I was credited with destroying this one, plus another damaged. The former, and getting back to base, earned me a mission success, these being the default criteria in the Redux campaign.

[Linked Image]

The next mission has another unrealistic preflight briefing - head out over the Channel and assist 111 Squadron - another Hurricane outfit - who are in trouble with 109s. The boss doesn't bear grudges, for I'm promoted to lead a flight, in this sortie. It turns out this means a section (three aircraft) not a flight (six). Apart from 'help me', the wingman commands don't work I think, but it helps knowing there are two other aircraft who will follow you about, when they're not doing anything else.

I got this 109 and another damaged, without being hit in return. We met the mission target of saving most of 111 and me getting home. Neat damage model - note that what is likely to be glycol coolant is clearly escaping from a damaged underwing radiator on the Messerschmitt.

[Linked Image]

Here I am with one of my section, who rejoined on the way back. The R/T inaccurately has my callsign as Luton 9, when it should be Green 1 (or whatever the right colour is for the section I am now leading).

[Linked Image]

I think I haven't long to go before the awful Me110 ferry flight mission, but so far - apart from inaudible R/T, some crap radio chatter like 'I'll fly your wing', the mostly broken command menu, unrealistic preflight mission briefings, and a dearth of what should be the default Battle of Britain mission by August - a sudden scramble, after which you are vectored by the Controller on the R/T to intercept an incoming raid of at least Gruppe strength plus close escort if there is one - I'm finding this moderately enjoyable. Yes that's a lot of 'aparts' but as Sokol1 put's it, 'That's CloD!'

Nice mission 33lima. One thing that is bothering me more and more is the spinner on the CLOD Hurricane. Someone said in one of these threads that the spinner on the WOTR Hurricane is to pointy, but the more and more that I look at real Hurricane pictures the more that I think OBD has it much closer to reality in WOTR than CLOD does. CLOD's spinner is actually way to dull. Looking at your silhouette picture above really makes this glaringly obvious. I wonder if TFS has noticed this and will fix it? Don't get me wrong, your pics are awesome. winkngrin

It all depends on what Mk of Hurri, and what type of prop is actually fitted.

Though preservation has come along a lot, preserved aircraft are always to be treated with caution as a source, compared to contemporary photos. Some preserved Hurricanes were reportedly fitted with spinners from Constellations!

The 'pointy spinner' with a 3-blade prop is available in Blitz as well as in WotR. It represents the second type of prop fitted to Hurricanes, the De Havilland variable pitch prop. This came after the original two-blade wooden Watts fixed-pitch job. During I think it was August (1940), the DH props were converted to constant speed units, the company doing this in advance of an order from the government, with one prominent company executive doubting they would ever get paid for the work. The story is available online somewhere.

The third prop fitted to the Hurricane is the one with the bulbous spinner, the Rotol This was the first constant-speed prop fitted to Hurricanes, before the DH ones were converted. I think the CloD bulbous spinner one is actually a little undersized, if anything! This spinner was actually designed for the Spitfire, which had a bigger backplate than the Hurricane's nose. Mk I Spits with pointy spinners (and 3-blade airscrews) will have the DH prop.

Hurricanes started to get the Rotol with the spinner that was actually designed for the Hurricane about the time the Hurri Mk2 was introduced. This is the more bullet-shaped spinner seen nowadays on LF363, which is a MkIIc, despite the absence of the proper armament for that mark in BBMF service.

I believe similar spinners, but with less curve to their profile when viewed from the side) were fitted to Canadian-built Hurricanes - some of which can be seen in wartime pics with no spinners at all, just a nice, shiny prop hub (eg in Ian Allan's 'Hurricane at War' by Chaz Bowyer).

The WotR designation of 'Hurricane Mk I late' is I think an invention, rather than an accurate designation. I don't know whether its prop represents a two-speed DH, or one modified to constant speed. But in your WotR pic above, it looks like it has the distinctive blades of the Rotol prop, but with the 'pointy' spinner of a DH, which I don't think would be accurate. I think a prop with that type of blade would be a Rotol and in the BoB era, should - in general if not invariably - have the bulbous spinner seen in the CloD pics, not the pointy one. The blades actually seem to have the Rotol company emblem (the outermost one on each blade) so yes, IMHO, for a BoB MkI, the WotR Hurri should actually have the bulbous prop spinner. Or the pointy spinner but with the more slender DH/Hamilton Standard type prop blades. Not accurate, that combination of the angular Rotol blades and DH 'pointy' spinner.

