It took a LOT of imagination in those days to fill in the blanks, freeing a developer's resources to often providing multiple theaters and aircraft in a single game, plus engrossing scenarios with well written documentation. It was a reasonable tradeoff IMO, and unless a more detailed modeling was really well done, it was best to let your imagination complete the picture.

I chose number 2. I rarely fly sims now but it's not through choice. If I could I would fly regularly but grandkids and real life keep getting in the way LOL. There's just not enough time in the day. I keep buying modules and flight sims but just dont have the time to learn them in any meaningful manner so I just dabble and pootle around in my airplane /helicopter.
Maybe when I retire LOL

I fly IL2/46/HSFX6, also occasionally fly the same with CUP. Single player campaigns, western front mostly, with a Mustang......and sometimes the Pacific, a carrier with a Corsair. About once a day, sometimes I miss a day or two, if something comes up I have to do. Never more than one mission. My HOTAS is set up, and I saved the entire game, and settings, skins etc....on my second HDD, just incase.
Probably always will fly once in a while. I haven't found anything as interesting, I love the game, I love flying. I'd give it up, if someone would give me a 'real' P-51D.......and bullets.....
Aren't the chances of a true WW2 Flight Sim almost zero, due to all the litigation required to use actual planes and their "Copyrights"?
Considering that a small time developer, thirdwire, created a flight sim that had jets from the 50's to 80's without a problem though I notice one company, which gave another flight sim developer hell, isn't used at all until the end.
I have three flight simulators installed. I want to play them more. However my right hand goes numb in about 20 minutes, using the HOTAS. I had a stroke. Getting better and better, but for some reason that position makes me numb. I can safely handle firearms again, but I start to get the numb feeling and need to stop, when firing a rifle. in about half an hour.
What kind of car is that? What does it matter? When I drive it, I'm Steve McQueen

I will chime in with a vote for #2 which is the closest for me. I have CLOD, BOS/M, and DCS installed but haven't played any of them for months.
But I am planning to get back into CLOD when 4.5 comes out--at least for a bit. I also want to get back into BOS/M when BOK and it's "improved" campaigns are introduced.
Fly BoX online at least once a week, with 70+ players involved at the same time, lag free, great visuals, great sounds, most bugs finally squashed. I didn't believe in this sim but since jason handles this now, I'm pretty confident I'll fly it for a few years. Offline I still prefer 1946, have not installed BAT yet due do disk space but plan to do so, meanwhile I fly HSFX 7.03 and CUP, currently as a Normandie Niemen pilot flying Yak3 near Konigsberg. Not as regularly I fly DCS, mirage module online and SU25T offline, many other modules are waiting for core game to stabilize so we can fly bugfree dynamic campaigns. Had a ROF career end with the armistice recently, many aircraft there are waiting for some flying time too. Still have this BMS campaign to finish, now that NK, chinese and russian air forces have been squashed it went a bit boring to support those ground forces on their way to pyong yang. Same in strike fighters 2 it will take forever to repel the russian hordes from west germany. Add to this submarines in SH serie, infantry and helo flying in Arma3, a bit of racing here and there in AC, PCars and F1, addictive f2p world of warships..... So many great flight sims/ games of all sorts, so short a life ! But keep'em coming, I'll buy them as long as they're good
