How about a can of pepper spray for now, until she can find a weapon she is comfortable with. Pepper spray is very bad in a closed room. Hell it is bad out in the open. The person spraying still gets a really big hit of it. For an elderly person firing off in a closed room might be a death sentence if they have any form of asthma.

Actually, I recommend her family just man up and take mom in....
Oh wait, that's not cool anymore.

Yeah... but you tried Max. Taking care of my mom kinda changed/screwed up my life A LOT. I still wouldn't trade that I was able to be there for her for anything I can think of. A gun for my mom??? She WAS late eighties when I started caring for her. I am truly amazed that people cannot come up with a better option for an 80 year old women, who seems to be afraid of her .32 pistol, than another gun. Like maybe, "Yo, cops. Quit hangin out with each other in parking lots, restaurants, running stings on kids selling pot, etc and how about taking care of our senior citizens?" Seriously.

Just FYI so no more erroneous assumptions are made, Mrs G isn't an invalid by any means. She jogs every day, she's sharp as a tack and a very intelligent, independent, woman (retired school teacher).
But she's not a firearms expert and she's not going to go to Thunder Ranch anytime soon to learn how to handle a pistol.

Maybe a short-barreled semiauto .410? 00 or 000 buckshot would hit hard but still have pretty mild recoil.

Couple of quick questions.
Does she have any experience with firearms? It sounded like she had a 32 pistol before but then it sounds like she is completely inexperienced. If she has some experience it would be nice.
Can she handle firing a regular semi auto pistol? Revolvers have a tough pull and can be rough for some folks.
If she has some difficulty squeezing the trigger or racking a slide then my suggestion is something like what my wife has. She has a Beretta Tomcat 32ACP tip up barrel pistol. It is nice in that you don't have to lock the slide back to the rear to load it. Just put in the magazine, tip up the barrel and place a bullet. Once done the weapon can be fired. It is easier to fire if you manually cock it but you don't have to. Pull is a little hard if you don't. My wife has MS and found racking the slide on a pistol is difficult. Her hand strength is lower so she had to stop carrying the 38. She was in more danger of shooting herself with it than hitting a target.
But the Tomcat works well for her.
If your mother has no experience with firearms, and no desire to learn and practice then no gun is a good idea IMHO. I'm not a big fan of shotguns for the elderly. I know that scene from 'Ever Which Way but Loose' is funny but shotguns tend to be heavy, large and cumbersome and a little old lady trying to bring one around on someone might be more of a disaster than it is worth. Pistols take practice, even experienced shooters need to take a new gun to the range to learn the pull and kick and learn to compensate. But you knew that already. If she can't do either I'd get a taser or pepper spray.