Hi Peachy9, not sure what you are trying to do here. If using SimHQ uploader for a pic I think it must be under 2mb, IIRC ? If you are using a host such as Imagur, then you can just post the BBC link right in your post. Hope this helps.

After all of these years of waiting, Desert Wings Tobruk is finally added to CLOD Blitz! Congrats TFS and 1C!!! Thank you both for hammering out the deal to make this day possible!!! My download and install was seamless and the only problem I experienced was losing my sound in Windows 7 after installation of DWsT. Restarting my computer remedied that quite quickly. All of my skins, single player missions, campaigns and other addons were left intact and usable upon completion of installation. It took less than 15 minutes to finish the download and installation. I took my first flight in the Martlet, of course, and after all of these years of waiting since PF came out, I was finally back in a Wildcat\Martlet cockpit! Hallaluya!!! I always loved this PF plane and had endless hours in it fighting Zeros, shooting down Jap bombers and trapping back on my carrier. This new Martlet feels rock solid and she handles as smooth as silk. Going to have to put in some hours in her before going online, but all of that in good time.

It felt so good to be back in the office of this Barrel Chested terror of the skies once more!

It felt really good to get back into CLOD and IMHO she looks more impressive than ever and runs even better than before. I am looking forward to exploring more and getting into the combat aspect to see how she performs under a load. There is more new single player content than I was expecting and I am hopeful that people will use the ME and create even more SP content. Thank you TFS for all the years of hard work and to 1C and Jason for helping to make this possible. Desert Wings Tobruk is working well for me and I am looking forward to exploring all of the new content and experiencing the improvements you have made.

Yes, once I panned the cam around, what he saw was quite disturbing to say the least! I shall never forget it myself and I have had to sleep with a small light on ever since. eek2

ChristmasConvoy

Mission Report: 12/25/1940 0830 hours:

It seems the Luftwaffe's High Command just couldn't let it go for one bloody day! With a chilly temperature of only 32 degree on this snowy morning, Göring himself probably gave the order to send up his boys in order to hunt down our lone convoy sailing on this day,.... this Christmas Day! While the Jerry pilots and crews toasted a Merry Christmas morning during their briefing, the armourers were fast at work fitting their Ju88s with eggs and readying their bombers for the mission at hand. It seems the Huns were given the task of delivering these not so welcome presents to the boys sailing three of our tankers from Southend-on-Sea to Margate.
[Linked Image]

Being the most recent bloke assigned to No. 804 Naval Air Squadron, I was up at sparrow chirp to join FAA Flt Lt. Terry 'Dick' Stapleton in flying the convoy escort mission scheduled for this morning. With snow all about and a brisk westward wind blowing, we set out on our mission. I am FAA Plt Off Paul 'Papa' Davies and I celebrated my 29th Birthday just three weeks prior to today. I volunteered in May of this year and was accepted for flying training as an Acting Pilot Officer in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. I am one of the few Scots here in No. 804 NAS and my being older than most of these boys in the Squadron riled their witty Englander humor concerning my age, and consequentially they came up with the moniker 'Papa', which I was tagged with shortly after my arrival. All of the carrying on amongst the boys was in good sport and most of the time conducted with all due respect,...well,... most of the time. Almost all of the pilots here in No. 804 NAS have a nickname hung on them sooner or later, but 'Pappa' would show these boys, and the Jerrys, that I have a steady hand, a fierce heart and a keen eye to bring my arms to bear on any that dare cross me!
[Linked Image]

The day after completing my FAA training and receiving my Royal Navy pilots wings, only two weeks ago to the day, I found myself at Rochford Aerodrome for my first posting right outside the small town of Rochford England. Here I began flying with No. 804 NAS FAA under Fighter Command and this was the official beginning of my FAA career. I dreamed of flying a Hawker Hurricane, or possibly even a Supermarine Spitfire, only to be assigned to a Martlet. A 'Yank' plane at that! One has to raise the undercarriage with a hand crank for God's sake! I must admit though, the little buggars are fast and turn quite well, but this lass is no Spitfire. She might have a go at a Hurricane, but a Spitfire on full bore would have her in a spot and gone for six as quick as you please!
[Linked Image]

Quickly after takeoff, not even a few hundred feet off the ground, Dick found that his undercarriage hand crank was jammed and as a result he could not raise it in the least. He notified me on the R/T and immediately returned to Rochford Aerodrome which left only me to fly the convoy escort solo. I quickly said a Prayer to The Man Upstairs asking Him to go with me, protect me and guide my attacks to make my aim true should I encounter any Jerrys.
[Linked Image]

