http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1883092/I'm really pleased to come across this German version of Band of Brothers. I'm not real familiar with German movies like this one, and would like to find more of this caliber. I watched a scene or two of My Honor Was Loyalty, but too home made for my taste. I speak German so the native language is preferred.

It's on Netflix streaming at the moment. For anyone who sees the individual men, and not the war, it is an excellent portrayal of the german soldier.

it is an excellent portrayal of the german soldier. I'm not trying to be difficult but how do you know? Is the assumption that because this isn't a Hollywood production that the portrayal here is accurate?

Because they are portrayed as human. Not the ruthless, emotionless, killing machine most hollywood movies make them out to be.
I've always had the belief that you don't glorify the cause, but you can glorify the man, if he's so worthy. WW2 vets, regardless of side, were amazing individuals.
There's obviously those that won't agree with that. And put full blame on the antagonists. But I wonder, how many of us would stand up for our beliefs in the face of wrong. Especially in a society that won't walk 10 feet out of their way to help an elderly lady who can't walk across a busy intersection.

Excluding those who committed war crimes of course. Beyond that though I agree 100% with you. There was a time though in the distant past when Hollywood had a pretty even-handed portrayal of the Axis side. Movies like "The Blue Max", "Tora, Tora, Tora" and "The Longest Day" come to mind.

In a way it amazes me that Hollyweird is still making big bucks off WW2 stories. Considering the lack of knowledge of it in the general population anymore you would have thought they would have moved on by now. Wheels

I think it's because later wars are so inextricably entangled with modern so-called politics that films about them are regarded as high-risk financially.
There are worthy exceptions like The Hurt Locker and Jarhead, but they prove the rule imo.
Look at the huge US involvement in the VN war and the paucity of films that came out of it.... Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter. Not many more biggies, and that after almost 10 years of war and 50,000 US dead alone.

Well the vets from Vietnam are still around as well. You wouldn't see too many movies that made German soldiers look like humans in 1960 either, that was taboo. When the vets are elderly or gone, feelings go with them, so it's easier to portray reality.

I'm still shocked at how well "Dunkirk" did in the US box office when you consider its about an event that most people are not familiar with and it involves zero US soldiers.
