Hi all.

I usually fly in 737's but I recently went to Europe and flew aboard a 767.

Both going and coming from Europe, when we were about 1000-2000 feet in the air (I am guessing) after take-off, the pilot reduced throttle and reduced the rate and angle of climb. Then after a few seconds, increased the throttle and increased the ascent again.

My prior experience on many flights on the 737's is just a continuous ascent with the same throttle until we reached cruising altitude.

Does anyone have any likely explanation as to why the pilot did what he did each time? (Note that it might have been the same pilot both times - the air service crew on the plane was the same from what I could tell).
Just dealing the air traffic? Something in the performance of the 767? Something else?
Also note that the flight to Europe left the U.S. from the same airport I have flown from many times.

Thanks!
Juggernaut

Maybe an altitude restriction.

Yes, most likely altitude and possibly noise restrictions. At some airports in the U.S. airliners are required to make heading changes immediately after takeoff to limit noise in certain areas.

if it was briefly after takeoff it was probably a noise abatement procedure necessary for flying over that area near the airport, maybe combined with an altitude restriction built into the SID (standard international departure, a series of waypoints we follow after takeoff) or short delay while ATC was dealing with other traffic in the area.

if the sound levels exceed the limit published on the approach or in the regulations, a very big fine is handed out so noise abatement is a fairly big deal

yea the noise also reduces property values

I love this. Folks buy a house next to an airport, then complain about the noise.

As they say in Scotland - fook'em

you assume the airport was built before the houses next to it were - well when IAH added another runway for the big planes that runway and therefore the planes were now that much closer to the houses that already existed there in peace

IAH was built in the late 60s some 23 miles from city centre. Would say that is well out in the boonies for that time.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I don't know if there were any houses existing there at the time but i do know that when they expanded the landing field the entire city of Humble was sitting next to it with all the residential neighborhoods

as they say in Scotland ...."fook'em, let them buy a plane ticket to fly into JFK instead"

but it's not just with airports ..... how many times have you seen a nice, quiet street or neighborhood and the city decides to build a damn road right next to that street with cars now speeding by ....they could care less about other people's property values as long as they keep paying their taxes because if those property values fall ....not to worry ...the city will gradually increase them anyway