The Huns had already beaten us, of course us was simply me now, to the punch and set their sights on delivering their unwanted gifts quite early this morning. Flying from France across The Strait of Dover at wave top height, they passed Margate only three miles off the coast and prepared to enter the outer reaches of The Thames Estuary. Each bomber began their slow climb to 1500 feet, and all to soon with the convoy spotted and eggs prepared, each of the three Ju88s readied themselves to target a single tanker. Just minutes later one of the Hun bombardiers called out, 'Bomben weg!', as the first set of bombs was released from his Ju88.
[Linked Image]

The second Ju88 dropped his bombs only seconds after the first, and each of these JU88s narrowly missed their target while beginning to encounter light AA fire from the escort cruiser and each of the tankers. The Tommies manning these ack-ack guns were crack shots and the Huns were experiencing some very close explosions! Having delivered their eggs, each of the Junkers hastily turned towards France, one sustaining a hit to its' port wing and suffering a fuel leak.
[Linked Image]

The final Ju88 sought to line up its' target as far below the tanker's Captain shouted for his helmsmen to perform an emergency starboard evasive maneuver with the intention of thwarting the Jerry's efforts to sink his ship. 'Bomben weg!' called out the Jerry bombardier upon dropping his eggs. This last Jerry pilot quickly turned for home as he knew the RAF would be along in quite a hurry. His eggs also narrowly missed the deck of the last tanker. Not one of the three Ju88s had achieved their mission goal and now it would be my turn to deliver the lot a little Christmas Cheer!
[Linked Image]

I spotted three Junkers Ju88s as I approached the convoy, noting that each ship looked to be unharmed and steaming hard for Margate. I scanned the sky surrounding my Martlet and did not see any other kites about, so I called the bandits in to my controller on the blower. Then I set my sights on the trailing bomber as each of the three were making their turn towards France. These Huns knew that if they could simply make their way back across The Strait of Dover to the French countryside that they would be out of danger. Diving from his port side I made my initial run carrying 220 mph of speed. I maintained my approach in a lead turn to ensure I would continue to traverse across his tail and not present myself as an easy mark for the rear gunner. Just as I closed range I leveled my altitude with the big bomber establishing a troublesome shot for the dorsal gunner and denying the ventral gunner any means to attack me.
[Linked Image]

As I pursued my initial assault I quickly silenced the dorsal gunner. My chatterboxes were lighting up this Junker as pieces of the aircraft began to find their way back towards my lass.
[Linked Image]

The Jerry pilot jinked this way and that, but I had him in my sights and he jolly well was not going to make it back across The Strait for his Christmas celebration if I had my say in the matter!
[Linked Image]

As I closed to within 100 yards, throttling back was my next move as I continued to tear this Ju88 apart with my four .50 cal machine guns.
[Linked Image]

Somehow at the present moment the rear cockpit glass and whole frame assembly shot upward from the damaged bomber and then proceeded to quickly slip below my Martlet while falling down into the Estuary below. I could clearly see the dorsal gunner slumped over his weapon now, and the man beside the pilot whom had already been dispatched as well.
[Linked Image]

The Junker had slowed to just 160 mph and I could tell that the Jerry pilot was doing all within his power to hold the big bomber back from stalling to the starboard side. That wing dipped downward again and again towards the chilly water below as our speed decreased even more.
[Linked Image]

With one final burst to the Ju88, which was now smoking heavily and gave the appearance of being severely damaged, its' starboard wing fell downward towards the drink one final time as the bomber dropped lower and lower.
[Linked Image]

I watched the rising sun glimmering off of the top side of the bomber as it slowly rolled onto a knife's edge and slipped violently into the frigid waters of The Strait. This body of water has recently become a vast grave yard for the many souls cast into it by this merciless war. I had just realized my first victory against these unknown adversaries on this,.....this Christmas morning. The elation which I had always dreamed of, upon securing my first victory, was nowhere to be found. A somber calm came over me as I scanned the sky in my vicinity to see if any of the other Ju88s or any new Jerrys were in my immediate area, but none were to be seen. I then called my victory in to my controller, as I contemplated what had just happened, and I was then ordered to continue my escort for the ships in the convoy.
[Linked Image]

I patrolled for another thirty minutes before reporting to my controller that I was low on rounds and petrol as well. I was given a vector back to Rochford and proceeded to fly over the convoy one final time. As a salute, I waggled my wings as I flew low over their ships. I watched as the men below on the decks of the three tankers were waving, a few dancing a little jig and clapping their hands in appreciation of this FAA pilot watching over them. The Man Upstairs had given those sailors a gift of safe passage on this Christmas Day. Just as I was clearing the last tanker I espied a tight Vic of RAF Spitfires approaching from my two o'clock high to carry on with the escort. I gave thanks during the slow trip back to Rochford for this great gift for our Merchant Marine Sailors and The Royal Navy as well as for my own safe and fruitful maneuvers on this day. It was good to see the aerodrome and to be safely home lest pancaking. As I came around the airstrip I lazily made a circuit, lowering my flaps, cranking 39 rounds of the manual undercarriage handle to lower and lock my landing gear. “Dam-n those 'Yanks!”, I said aloud to myself as I kicked one rudder pedal to side slip and lose a wee bit of speed to achieve the roughly 85 mph which I was looking for. It was quite a lovely approach coming in over the town of Rochford, rounding the water tower and soaring in rather low almost directly over the train trestle while lining up on my final.
[Linked Image]

While I still dream of flying a Hurricane, or perhaps a Spitfire, I am presently quite content with my Martlet as she has performed quite admirably on this day. She is a sassy lass, a bit stubborn in some ways but she will turn on a dime, dive like a falcon and has quite a mean streak while sporting her four .50 cal chatterboxes, which the Huns are coming to fear.
[Linked Image]

She is as stable as a three legged stool when you have her trimmed properly for flaps and undercarriage lowered. At 85 mph she just coasts in and with a little flare directly before pancaking, she will make a soft three point landing. Ease back full on the control column and lightly, and I do mean lightly, apply the binders or else, over you go. There is plenty of runway at Rochford Aerodrome so no need in getting to busy on the binders! Just a wee bit of dancing on the rudder pedals is all that is needed to keep her tracking straight down the strip! Once this lass has slowed to a turtle's pace, unlock the tail wheel and she is rather gentle to taxi with a lot of rudder and a little binder while working the throttle and always holding back on the control column.
[Linked Image]

Of course the new bloke is assigned the revetment at the far end of the field. Farthest from the Duty Erk's shack, even further from the Officer's mess, which is my second stop after visiting the Duty Erk's shack and completing a quick debriefing. Parking my lass is a snap as she turns as well on the ground as she does in the air. I put her deep in the revetment so nil of those nasty Huns can have an easy go at strafing her. One of the fitters shoves a pair of chocks under her wheels and then it is throttle to lowest setting, mixture to idle cut out, fuel cock off, magnetos off and all 1,240 horses of her Wright Cyclone Radial engine quiet down until not one of the 9 cylinders in her is left firing. The Martlet entered service with the FAA in September of 1940 when 81 aircraft, which had originally been ordered by France, were taken over by the British after France surrendered to Germany. This day, Christmas Day, was the first 'kill' for any American built fighter in British service. My lass and I, from No. 804 Naval Air Squadron, Fleet Air Arm of The Royal Navy, forced down that Junkers Ju88 on my ChristmasConvoy mission. This was only the beginning of the Martlet's stalwart service with Fighter Command in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm!

Thanks Vince, glad you enjoyed them. Trooper, I agree the ground textures leave a bit to be desired, but just to have the Tobruk map is worth it. I have to remind myself that this is a Combat Flight Sim and not ground war armor sim. When one is stuck in a fur-ball, one is not checking out the tiles to much. My real gripe is that the actual landing strip, that one can barely see from maybe 1000' and up, basically disappear as you are trying to land. I usually just try to get a feeling where the actual strip is in relation to the buildings and then do my best to try to land where I think the strip is. I REALLY wish they would make the actual strip a bit darker maybe so one could line up correctly on final. As of now I get the feeling that one can land anywhere within the circular Aerodrome area and be successful.

That's the main reason I want the ground texture improvements... hoping that the airfields at least can be better identified and landed upon... thumbsup

Here are a few more. I am flying the Kittyhawk Mk Ia out of Bardia on a cloudy morning this time. Trooper, note the landing strips here in Bardia are much more visible, even when on final up to wheels down pancake. Maybe Derna is just that much more of a light colored sand and that is why the landing strips blend in so much more? Not sure but this was much better as far as lining up with the actual landing strip. Honestly, not bashing TFS here, but I think these tiles in Bardia are a step above the tiles in Derna, at least in the sandy portions of the desert flats and dunes. The Derna tiles themselves look pretty good to me. For what it is worth though, I am still pretty dam-n impressed with what TFS have done in DWT. I just need some more stick time to appreciate DWT in a better way. Time is a precious commodity the older you get. yep

A short combat AAR for your entertainment. Hope you enjoy it. It certainly had my blood boiling a bit and caused me to endlessly check my six all the way back to Gazala Aerodrome. DWT is a Sweet theater, and I look forward to starting the Desert Rats Campaign very soon.

S!Blade<><

Shortly before 07:00 hours with the temperature at Gazala Aerodrome hovering around a chilly 37 degrees, we fired off our Kitthawk's Allison V1710 engines and prepared for the first patrol of June 13 1942.
[Linked Image]

Being the new kid on the block, I was left to eat the Gazala dust as my three flight mates screamed down the sand airstrip. I paused 20 seconds or so and the light morning breeze blew away most of the dust which was kicked up. Easing my stick back while holding the binders, I kicked over the rpms to 2000 before releasing my brakes and starting my rollout.
[Linked Image]

First I formed up with one of my section mates.
[Linked Image]

Then we joined the other two in our section and we all began our cruise, running our Allison's at 2600 rpm and 42 inches of manifold pressure, en-route to our assigned patrol sector over el Adem.
[Linked Image]

We were vectored to intercept a group of JU 88 bombers which were suspected of being en-route to attack Tobruk.
[Linked Image]

First we came across two Schwarms of Bf 109s to our 11 o'clock low, each in finger four formation.
[Linked Image]

Our section split into two pairs and I followed my mate in on a diving attack. We had to mind our airspeed as we were only rated to dive at a maximum speed of 470 mph.
[Linked Image]

I split from my mate as I dove in and opened fire with my chatterboxes and scored the only hits that I would make during this entire fight.
[Linked Image]

I gave chase and attempted to line Jerry up for another burst.
[Linked Image]

I tried to land more hits but this Hun just seemed to stroll right away from my Kittyhawk.
[Linked Image]

Quickly checking my six I found another Jerry #%&*$# closing on my Kittyhawk rather quickly!
[Linked Image]

I saw his first burst fly past my canopy, and I knew I could no longer pursue the Hun in front of me.
[Linked Image]

I broke to my starboard side and Jerry was right on me!
[Linked Image]

As I barrel rolled to my starboard side I knew Jerry was going to overshoot me.
[Linked Image]

The 109 shot by and I noticed a yellow 11 on the side as I tried to line up for a shot. It was no use, he was simply to fast.
[Linked Image]

Looking to my port side I briefly saw one of my mates bailing out of his severely damaged Kittyhawk.
[Linked Image]

The next second I see rounds fly past my canopy once more and hastily looking over my port shoulder I see another Hun rapidly approaching!
[Linked Image]

He dipped low under my port wing, and I see a yellow number 8 on the side of this 109.
[Linked Image]

Before I can make a move to attack, this Hun is 1000ft above me and climbing like a bat out of hell. I lower my nose and dive in excess of the 470 mph limit as I make my way out of this dogfight. I am outclassed by these Huns in their 109s and I can no longer spot any of my mates in the vicinity. I will run to make it back to Gazala Aerodrome so as to fight another day. Later I find that three of us had returned safely with one of my mates scoring a kill. The desert rats watched as our downed pilot parachuted to safety, and they picked him up in short order. He was returned to us, a might shaken up but unharmed, late that very same afternoon. What a harrowing experience this was for me on my first desert patrol. Having our Kittyhawks outclassed, not to mention outnumbered, was a sobering experience and reminded me that this is a dangerous business flying and fighting high above the desert. It is nothing to be taken lightly and a day such as today only proves we have a tuff scrap on our hands. Onward and upwards, we shall carry the fight to these dirty Huns none the less and we shall meat out a full measure for their proud intrusion during this African Campaign!

Yes and great pics too.

I happened to get a couple of snaps of a real Kittyhawk at the RAF Museum, Hendon, on a visit last month. Apparently this is a later P-40N Kittyhawk IV rebuilt from an RAAF New Guinea wreck, painted in the Desert Air Force scheme for a Kittyhawk III,

Thanks Trooper and 33lima. Thanks for posting those awesome pics of a real Kittyhawk. She is fun to fly but slow as a bus unless you are diving. It is going to take some stick time to learn to fight in her, although I guess she was more suited to ground attack. Am I right in that the Tomahawk MkII was the better fighter? Here are a few leftovers I like.

LOL Trooper, you always crack me up with your little comments. S! thumbsup
TFS has redone the early morning lighting and I think the dusk lighting sometime a while back and they really hit the proverbial nail on the head I think. It looks stunning in sim to me.
An early morning lone wolf patrol, after downing one Bf109, my Allison shuts down on me a couple of miles from pancaking. This was a dead stick landing for me. winkngrin

I off'r up a quaint AAR of fusty!

Shakesp're Hast Been Calledeth Up!

S!Blade<><

Hencf'rth and three weeks aft'r me initial des'rt combat in the Kittyhawk, h're i sitteth in mineth owneth new Tomahawk. Those three weeks hadst been hard didst presseth to flyeth s'rties in the Kittyhawk and then traineth in the Tomahawk at which hour things w're sloweth. The Tomahawk is m're pow'rful and flies liketh a prop'r hunteth'r killeth'r. In the right hands the mistress can beest a lethal matcheth. The mistress is a stunning war machine, i meanest, the mistress simply lookeths nasty, liketh the mistress wanteth to picketh a square. With 4x wing mount'd .30 cal machine guns, 2x syncroniz'd .50 cal fuselage mount'd machine guns, heavy armament round the engine and the cockpit, this lass is eft f'r a scrap with the des'rt huns and the macaroni. I didst riseth up at sparrow chirp f'r this m'rnings section patrol and hadst mineth owneth kite's allison warmeth'd up at which hour i didst seeth mineth owneth section leadeth'r and numb'r three walking to their Tomahawks. We couldst only field three Tomahawks as of the present day and mineth owneth lass wast giving problems with the oil pressure switcheth. F'r this reasoneth i hadst mineth owneth section leadeth'r's p'rmission to taketh mineth owneth lass up early to giveth h'r a checkout and then f'rm up with the guv'n'r and his numb'r three once those gents tooketh off.
[Linked Image]

“Oi, a damneth payback f'r three weeks hence at which hour the two of thee dust'd me off on me first hopeth!” , i hath said aloud. Then as sooneth as those gents hath reached their Tomahawks i ranneth up me rpms to 2000, releas'd the bindeth'rs ant alloweth those folk to consumeth me dusteth this m'rning cobb'r! Th're is nothing liketh a dram powd'ry des'rt dusty sand settling all ov'r oneself first thing in the m'rning to chap thy chuff'd little arse now is th're mateth! I chuckl'dth to myself as I did dash off down the stripeth in mine own Tomahawk.
[Linked Image]

I can't putteth me fing'r on it, but the Tomahawk just hath felt m're rugged, sturdi'r, m'reov'r lethal than the Kittyhawk. Coequal at which hour the und'rcarriage hath raised up, the lady just clunk'd up tight liketh a square'r throwing out his chest! Me lass and I, we' did preparest for a scrap this m'rning mateth!
[Linked Image]

As i climb out of Gazla A'rodrome, a quick behold ov'r mine own starboard shouldst'r discloses the still smold'ring fires from lasteth nights raids on tobruk. Those dameth Axis #%&*$# pound tobruk day and night, and the boys on the sand art just holding on by tooth and naileth. Buttoning up mine own cockpit, i did get on with mine own owneth business of circling the airstrip and f'rming up with the section leadeth'r and his numb'r three.
[Linked Image]

Just a few moments lat'r and we art f'rming up nice and tight liketh 3 bugs in a rug. T is a mite both'rsome keeping an eye on mine own gauges, keeping an eye on mine own section leadeth'r and keeping a third eye out f'r j'rry! Once mine own lass is trimm'd out to flyeth nice and leveleth t is a piece easi'r, but the dram windeth gusts shall keepeth a chap on his toes regardless.
[Linked Image]

T is at each patroleth a mite of a tournament between numb'r three and myself to seeth who is't can flyeth in the tightest f'rmation with the gov'rn'r. This m'rning i has't the steady handeth and n'rves of steel as i clipeth the goven'r's tail while numb'r three buggars his spoteth up. A few to many to drinketh lasteth evening f'r numb'r three in the offic'r's club i bethink. Alloweth not that gent a blinking idiot to thee cousin, that gent is quite cocksure and eft to square with fusty j'rry mind thee. Three is a cracketh shot that gent is! Three hates fusty j'rry! I'm fain the blokes partial to our side!
[Linked Image]

Nay anon'r than we crosseth the front line than the goven'r is calling out, "huns ten o'clock base mates!" As each of us turns in to engage, one of the macaroni pilots passes directly ov'r mine own lass, screaming right by and hath passed liketh that gent doesn't has't a careth in the w'rld. I turneth into that gent and findeth mine own way onto his base six. I bethink not that he can spoteth me down h're as that gent flys straight ahead as i climb with haste onto his tail. The goven'r and numb'r three has't already did chase two of the macaroni pilots down base, and as i chaseth this macaroni down base'r i beginneth to spoteth m're and m're of the mafia in the vicinity. We art heavilt outnumb'r'd and this is a square to the death mateth!
[Linked Image]

As i closeth on this macaroni pilot, i alloweth mine own chatt'rboxes loose to early. Mine own trac'rs flyeth wildly by his square'r and t seemeth yond gent knoweth yond i am backeth behind him at presenteth. With a slight climbing turneth to his starboard, i feeleth sure that he gaveth a quick behold ov'r his shouldst'r and that gent knoweth f'r c'rtain yond i am h're. He pulls his controleth column m're f'rcefully to his starboard anon as i alloweth loose anoth'r burst from mine own chatt'rboxes! If 't be true that gent dives off to his starboard side i shall clobb'r that him. If 't be true he continues to climb i shall has't only a precious few moments to alloweth loose anoth'r squirt and tryeth to maketh that gent diveth.
[Linked Image]

I alloweth mine own chatt'rboxes loose with yet anoth'r volly of rounds and i hitteth the square'r on his starboard ail'ron. That gent hast given hence his speedeth and anon i am closing in to clobb'r his plane. He turns belly up to diveth hence and runneth, but i am right on himeth. Suddenly that gent completes a full rolleth, and as i followeth, with a quick behold ov'r mine own shouldst'r, i spoteth anoth'r macaroni on mine own tail! These macaroni pilots art trying to setteth me up to killeth me by pulling thy wool ov'r mine own eyes!
[Linked Image]

I pursue a harsh'r starboard turneth and the buggar on mine own tail ov'rshoots mine own lass! That gent cameth withinh a breath of having me f'r breakfast! biggrin As he hastily hath passed by mine own lass, i dove to the deck and anon wast ov'r the medit'rainian hurtling 'long at 400 mph.
[Linked Image]

As i cometh 'round to mine own p'rt wing i spoteth yet anoth'r of the mafia down base. I beginneth to climb and pursue that gent as i am momentarily mesm'riz'd by the beauty of the deep blue wat'r coloreth of the medit'rainin. T oft amazes me at the things yond capture mine own mind coequal at which hour i am hurtling 'long at 400 mph while involv'd in combat. I shaketh mine own headeth apace to cleareth mine own senses f'r this mind wand'ring is ill advise as one shall not seeth the completeth picture, and coequal in this split second i couldst beest clobb'r'd by the one i nev'r did seeeth. Liketh the macaroni pilot yond hadst his eye on me from high above at this v'ry moment. Mine own Tomahawk stoodeth out 'gainst the beauty of the blue wat'r as that gent did roll ov'r and beganeth his diving attacketh in pursuit of me!
[Linked Image]

I climbeth to 500 feet above the macaroni whom i am chasing. I believeth not that gent kneweth i wast th're and coming f'r him! I did start a sloweth diveth as we clear'd the delightful me'd coast and cameth ov'r the drab sands of the des'rt. Only a few green fields w're to beest hath found in some of the base areas 'long the coast. Oth'rwise the landeth is a vast drab and curs'd des'rt spanning as far as the eye can seeth. Just as i fir'd mine own first burst this #%&*$# did roll belly up and dove hence!
[Linked Image]

Then from out of nay wh're. Trac'rs did fly past all 'round me!
[Linked Image]
Timeth stoodeth still as i gazed upon each crisp of smoketh as t streak past mine own cockpit! I did see the hot yellow ends of the trac'r rounds as those littleth gents did speed hence forth from me!
[Linked Image]

I hath continued to unleash mine own chatt'rboxes wildly at the macaroni pilot diving hence!
[Linked Image]

Mine own en'rgy dwindl'd as i kneweth mine own pursu'r wast hastily ov'rtaking me, yet not one round hadst assault'd mine own lass!
[Linked Image]

I srtuggled'd to leveleth mine own wings as i did prepare f'r the w'rst, but the rounds ceased coming as i didst approach the top of mine own climb. F'r an instant i bethought i hadst did survive this macaroni's assault. Then a loud cracketh, a ripping soundeth, a catastrophic series of events hadst instantly been setteth in motion!
[Linked Image]

In a split second, off mine own p'rt wing, i hadst seen a macaroni square'r exchange greetings between his wingtip and mine owneth wingtip. An unfriendly exchange, liketh to f'rm'r warri'rs pitting their stance 'gainst one anoth'r. One wilt giveth way, but in a m're instant t wast apparent yond neith'r wouldst claimeth vict'ry on this day!
[Linked Image]

Owing to being only 1000 feet above the des'rt flo'r i did throw the canopy glass backeth, popp'd mine own harness and did roll out of mine own sev'rely wound'd Tomahawk. F'r just a moment i wast able to seeth yond one half of mine own p'rt wing hadst been sev'r'd in the collision. As i didst gazeth on, mineth owneth lass screameth h'r dying song as the mistress didst raceth towrds h'r death in the des'rt below!
[Linked Image]

I gaveth a grant of thanks and mercy yond i hadst the f'rethought to glueth mine own offic'rs cap to mine own headeth using contact cement the evening bef're. As i gaveth mine own parachute dudgeon a pulleth i wast snatchethed skyward and ev'rything slow'd to a crawleth.
[Linked Image]

As the ground did rush up to greeteth me, i witness'd mine own lass explodeth into the des'rt with a thund'rous moaneth!
[Linked Image]

I wast afeard f'r a moment tha i might landeth in the fi'ry fireth of mine own lass's crasheth, but this wast not to beest. I didst landeth harshly and rolledeth through the grit of the sandy des'rt flo'r as mine own chute but softly did lie ov'r.
[Linked Image]

I didst hurry to mine own feet and releas'd the harness which in turneth releas'd mine own chute fromest me. I wond'r'd how mine own mates hadst far'd as i did survey the des'rt 'round me. Placing the travelling lamp gen'rally to mine own front, i didst starteth walking and wond'r'd how far i wouldst hast't to wendeth bef're being picketh'd up.

So endeth the second s'rtie of Pilot Offic'r Shakesp're!

As thou descendeth through the heavens did thou yelleth at the hapless Macaroni that causeth thine dire predicament as he also took to the silk:
"“Thy trunk of humours, thy bolting-hutch of beastliness, swollen parcel of dropsies, huge bombard of sack, thou stuffed cloak-bag of guts, thy roasted Manningtree ox with pudding in thine belly, reverend vice, thou grey Iniquity, that fathers ruffian, with vanity in years?”

Or somesuch.....:)

And Blade_Meister's spirit, ranging for revenge
With his wingman by his side come hot from the Sergeant's Mess
Shall in these confines with a Air Vice Marshall's voice cry 'Havoc!'
And let slip the Dogs of War
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Well at least my little Shakespearean AAR didn't completely fall on blind eyes. Not really sure why I wanted to do that, but at least I got it off my chest. Now maybe I can get back to more serious projects which have been shelved for quite some time.
I thank you each for the Tudor Period epilogues. yep

Fun reading- thanks for sharing!
Spend most of my limited time on iRacing, but might need to break out the joy stick again. I have CLOD Blitz on my hard drive but haven't tried the Tobruk theater of operations yet.

A dynamic career over The Channel and Southeast England in a G50? I actually have 1 kill against a Spitty in 2 missions. It is pretty tough in this relatively slow and quite overwhelmingly under armed fighter. Ah but the fresh air! It is so worth it!;)

S!Blade<><

Combat Patrol somewhere over Southern England. Am I lost?
[Linked Image]

It is not wise to chase a Spitty over a British Aerodrome, although the AA does look incredible coming up at you and the sound sample mastering of the AA guns is positively the BEST.
[Linked Image]

Getting a few hits in on a willy RAF pilot who is looking in his mirror and trying to sort out what this strange little fighter whom is pinging away at his Spitty with two BB guns is.
[Linked Image]

The next thing I know a Bf109 crashes the party in a spectacularly reckless manner! "Hey, I had this situation under control Jerry!!!, I shouted at the egotistical hun."
[Linked Image]

As I pulled up to gain a bit of altitude to see where this fracas was headed, I suddenly see tracers scream past the starboard side of my cockpit and I know that Tommy's wing man is laboring to repay me the favor which I extended to his leader!
[Linked Image]

I roll hard to my port side and dive away over some unknown English metropolis!
[Linked Image]

Plunging away to the wave tops I make my hasty retreat while it is still possible for me to do so.

Your captions crack me up Trooper. Here are a few more of my recent adventures. I hate to say it but I am 'stuck in' with the Kittyhawk/Tomahawk. I lobbied and waited for the Martlet for so long and I did fly it at first for a few missions when DWT was released, but then I got in the Kittyhawk/Tomahawk and I haven't gotten out of it hardly at all yet. I've not flown either the new Spitfire or Hurricane in DWT yet, or maybe one flight in the Hurricane. sigh

Lovely pics there... I can't wait for the new terrain to make it to the game. I'll probably start flying it again when it does.

Thanks Gents. CLOD/DWT is a good looking sim, and as Trooper said, I can't wait for the next update with TruSky and 4k terrain and plane modeling/skins.
Here is the setup to another gun run pic in the Tomahawk.
